Booster313 138 Report post Posted March 1, 2011 Osgood makes 1.4 right now, Jimmy makes around 750k so that's a total cap hit this year of 2.15m. If we resign Ozzie or another backup next year for league min then our total goaltending expense is only going up by 550-650k for the next two years. I'd say that's a good deal. If Jimmy stays the same it's fair for a mid-talent goalie who helps us win games, if Jimmy improves then it's a steal and if we decide to go a different direction well then he's tradable because of the length/dollar amt. Great flexible options with this deal.
LeftWinger 4,961 Report post Posted March 1, 2011 (edited) When we trade Howard for Nabokov in the off season, and Osgood resign's for $500,000 then our goalie cap hit will only be slightly over $1M! (I joke, I joke) Edited March 1, 2011 by LeftWinger

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted March 1, 2011 I would have preferred to see how Jimmy stacks up in the playoffs again before giving him two more years, but hopefully this is some motivation for him to ramp up his game. I'm not crazy about this deal, but I'd love Jimmy to prove me wrong.

Casey 145 Report post Posted March 1, 2011 I like it. Even if he ends up as a backup, which would be worst-case, he's still cheap at that price.
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted March 1, 2011 Howard's deal should have been closer to $1.875-$2m. If he earns it, though, I suppose it doesn't matter.

13dangledangle 965 Report post Posted March 1, 2011 Im really happy about this, 2.25 is a great deal I think this kid has a bright future. Those saying he wouldnt get much on the market I think are quit wrong. I believe what he would get out there would be a team out there by the name of Tampa that would given him more...Not to mention on that thread a while ago about the 2014 Olympic rosters Howard is penciled in as starter (or at least the first name shown). Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted March 1, 2011 I think he could have gotten more than that from some teams on the market this summer.
WorkingOvertime 536 Report post Posted March 1, 2011 I think he could have gotten more than that from some teams on the market this summer. I agree. This is a fair deal. Like other posters, I would have liked to see the number a bit lower but he would have easily gotten this much on the open market.
Guest Hatethedrake! Report post Posted March 1, 2011 Ever since the Hasek-Cujo fiasco, Kenny doesn"t spend too much in net. Which is fine with me. I'd hate to tie up 10 mil in net like the Canucks do with the choke artist Luongo. Howard for 2 years is fine with me. As for the back-up, does Kenny re-sign Osgood for 1 year at say 850,000? Or does he spend the same amount on an UFA like Conklin?

Yeah he is still one of the best goalies in the league. But I can"t ignore his playoff meltdowns especially against the Hawks. Plus he has like 10 or 11 years left on his contract. ogreslayer 1,069 Report post Posted March 1, 2011 So would you rather have Jimmy for 2 years at $2.25m per or Niemi for 4 at a $3.8 average? I call this a solid, solid signing by Kenny.

greenrebellion 415 Report post Posted March 1, 2011 Niemi almost makes twice as much as Howard does. Kenny proves once again why he is the best GM in the game. One could argue that Niemi is a better goalie and has proven himself in the playoffs making him worth the extra $1.6MM per year.
