HankthaTank 1,100 Report post Posted March 3, 2011 This probably helps people if they don't know what you are talking about.... I would say 10+ would suffice. 2 time offender with a blatant elbow to the head? Just no place for that garbage. Retaliation was probably coming though with the boarding by Clusterf*** from earlier but this is out of bounds imo.

haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted March 3, 2011 (edited) The Clutterbuck hit was bad, but the player turned and it looks like he let up a bit. For as many hits as he throws, Clutterbuck is a pretty clean hitter. But it looks like Gillies threw another elbow to the jaw. I didn't even realize he was back from the first suspension. The guy's not even a hockey player, so I don't care how high the suspension goes, but I'd say start with 10 games. Of course, 20 would be great too. WorkingOvertime 536 Report post Posted March 3, 2011 Personally, I don't think there should be a big suspension here. Cooke is a repeat offender and his last suspended hit was much worse IMO and I believe he only got four games. I don't like seeing suspensions levied on players because of their skill level. Plenty of people on here complain when skill players aren't given as big of suspensions, but giving bad players longer suspensions only perpetuates the cycle. Anything more than four games is too much and less is better. It was a dirty hit, but he has already sat out a game and worse hits have gone unpunished. 3 e_prime, esteef and Hockeymom1960 reacted to this

Funny how that Minny video fails to show Clutterbuck's hit from seconds before... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HObjS14bPuU As a marginal "player", Gilles needs to learn to keep his mitts and arms down. He'll get 4 games. Edited March 3, 2011 by e_prime

I mean any swinging dick on the effing ice can toss an elbow at a guy's face. This was chicken s***. RusDRW 155 Report post Posted March 3, 2011 I don't feel for players like Clutteruck. Looks like they think they are allowed to do everything they want earning their ice time with questionable hits to star players. Each time he is on the ice against us I can only hope either Datsyk or Zetterberg will not be injured. He got what he was asking for. Hopefully, that would be enough for his fearless spirit... How much should Gillies get? Two games. This is what Cooke always gets. So why should we treat this differently? 3 asoras, esteef and Hockeymom1960 reacted to this

But when it's your first game back for concussing a guy by throwing a dirty elbow to the head (then yapping at him as he's down on the ice) and you do the same thing in your first game back, it sends a pretty clear signal you've not learned anything from your suspension. HankthaTank 1,100 Report post Posted March 3, 2011 Just for a reference point @TSNBobMcKenzieBut since it was Gillies and was minutes off returning from 9-game susp, he's going to get more than what any other generic NHLer would get @TSNBobMcKenzieJust a guess: 4 or 5 games and, yes, I know many will call for double digits or life. Clutterbuck's health will be the x factor too.

That was my thinking. Not only was it his first game back, it was his second shift I think. I didn't think to much about it, but if Clutterbuck is not hurt, then the suspension would likely be minimized, which would be wrong in this case if you ask me. There are several other dirty players that have gotten suspended for less games, but I disagree in that several others were worse hits. The NHL has to start taking head shots way more seriously and with the high profile this issue has become, I have to believe he'll get something substantial. To me, going back to his 9 game suspension, he threw and incredibly dirty elbow, concussed the player, who was essentailly knocked out and he then proceeds to pummel him with punches, followed up by him standing at the door taunting him as he lays on the ice. What the hell is that? This is a guy who is 32 years old and has 2 "career" points in the NHL. What is the point of having this guy in the league. You can compare him to Cooke as well, who is just as much of a piece of crap, but at least Cooke can play a little bit. WARNING....I'm not making that comment suggesting Gillies should get more games than a guy like Cooke simply because Cooke is a better player, I'm simply wondering why Gillies is in the game to begin with. How much should Gillies get? Two games. This is what Cooke always gets. So why should we treat this differently? Cooke always gets 2 games for what? Since his hit on Savard, which was clean at the time, but ended up causing a new rule to be created, he hasn't delievered any head shots, so there is really nothing to compare. Gillies hits were against the rules even before the new rule, since they were both elbows to the head. If the NHL truly wants to take head shots out of the game and show they mean business, there will be a serious suspension, but I worry there won't be. Oh, on whether the Clutterbuck hit was clean or not....who cares? That's a separate incicident, which should be treated separately.

Disclaimer: Playing devil's advocate here. Gilles cares whether Clutterbuck's hit was clean/questionable or not... That's why he's there... to "protect" young players (DiBenedetto - 22y/o - second game) ...and the incidents are mere moments apart. They are tied together. Clutterbuck delivers a hit Gilles sees as questionable. He delivers his retaliation/protection. He's just doing it wrong. I understand the reason, but I would certainly hope it has no bearing at all in length of suspension. I'd prefer the response to be a nice clean body check that hurts, but I'd also accept him taking an instigator penatly and lay a beat down on the guy. To do what he did though, is just stupid and exactly what the league is trying to get rid of. 1 Rick D reacted to this
WorkingOvertime 536 Report post Posted March 3, 2011 I think Keith Jones on Versus called it right... Gilles is a real "meathead" who just doesn't "get it". Milbury's comments were off base last night. He went into the stands to beat a fan with a shoe during his NHL career. Granted the NHL has progressed from incidents like this, but I don't see how he can call for Gillies to be out of the league when today Milbury would be banned from the league and likely wouldn't be employed by Versus. The game has progressed but I hate seeing ex-players calling for these long suspensions when they did much worse during their NHL careers. I agree, pre meditated slow motion elbow to the head. Dirty? Yes, but not premeditated.

What a player did in their career as a player shouldn't result in any limitations on their ability to assess whehter a player's actionas are "okay" or not, or suspension worthy. Also, when you are talking about hits to the head, the game has changed immensely, even over the past 10 years. Knowing what everyone now knows about head injuries, these types of hits are the most high profile now and ones that no one wants to be in the game. So, Mr. Hockey threw elbows all the time back in the day.....I'd have no problem with him not wanting to see players do it today. It's almost like saying murderer can't suggest another murderer has done something wrong.
