Abdelkader looks very replaceable. He's not in Helm's league in terms of value, that's for sure.

Abby was the biggest disappointment for me this year. I thought with his 1st and 2nd line experience with lots of solid ice time from last year's injuries, he'd improve drastically. He looks like he's decided that he doesn't want to be a hockey player anymore. He used to be a player with heart. Not this year.

Must have used the same tactic on guys like McCarty and Kocur back in the day with the SAME management. Same tired excuses from a guy with an Abby avatar. Go figure.

jimmy D was more in charge of that, jimmy D is no longer that active in the organization, he semi retired.he stopped being gm after the 97 cup. when exactly did they stop being tough? gradually declining since then. so would u consider management would you consider a different coach, and gm different management? ok i guess the lightning have the same management as last year.

To use it as an excuse for why Abby has declined as a tougher type player is pretty lame though. I think most of us can relate it to him trying to develop other parts of his game. He is by far the most active in the hit department, but I can't say I can remember the last time Abby has had a bone crushing type hit or a solid game where he has really looked like someone who couldn't be replaced currently.

i wanna see him fight again.. a real fight.

I don't buy any of that bulls*** about him taking boxing lessons.

Each time he fights, he looks a little awkward and probably wouldn't last too long if he did it regularly.

At this point, as others have said, he's very expendable.

he stays on his feet for 5 sec then bear hugs them to the ground, he needs to go up to downeys farm this summer

Decent game last night. I like Abby, and think he can kinda be a better version of Martin Lapointe, but I still will always secretly detest him because we could have drafted Latrendesse instead of him. Still good for him. He was invaluable in the playoffs last year.

He's useless.

Guy never stands up for his teammates, especially in a game like tonight.

I understand where you're coming from, but why does it have to be Abby? There were 17 other players on the Detroit bench that could have stood up for their teammates, and E, Miller, Bert, Eaves are just as good (or better) at fighting.

I'd like to see someone stand up for the team, but I don't know why Abby has magically inherited the role. He is just the scapegoat for the team not having Boll, Prust, Rosehill, etc that I (and other posters) advocated signing/trading for in the off-season. I don't know why posters here think Abby should be this team's enforcer.

Because he's been encouraged by Holland and Babcock to up that part of his game. Why did he take those so-called boxing lessons in the offseason?

I know he's not an enforcer, but he was the toughest guy we had in the lineup not named Ericsson or Bertuzzi. One hasn't fought in ages, and the other magically loses his balls game to game. Abby should have stepped up for the team there. Certainly he can beat someone like Legwand or Erat.

We both know Erat wouldn't drop them to save his life. Also, I absolutely agree that someone should have stepped up. I just don't agree with placing all the blame on Abby. There are plenty of Wings who could have done it, and he is just one of them.

Do you have a link to where Holland and Babcock said they want him to fight more? I honestly don't remember them saying that. I remember Abby stating the boxing lessons were fore strength and balance. While I wish they were solely for fighting, it appears that stated reasons to the press were the actual ones. Abby, like E, seems to fight only when challenged. I would love to see someone step-up like Orr does but the Wings just don't have a player like that. Obviously, it is a deficiency that needs to be addressed in the off-season because it's not happening internally. Abby probably seemed tougher in the AHL because he had legitimate enforcers on the team. Most of his AHL fights weren't against players known for their fighting skills.

It's pretty sad that Erat and Legwand were acting tough and no one stood up against them. I mean, we don't exactly need an enforcer to handle those guys.

I remember reading something on LGW about Babcock or Holland encouraging Abby to play tougher and fight occasionally. I don't remember if it was an article or just a few posters saying that it happened.

I agree. Erat plays like that a lot- and as I said in the GDT, I am waiting for him to get fed one of these days. I also noticed O'Brien acting tough against Bert all game. The punches to Eaves' head were also terrible, but I guess I understand him trying to draw a penalty. From a Wings' toughness perspective, this game was terrible all-around.

I didn't remember seeing that quote either. If that is true, than I am a bit disappointed that Abby hasn't stepped up more.

that was cody franson. 130gp in the NHL and 40 PIMs. suddenly a "tough guy" when he plays the wings. very frustrating.

Abby is now +12 on the season (second highest on the team). Also, he has three points in his last five games.

He really doesn't log many quality minutes, most of the quality minutes are logged by the first two lines, so him being +12 doesn't mean too much.

Yeah but our pp will handle things like that and really deters teams from pulling that s*** on us

Abdelkader shouldnt be counted on to do a bunch of fighting but he is a good guy to have someone who is really tough's back.

Callahan, Smith and hopefully Sheahan need to get up to this wings lineup and show these guys how to get their balls out of their purse and that sometimes fighting back can help.

Tonight one fight near the start of the game would have probably settled both teams down, but no the wings just bent over, got beat up and got beat on the scoreboard
