"rebuilding mode..." What?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

In a recent article by Dan Arritt on ESPN:LA he writes

Detroit has had three days to ponder their collapse against the Coyotes, a game in which they blew a three-goal third-period lead and lost in a shootout, 5-4. Detroit coach Mike Babcock called out his club after the loss, questioning whether it was truly a championship-caliber team. Expect those words to hit home with the veteran Red Wings, who aren’t far from falling into rebuilding mode if they don’t win the Stanley Cup this season.

Aren't far from falling into rebuilding mode without a cup this season? Is this guy even watching hockey? The UFAs we have after this season are Modano, Draper, Eaves, Miller, Lidstrom, Salei, Ericsson, Osgood, and McDonald. Of those 9, I believe Lidstrom will return after yet another Norris worthy season, Osgood and Draper will either return at reduced rates or retire, and we will most likely sign a role player like Eaves/Miller. Not to mention that I can't see Mikey retiring after a season like this without a cup. Can anyone tell me where the rebuilding is here? The offensive core is in tact until 2014-15 and the defensive core has one more year until major UFAs (Rafalski, Stuart, and Kronwall) are looking at new contracts. Of those defensive UFAs in 2012-13 I can't see us losing a whole lot that would classify us as in "rebuilding" any time soon. Does anyone else think this statement has any validity because I am just not seeing it?

That's just stupid. The team will finish no worse than in the top 5 in the regular season, How often does a top 5 team in any league enter "rebuilding" mode. And this is because of our performance in 1 game.

This guy actually got paid to write this?

Dammit! I hate when I am always the last person to find things out! Here I was thinking the Wings could compete for years to come.. how could I have been so blind!?

/Sarcasm

Come on, is it really THAT easy to get a job as a hockey writer? I am clearly pursuing the wrong career.

Not if you intend on making any money...

f*** it. after another loss like this i think its time to get rid of some older guys. aka, bring in bogosian. draper, mo, ozzie need to call it quits. im sorry, but i won't watch another year of this s*** so that our ineffective old guys can have their last kick at it. z and dats are only going to stay young for so long, lids cant stay forever, need to dump the free loaders this offseason and give this team a shot at winning.

Don't pick on Draper, he actually had a great game.

alright, if you wanna pump rainbows up his ass then go ahead. we have almost too much leadership on this team now. mursak should replace drapes next year.

Come on, now. You can never have too much leadership on a team, but at the same time, you don't want an overly elderly team. Who knows what Osgood, Draper, Modano, and Salei will do after this year. I do think we need to get a little bit younger, at least.

In other news, the sun rose in the East today and will probably settle in the West tonight. In Washington DC, more politicians will philander and jack around on your dime.

To me, saying that any team is "rebuilding" means that they are scrapping most of what they have and taking a new approach. I just don't see it for this team for a while. Even with the shifts in free agency on the defensive side of the puck that are a looming possibility in the next year, I still wouldn't call it "rebuilding." Maybe what bugs me the most is the frequency with which that term is tossed around in sports today. Obviously this guy is just looking to write something on the wings that can make it sound like they have a ***** in their armor (of course judging by the last 4 games, he could have simply said, "watch") but to talk "rebuilding," I just think it's quite an overstatement.

Babcock has even said there is a 2 year window (2011, 2012) with this team.

this guy is paid to write about hockey? wow.

whats the next thing he is going to say? "if the wings dont win the cup, Babcocks job is in danger" lol

So the writer is basically saying we have a 1 year window before we "might" have to rebuild and you go bonkers.

But Babcock says we have a 2 year window and that's all good?

I think in the next 2 years we're going to see a massive change in this roster. That's just the nature of the beast in the NHL today, especially so for a team with as many 35+ year olds on it as ours. We're going to be seeing new faces. Whereas I don't think that constitutes rebuilding, I do find it amusing that you take such offense with the writer's opinion that we've got a 1 year window and yet no offense to Babcock's opinion of a 2 year window.

He is talking about the contract status of many players over the next two years. Its simple math.
