3/11 GDT: Oilers 1 at Red Wings 2 (OT)

Just got back from the game.

The Wings were horrible defensively in the first. Four times the defense let a forward get behind them.

Howard let in a terrible goal. Wow.

Detroit was awful on the powerplay. Could get nothing going.

Lidstrom was the best Wing on the ice tonight. Glad he got the first star.

The Oilers didn't get much going at all tonight. Detroit was by far the better team.

Good, character win.

Jones needs to get a hair cut and f*** off already. What a scab.

Fun fact: When the refs skated on the ice for the third period, the fans rained down on them with boos (because of the disallowed Bertuzzi goal). Devorski shook his head in confusion and mouthed "why??" in response. I thought it was hillarious to see a ref so perplexed with a fan reaction.

I gotta say Howard held them in this one again. Bad goal to start with but he was outstanding the rest of the way.

The game winning goal and an assist ya he sucked tonight...

He came through in OT, but if you watched the game, it was mostly a very un-Datsyukian night.

glad we got the two points. But it's still worrisome that you have to steal two points from an injured Edmonton team, partly due to an extremely fortunate deflection.

Dear Pasha...in case I haven't told you lately, you are my hero.

However, I'm getting a little too old for these last minute heroics...my heart won't take all of this all the time. So could you put it away and out of reach by, say, the middle of the second? Thank you.

Your devoted Kira

Like I said earlier, I almost wish we would have lost again (although it's almost impossible to root against them) but I worry that some lucky ass win like that will only allow them to continue to play like this. We got lucky, but whatever you have to be good to be lucky

Just got back from the game. Section 208, row 10, right on top of center ice.

The first goal by Howard was disgusting. I was thinking "Here we go again..." with another loss to a sub-par team. Couldn't get anything going offensively in the 1st period, and were stonewalled by Dubnyk in the 2nd. Howie did have a great save at the end. I was seething angry after the no-goal and throughout the 3rd period when it looked like another home loss. Thanks to a lucky (karma) bounce, madness ensued when Detroit tied it and Datsyuk's wizardry set the place on fire. Great come from behind win, but it never should have gotten to that point.

I had no idea why they were waiving it off because, first off, Holmstrom wasn't near the net (or even on the ice, I don't remember). Secondly, no high stick. Third, it's a perfectly legal hockey play to have the puck deflect off of your body into the net as long as it isn't intentional. Bertuzzi would have to be God to intentionally have his palm facing the blue line and still direct the puck purposefully into the net. One of the worst non-goals of them all, and there's starting to be way too damn many of those.

I just got back from the game as well. I must say this was probably one of the most boring and painful games to watch that I've been to, barring a few minutes in the second and the last four minutes in the third + overtime. The wings really skated like they didn't care for the most part. And Howard letting in a very soft goal from the start didn't help.

A win is a win I guess, but this win really doesn't instill confidence in me. It's like my sister said: "it's sad how that you can tell now they aren't going to score for the rest of the game". She was almost right too.

You must have gone for a beer each of the 6 times they had a breakaway in the game.

Hence, you were a little too sauced to notice those plays. :D

To be fair, if a team has six break aways and the other team spends most of the time in their zone for the entire game, that's not really getting anything going.

I mentioned the four "breakaways" they had midway in the first, but other than that they really didn't do all that much.

They had some small spurts where they would get a good shot in on Howard, but after that it was usually one and done.

Howard let in a terrible goal. Wow.

And then he saved the game for the Wings too many times to count.

Again... he was quite possibly the Wings` best player. Perhaps this was harder to see in person.

Actually you could count it on two hands. He did well but I felt like pointing out the bad goal because it bugged me for the next 30 minutes to see the Wings down by a goal simply because of something like that.

Deal with it.

it was a good call. on the replay you can clearly see bertuzzi take his hand off his stick and deflect the puck with it (his left hand). it looked totally intentional and bert himself didn't argue the call afterwards. he knew.

Yeah, and the lack of offense was his fault also?

Guest Howard He Do It?!

Yes, Howard let in a soft goal but he proceeded to keep the Wings in the game while their offense did nothing until there was less than a minute left in the game. It was great to see two top guys get goals tonight but this team still has major offensive issues. You should not be playing down to the wire against the basement of the league.

I just got back from the game as well (had to drive 2 hours to get back, but such is life). I thought the wings in spite of slow start really pulled it together and played a good game. I enjoyed myself quite abit especially when the oiler fans two rows behind me got kicked out of the Joe.

So Howard does one better than last time and keeps it down to one goal against, and we're STILL complaining about him? Yeah, he really sucks, doesn't he? I can't believe he let in that one whole soft goal. I mean, there's no reason he couldn't have got us a shutout so that the rest of the team could've taken the night off...what a lazy bum. Trade him.

I'm glad we ended the losing streak, but there's no reason we shouldn't have blown the worst team in the NHL out of the water tonight. Not to mention, they had injuries.

This was the way my rec league team felt on Wednesday. They had 8 skaters, and all their top scorers were gone or out with injury. We are the #1 team in the league with a +40 goal differential. Yet it was a 2-0 nail biter to the end. Sometimes players rise up to carry a team. I think that is what you saw out of Edmonton tonight. They wanted this game and they hustled for it. In hockey at this level, there are no "blow them out of the water GUARANTEED" games like there are in the rec leagues.

I agree. If you want real hockey talk, go over to the hfboards. The hockey fans there are much more down to earth and its refreshing. I come here to discuss the games with fans of the team I love, but it seems here, too many red wings fans have brain damage.

Howard let in one bad goal. Hell, its a goal I let in probably once every two weeks. Anyway, he rebounds and plays solid, yet still gets the shaft. Just further proof of the lofty expectations that wings fans here have on their goalies. In order for a goalie to be great here, 3 of the 4 things must happen every game.

1. A shutout

2. No rebounds

3. Less than 1.50 GAA

4. Greater than a .945 Save Percentage

Print this out and circle the ones that are applicable. If you can't circle 3, he is a bad goalie and should be traded.
