Big Ten Hockey Conference coming today...

I wonder why they wouldn't include teams like Nebraska (who just entered the Big Ten in Football and Basketball)... and does this mean that the other CCHA teams will still make up their own conference?

Nebraska doesn't have a hockey team. It's Nebraska-Omaha that has a team. The remaining teams in the CCHA will still have a conference and might possibly pick up a couple new teams.

This is awful and this is greedy. Awful greedy.

What about my alma mater NMU? LSSU? Ferris, BG and on and on. Taking Minnesota and Wisconsin guts the WCHA in name, history and winning %. I would suppose the remaining WCHA and CCHA clubs could cobble together a league but the travel would kill a small school like NMU et al.

I'm with you on this. I'm a U of M student, but grew up attending all NMU games and I still follow them. I have a bad feeling that all of the small schools are going to be lucky to keep Division I programs running for very long.

maybe Arkansas Razorbacks will move up a level. 2 Straight 20+ win seasons.

Arkansas is a good DIII ACHA south team, but they failed to make nationals this year and didn't do too well at nationals last year. IMO they should stay in DIII and only move up when/if they begin to dominate DIII. Otherwise, moving up from being a top-10 DIII south team to being an average DII team is useless IMO.

Not really a fan of this, but expected once Penn State said they were fielding a team. Takes a big chunk out of CCHA and WHCA. They will still probably play a lot of teams in their "former" conferences, just not as much.

Like Michigan Tech University in the WCHA? They are such an awful team, finish with 4 wins this year and things don't look any better.

Tech is a founding member of the WCHA, and it is the main athletic program there. They are not doing well, but it is not going any where.

On the largest level there are the following divisions:

NCAA DI

NCAA DIII

ACHA DI

ACHA DII

ACHA DIII

The leagues are in relative skill level order. ACHA hockey is not NCAA regulated, but they (generally) have the same rules. However, it should be noted that there is some skill overlap. I know that top ACHA DI teams are competitive with the bottom half of the NCAA DIII schools.

ok, so its like the divisions in football (1a and 1aa, though they have the new names now), and then the CCHA, ECAC etc is like the Big 10, SEC, etc?

and for the NCAA championship, they have the brackets like basketball?

Things can change to a degree... Last year Western Michigan was a laughing stock in the CCHA. A new coach can do wonders.

Tech's biggest issue is recruiting. Not much to do up there, unless you really love winter sports. Usually have a few decent forwards and a decent goalie. Need to get better on defense. Some well known players have come from MTU:

Tony Esposito, Randy McKay, Andy Sutton, Chris Conner, Damien Rhodes to name a few.
