Here's how we win the cup

I've been alive for 23 years. I've been watching the Red Wings - seriously - for, oh, I don't know, say...16, 17 years. Tonight's game was probably the worst I've ever seen. But there was one bright spot: Mike Modano. He's got his legs back under him, for sure. It looked like he was moving very, very well. And his shot looked almost...dare I say, prime? I think it's safe to say that we've got our second sniper. Mule is Hank's. Mikey Mo is Pav's. No more wasting his skill or energy centering the third line. Put him on Pav's flank. Put Homer in front of the net. Wait for the magic.

...then, on to other things:

Mule-Hank-Bert is something we've all seen work, time and time again. No reason it shouldn't work again now. I'd like to swap Bert for Cleary...but Bert just really can't play on the bottom six. When it's clutch time, however, we'll get Clears out there.

That third line I'm not that crazy about - namely because I'm not liking what I'm seeing out of Hudler lately - especially in a bottom six role. Him and Flip might be able to get the chemistry going with Clears taking care of the dirty work though. If not...Eaves-Flip-Clears might make for a great third grind line with a bit of scoring potential.

Fourth line is what it is. Helm centering anyone we have makes it good enough to be our fourth line.

Defense. I'm scared after tonight. Let's just run back to the basics. Lids and Raffy. Kronner and Stuie. Ericsson and Salei. (please work).

...for your viewing pleasure:

Franzen-Zetterberg-Bertuzzi

Modano-Datsyuk-Holmstrom

Hudler-Filppula-Cleary

Abdelkader/Miller-Helm-Eaves

Draper

But there was one bright spot: Mike Modano.

I think this might be the key to the whole mess. Babs tells the boys...."OK, boneheads. Everybody shift into a lower gear till Mikey-Mo gets his groove on." Makes as much sense as any other fan-atic attempt at explaining why the Wings are wearing so much suck for the last 3 months. Just sayin....

People in this forum have a hard on for knocking Modano but there's no denying that he has looked good over the last few games - especially last night. For some reason he's been able to develop some chemistry with Holmstrom. The line combinations posted above are actually pretty good, in my opinion, although I do also agree with one of the other posters who mentioned that Hudler is best served in the top six as that's where he will produce the most. I actually do think the current Holmstrom - Filppula - Modano line is looking pretty good right now as well. When Pav is back I think they should run with:

Hudler - Datsyuk - Cleary

Franzen - Zetterberg - Bertuzzi

Modano - Filppula - Holmstrom

Eaves - Helm - Abdelkader

Draper, Miller

You can throw all the line combinations you want, they don't mean squat unless this team shows effort. They have the personnel and talent to win. They need to show effort to get anywhere.

:crazy::crazy: :battle:

I can't believe a thread has this title...

this is like me trying to figure out how I live in the Playboy Mansion, drive fleet of Bentleys and Lamborghinis, and sleep with a pantheon of young, robust, fecund blondes every night...

...I fall asleep and then I dream! :dozing:

In terms of line combinations, this is the only way the Wings win the cup.

Datsyuk-Datsyuk-Datsyuk

Datsyuk-Datsyuk-Cleary

Datsyuk-Datsyuk-Zetterberg

Helm-Helm-Abdelkader/Eaves

Lidstrom-Lidstrom

Lidstrom-Lidstrom

Lidstrom-Stuart

2008 Osgood

2009 Osgood

Thankyou so much for cheering up a depressed Redwings fan :)

I dont think any one is saying that line combinations alone will suddenly fix all the problems the Wings are having. Obviously the Wings need to play with a hell of a lot more effort than last night. That being said, we all know that different lines have varying amounts of chemistry and can fill various roles on a team. Each of us have our own preference as to which lines we think can do what. You could have 4 lines of 3 Datsyuks, as many posters in many threads have suggested, but if they were to play like the Wings did last night it wouldnt matter. But let's assume, for all of our sanities, that come playoff time the level of engagement and compete will be far better come mid-April

I don't get the putting Hudler on the third or fourth line.

Hudler was playing with Datsyuk and Cleary. While that line was together, for more than ten games, all three were on pace for about 100 points.

Before that, for another 15-20 games, Hudler was on pace for around 70 points playing on the second line.

Yes, Hudler has not been scoring close to that recently. Why? He got dumped down to the third or fourth line (depending on the game) for a good stretch, just because Franzen is a lazy f*** who shows up once every seven to ten games to score a goal or two, and is no better defensively than Hudler despite having started his NHL career as a defensive specialist.

Since Hudler/Datsyuk/Cleary was separated, because Babcock wanted to get Franzen going:

Franzen: 10 GP, 1-6-7

Hudler: 11 GP, 2-2-4

This is with Franzen averaging about four more minutes per game. Hudler has kept up his strong play despite the line being broken up, his ice time simply was slashed and he was typically placed with linemates who couldn't benefit from his offensive play the way Datsyuk and Cleary did. Yes, Hudler benefited as well, but that's the way good scoring lines work.

As I say every time you post this same old s***, so was Aaron Downey during his 4 games in the 08-09 season.

Hudler was scoring at a great pace for 30 games, and he was just demoted to the fourth line because Babcock wanted to put Franzen in his spot, and the other lines were playing well.

How would you like it if you were at your job, one of the best performers over the past couple of months, going for a promotion, and suddenly you are told "This other guy who hasn't been doing well, but was doing well a while back and every now and then has a good day, is getting that promotion instead in the hopes that he starts performing the way he used to."

That's crap.

consider Datsyuk and Filppula interchangeable.

Hudler has 10 goals in 60 some games, i somehow doubt he was scoring at a great pace for 30 games

Heres how we win the cup. We go back to what has worked in the past. Reunite the Euro twins. Fil's a pretty good defensive center mixed with Franzen and Cleary they can help try to shut down the teams second line. Scoring will come D must be first priority in the playoffs.

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Holmstrom

Franzen-Filpula-Cleary

Hudler-Helm-Bertuzzi

Andelkader-Modano-Eaves

Lidtrom-Rafalski

Kronwall-Stuart

Ericsson-Salei
