Guest L3T5G0W1NG5 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 (edited) ONE "Gordie Howe Hat Trick" in his WHOLE career. It's kind of silly that it's named after him.... Edited March 31, 2011 by L3T5G0W1NG5
newfy 695 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 Well thats what they say but I'm pretty sure he would've had more then that. The way penalties were called back then he was probably in scrums all the time drilling guys in the head with no call etc. And anyways, the original gordie howe hatrick was an elbowing penalty, not a fighting major
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 ok, that's kind of out of blue, what's the point? This has been discussed here before. Even though he may have "statistically" earned it once, it's named after him more because he was a big (in his era), tough customer, who could score goals and also set up plays (all around guy). Howe could have zero "Gordie Howe Hattricks" but that's not really the point.
lookalive07 251 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 ok, that's kind of out of blue, what's the point? Today is Mr. Hockey's Birthday, so I'm guessing that's the inspiration for the thread.

Doc Holliday 1,888 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 Pretty sure fights were marked down as roughing majors back in the day. Someone who actually saw him play can confirm or deny that.
hooon 1,089 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 They also named it the Mark Messier Leadership Award. The names aren't always the most appropriate, but what can ya do? 1 Nevermind reacted to this
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 I've heard anywhere from 0-6 with regards to Howe having the GH Hat trick. Honestly, I don't know where people are pulling these numbers from but it's a different number everytime it's discussed. Someone needs to get to the bottom of this. seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 Brendan Shanahan hat trick just doesn't have the same ring to it though... 1 MulesWillFly93 reacted to this
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 Gordie Howe was known for being a tough guy. He was also well known as a goal scorer. He was also well known as a play maker. The name seems appropriate, no? Also, I've heard that Howe only having one GHHT is a myth, and the correct answer is closer to 3 or so. But who knows for sure? Jedi 1,865 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 When Miller had a goal and a fight against Columbus, Ken and Mickey said that Howe only had two GH Hat Tricks in his career. But I've heard from different sources anywhere from zero to three. Just seems like records weren't kept meticulously like they are now, and the refs & official scorekeepers definitions of "fight" may have been vastly different too. egroen 384 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 (edited) A hockey historian went through old game logs and found Howe had two officially. At one point I remember Shanahan had the most ever with around 13. But yes, a lot of 5 minute fighting calls nowadays were 2 minute roughing penalties back in the day. Howe didn't have to fight much anyways, because when he did - he really hurt people. Edited March 31, 2011 by egroen
GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 The NHL should keep a stat for these, and at the end of the year, give out a "Gordie Howe Award" for the player with the most of these.
cjm502 165 Report post Posted March 31, 2011 I gave it a quick google but couldnt find it right away, but im not saying any of you have to believe me. I have read quotes from players and coaches of his era saying Howe fought so much his first season Jack Adams was getting very upset with him and I cant remember what but he was disciplining Howe for not being able to control his temper. He has 2 officially, but im sure if there were better records taken he would have many many more.
WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted April 1, 2011 Ya know Mick, Malts was a 50 goal scorer in juniors. Livonia native Mike Modano with the puck. Hall of Famer Larry Murphy now joins us. Well Mick, you were the first 50 goal scorer for this organization. Hard to believe Kris was had for $1 from Winnipeg, Mick. I'm sure there are more...thread derailed
