NJ Devils' playoff appearance streak ends

The New Jersey Devils' streak of 13 consecutive playoff appearances came to a quiet end on Saturday night.

The Devils officially were eliminated from the playoffs for the first time since 1996 when they were beaten 3-1 at the Prudential Center by the Montreal Canadiens, who all but clinched a playoff berth with the victory.

"We knew it was going to come," goaltender Martin Brodeur said after the Devils' playoff run was stopped at 13 seasons. "It doesn't come as a shocker. We had a good run, played really hard to get ourselves in position to compete. It was just too much. We've got four more games and we'll try to keep doing what we've been doing."

The Devils will miss the playoffs for just the third time in the last 23 seasons. They paid the price for a horrible first half that saw them go 10-29-2 -- most of it under rookie coach John MacLean.

The Devils are 12th in the East, 10 points behind the Rangers, with 4 games left. The highest they can get would obviously 9th (now occupied by the Hurricanes).

Atlanta is eliminated too. They can get 86 points at most.

Wow, I'm really suprised at that. I mean I'm not really based on how their play was this season but it's hard to believe the Devils won't be in the playoffs this season. Just goes to show how much the league in my opnion is changing and getting younger and I think most teams are going to have to realize that and start adjusting if they won't to compete.

...aaand the oldest team in the league just clinched a playoff spot for 20th time in as many years. Hahaha.

That sucks. Some years it always felt like NJ and DET went hand in hand. NJ win a cup in 95, oh yeah? DET wins one in 97, what now? Oh, NJ gots one in 2000? Well DET now has one in 02? Now God doesn't have it's Devil counterpart. And yes the Red Wings are God in this analogy. Unless the East comes up with a new Devil for God, God might just go insane with boredom. I see much potential in Philly.

Sucks for Jersey. I'm more interested in how the standings are ending up. It looks like the West is basically settled. I don't see Dallas cracking into the playoffs, so it's just a matter of whether or not Calgary can get in and the final order of standings.

Dallas is in better shape than Calgary. I'd much rather have 2 more games to play and 2 fewer points and Dallas' schedule is ridiculously easy. But the only way they get in is if the Wings sweep the Hawks the last 2 games of the season. Here are the updated standings...

West

1) VAN: 113 (79 GP)x+

2) DET: 102 (79 GP)x

3) SJS: 101 (78 GP)x

4) LAK: 96 (78 GP)

5) PHO: 96 (79 GP)

6) NSH: 95 (79 GP)

7) ANA: 93 (79 GP)

8) CHI: 92 (78 GP)

------------------

9) CGY: 91 (80 GP)

10) DAL: 89 (78 GP)

I really would rather we not play Anaheim....

I'd love to see it. I'm pulling for Dallas the last few weeks.
