Petr Mrazek signs ATO with Griffins

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

According to The Left Wing Lock, 2010 draft pick Petr Mrazek has signed an ATO with the Griffins in the hope that he can see some time between the pipes in Grand Rapids and get some experience while they're still playing (note that ATO games like this don't count towards the limited number of pro games a player can play before they are no longer waiver exempt).

I wouldn't read too much into this other than the fact that the Wings like this kid and want to get him some pro experience. The best Wings draft picks have done the ATO thing with the Griffs quite a bit in recent years.

The future Red Wing goalie getting an early start. He'll more than likely stay in the CHL next year, but this is great for him!

Agreed. He'd really have to turn some heads to make an early jump to the AHL. Tommy McC probably scared them off that route.

They've only got a couple of games left, so if he's going to join them it had better be soon. I'd be pretty surprised if he was in net on Friday, since it's their last home game of the year - but I'm all for getting new kids some experience.

Worth a bump. Pretty excited about this kid.

HIGH PRAISE FOR MRAZEK: Legendary Ottawa 67's general manager Brian Kilrea absolutely heaped praise on Petr Mrazek in an Ottawa Citizen article this week, calling him "as good as" any goaltender in franchise history.

"He amazes me sometimes with his quickness," Kilrea said. "He makes the impossible seem so easy. He never gives up on a play. He will forever make that big save. I can remember maybe a bad goal or two. But I can't remember a bad game."

Mrazek, who signed an amateur tryout with the Griffins after the 67's were eliminated from the Ontario Hockey League playoffs last week, started 52 games this season and had a 2.84 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage. He is expected to play another year of junior before turning pro.

"We don't win some of the games we won this year without the best goalie in the league," Kilrea said in the Ottawa Citizen article. "You can crunch all the numbers of any player in the league and no one has been more valuable to his team than Petr. Detroit (Red Wings) made an unbelievable pick."

Are they officially eliminated yet?

Worth a bump. Pretty excited about this kid.

I, by no means wish to be perceived as a buzzkill. Yet I think it would be wise to note that excitement was high for both Larsson and McCollum. I always love hearing how the next best thing is property of the Wings, but it is in no way a certain thing.

I understand but have you seen him play?

I’m also excited about this year’s playoffs. Have I bet my mortgage on the Wings winning?

Yeah, he really plays hard and controls the puck and the game. I know he can own the juniors. I thought Larsson was going to be better than Howard though, and McCollum was going to be a bluechip. Neither came true, so I am just waiting until he has a few seasons under his belt in GR before I decide.

I am excited to see him play, but not if he is going to ruin his confidence.

The guy could be a starter.

Saw him play a game here(Sudbury) during the first round of the OHL playoffs in which the Wolves swept him and the 67's. Can't say he looked all that great that game, and heard he was nothing spectacular all series. Did'nt know he was a highly touted prospect in the Wings system. lol Guy musta been off his game a tad eh?

You must have seen his bad game, a poster on HF said he saw all the games and in the others Mrazek was nothing short of spectacular. I would paste his entire post on here but that thread got deleted yesterday.

Its true that goalies are the most unpredictable players to project potential for, but Mrazek is supposed to be one of the most competitive goalies in the CHL, and he has awesome athleticism. His competitiveness alone makes me feel that much better about him.

Not to discredit your evaluation of players but:

Again, don't worry about Mrazek's stats. He was great, besides a few goals in the first game.
He was phenomenal. Game 2 was one of the greatest performances I have ever seen. One of the games people say if it wasnt for him it would have been 8-3.... BS would have been 15 to 3. Fans booed when he was only second star. got a standing O.

Hmmm. Guess what I had heard about his performances in the other 3 games was bull. Hopefully he turns out well for the Wings in the future, especially with how shaky things are in goal at this point.

Howard hasn't proven anything, and Larsson is a very good prospect. Larsson turns UFA in two years, so we may well see him come back over and play in the NHL. Howard has had one good season and one mediocre season, and is two years older than Larsson. So calling the Howard v. Larsson comparison over is a bit premature.
