Modano a healthy scratch

Definitely a big fan of this move. Drew Miller is one of our grittiest players, which will be needed against this Phoenix team. I am not taking them lightly one bit. If it wasn't for Shane Doan's injury, we could have lost to them last season. Modano will be back later on, so no one get too sensitive about this. But Miller gives us another penalty killer and a motivated person to stay in the lineup. Bet money on it that he will play harder than anyone else on the ice tonight.

If you ask me, if he really is thinking he is going to retire, I admire that he is being open about it. Think about it, if he lets it be known that this is his last chance at a Cup, then it is going to provide an extra dose of motivation for the boys in Red, and don't think that doesn't actually work (see Dallas Drake in 2008). Babcock should be giving Modano the chance to start the playoffs before Miller imo simply because he is Mike Modano and I truly think he will be giving it his all in the playoffs to reach lord stanley...

You dont make that kind of announcement before the end of the season. It's not a team kind of thing to say. I could see this miffing some red wings brass considering i think they were under the impression he may play next year....

I respectfully disagree with you. I think it might have been more of a dick move if Modano was on fire all year and played like he was 30 while putting up 10-20 goals. But he didn't he has played like he was 40. I dont think anyone was seriously under the impression he would be back next year, especially on a Wings team he struggles to be in the lineup for now. I don't see the harm in him suggesting he probably will retire. That way the team can focus on playing and he can focus on giving it one last run.

I disagree with you.

If you're sure you're done after this year let the management know. Let the players know and try to rally them around it. Don't go and tell a bunch of reporters that your body and brain aren't hacking it anymore.

You're welcome to disagree with me all you like, but I think the point you are making is irrelevant in Modano's case. The guy hasn't been that good when he played this year and he suffered what could have been a career ending injury. If it was someone else and it was some big surprise they were retiring then most definitely keep that s*** private and behind closed doors. But that's not the case here, very few, if any, were expecting Modano to play next year after the way this season has gone for him, there is no point in him hiding it or trying to ***** foot around it.

You seem to be assuming a lot.

"My body has been telling me and so has my head," Modano said. "I knew that if the body wasn't doing things on the ice that I was accustomed to doing, it was time to move on. There are subtle signs that I've gotten that it's only going to get worse. I can't stay on the ice as long as I used to, things like that."

What exactly am I assuming?

In a playoff style game like this getting chippy in the corners, hard checks, and even Miller's ability to go to the net highly outweigh what Modano has done of late. I feel the opposite with this.

agreed. I really like Miller's heart!

You're assuming that he didn't let the management and other players know first.

I never said he didn't. Who's assuming?

Edit: I said don't go and tell reporters you can't handle it. I included the bit about players and management to show I felt it's ok for him to tell them.

he just came out to say "his mind and body arent in it"

WTF man...keep it behind closed doors until after the season....you would never hear a lidstrom or an yzerman say this..

heres the specific quote

"My body has been telling me and so has my head,” Modano said.

Does he realize we have 2 months of games potentially to play?

Man... I really like the guy but I also think some of the things he said should have been kept until after the playoffs. You can't help but think all he is thinking about now is the free time he will have after the playoffs. Hopefully a game 1 scratch lights a fire under his ass because we might need him if we go on a long run.

Modano hasn't been amazing, but he;s still a much better option than Miller. Dumb move IMO.

In Modano's interviews he gives off this vibe of not really caring or trying, focusing more on not having the passion anymore, he says (to summarize). I'd take that as a big alarm bell going into a grueling second season if I were Babcock. Talent or no, in the playoffs I'd rather have someone like Miller who will give his all and wreak havoc in the other team pressure-wise.

Modano a healthy scratch?

Maybe we will see:

Hudler/Datsyuk/Holmstrom

Franzen/Filppula/Bertuzzi

Cleary/Abdelkader/Eaves

Draper/Helm/Miller.

Or even better...

Maybe we see a line of Hudler/Draper/Eaves, and they score a goal? If only Doan was on our team.

After those quotes, keep him out the whole way then. If the "mind and body" crap comes up then we really don't need him out there. Miller can bring it and has every time he has played.

There might be something to the fact that these quotes came after* he was scratched. He has always striked me as a little bit of a drama queen even though i still think he was one of the greatest players of all time.

Well, looking back, he's mentioned a few times about not being totally in it to win. He's always sounded a little like he wished he would have retired and was just going through the motions, plus the baggage from Dallas fans mentioning he had become lazy.

I don't know, it's a bust. He may have been a 3rd liner but we all hoped he would be that veteran we needed to win in the playoffs. He's no Dallas Drake, or even a Hossa, if he can't even justify being in the lineup.

Him being in the lineup all season has really hurt some of the line juggling, I think. The Wings didn't want to bench him because there wasn't as much on the line, we were hoping he'd kick into higher gear, and all the other things that go along with it. Maybe this will give Babcock the freedom to go with some really dynamic lines.

Gee all this talk about this series being chippy and Miller being tougher than Modano, but lets keep Cream Puff Hudler in the game.... Horrible horrible decision... This team is far better with Modano in and Hudler OUT!

So...your idea is to remove a soft, lazy player who scores in favor of a soft, lazy player who doesn't?
