Zetterberg Injury Update

I would rest Zetterberg until Round 2. I'm not trying to sound too cocky in assuming the Wings will take the series. I just don't see it going over 5 games. The Yotes just don't have the offensive power to compete with the Wings. Having said that, wait until the Wings play San Jose/Nashville/Anaheim/etc in Round 2 to play Zetterberg.

Some Zetterberg tweets (good ones too)

RT @RedWingsFeed: Zetterberg still skating gingerly #redwings

RT @RedWingsFeed: Zetterberg still practicing and is now solo skating, giving his knee a pretty solid test #redwings

RT @RedWingsFeed: Based on the last sequence of Zetterberg skating I would say the odds of him playing tomorrow have gone up significantly #redwings

Keep working it Z! Take your time!

You don't want them to win in 4? Or just don't think they will? ...Or do you want them to win at home?

Since this could be the only round where we have home ice advantage, I want a game 5 for no other reason that to have another home game to generate revenue. Plus, you know, winning at home.

All three of those teams play very physically. How's about we save him until the SCF?

Well its official.... Z will not play in game 3

RT @Real_ESPNLeBrun: Zetterberg skated today here in Phoenix but Babcock says he won't play tomorrow night

the fact that he made the trip is a confidence booster for me

obviously you are joking, but there is 0% chance this team makes it past the sharks without him

let's hope he's ready for game 1 of round 2.

Scottsdale, Ariz. -- Henrik Zetterberg was on the ice for the Red Wings' practice Sunday, while Johan Franzen earned some rest.

Zetterberg, nursing a left knee sprain, was on the ice for the entire hour-long practice, although he didn't take part in any of the physical, battling drills. Still, he felt it was a positive step.

"It felt better than yesterday," Zetterberg said. "I don't know if I did that much, not really into the battle drills, but it was fun to be out there.

"Step by step."

Coach Mike Babcock ruled Zetterberg out for Game 3, saying there's no lineup changes at this time.

Zetterberg said he tweaked the knee during a workout early Saturday morning with the Wings' Black Aces, minor-league players called up for the playoffs.

Video on "Hockey Night in Canada" showed Zetterberg skating gingerly off the ice and in the locker room.

"But they didn't show when I skated back and skated for 30 minutes," Zetterberg said. "I wasn't overly concerned."

Said Babcock: "He came back and practiced (Saturday) and practiced with our guys today and it's a confidence builder. We just go on from here."

Zetterberg wouldn't put a definite percentage on where he's at physically.

"Probably 5 percent better than yesterday," Zetterberg said.

And what did he feel like the day before?

"I would say between 40 and 70, maybe," Zetterberg smiling. "As I said, I felt better than yesterday. As long as the progress is going that way, I'm happy."

Just shut this series down soon here and get Hank back for the 2nd.

I think the only reason he made the trip is because that's where the medical staff is going to be

Red Wings have kept his appearance uncertain, so it means phoenix has to be prepared in case he does play. The team physical trainers are in phoenix. He's an assistant captain and having him in the locker room > him missing.

I don't expect to see him at all in this series, but hopefully he can make his appearance in the 2nd round. Is Modano ever going to play in the playoffs this year?

Not until the Wings atleast lose a game. In the playoffs Babs is known for not tinkering with a lineup that's just come off a win.

Would Pavel Datsyuk have played as well as he has if Z were in the lineup?

I had the same thought. It seems the last two years or so they play best when the other is injured, oddly enough. They really shine when they have to carry the team. But when they're together it's almost like they don't want to steal the spotlight from the other and so neither is as stellar.

Possibly something as simple as either player is able to be selfish in the absence of the other. Instead of realizing the talent sitting next to them when they're both playing, they take it upon themselves to take-over the game.
