WCSF Game 1 GDT: Red Wings 1 at Sharks 2 (OT)

Reffing wasn't the greatest but that wasn't the reason we lost. We were outplayed, lucky to be leading 1-0 going in the third. The better team won ... although it would have been nice to steal one. Only player that showed up was Howard. Gotta be pleased about our goaltending, now if we can get our forwards going. Let's try to take 1 out of 2.

And yet again, a open pessimist gets angry for being called out on it. Strange.

You mean you didn't expect it?

To the doomsayers:

If you have no faith, I have a request. Leave. Put down the remote, stop watching, and leave those of us who believe alone.

If the Wings lose 1, I say they'll win in 5.

If the Wings lose 2, I say they'll win in 6.

If the Wings lose 3, I say they'll win in 7.

Just believe.

Yes. The wings should have played better and will need to in order to win this series. But the fact of the matter is they were a goal ahead with less than 10 mins to play and two embellished/bad calls cost them the win. It's hard to feel that this wasn't daylight robbery!

Doesn't have the skill? His finesse has been much improved and he's one of the few really physical wings. I'm genuinely curious now, have you always not liked Abby? Not judging, just want to know if this is frustration from the OT or a genuine hatred for him all season

Who cares?

Point is, he shouldn't be centering that line. The combos need to be split up better to give Hank and Pavel each their own line to center.

Wow, why is everyone being so harsh on abby?

is this a serious question? he turned a 3 on 1 in OT into a 4 minute PK.

he must be partially retarded.

Detroit needs to find a way to get more shots to the net, plain and simple. The first line generated some chances, and they actually cycled pretty well in the first period, but that was about it. Niemi is ripe to get blown up ... just gotta get some shots and get to the net.

This.

And it's absolutely due to the long layoff. This team was in a great offensive rhythm in the 1st round.

6 to 2 the power play advantage for san jose. Mmm. yeah. 6 penalties to a team that was the least or second least penalized team in the league. MMMMmMmmm yeahhhhhhhhhh

Oh but the refs are human and make mistakes. MMMMMMM right. How long will people continue to actually believe that bulls***?

Wings definitely need to play better otherwise. They didn't have the puck enough, and didn't sustain much offensive pressure. They let Niemi off the hook. Most of the shots he faced were not threatening in the least.

But the question continues to be, why do the wings continue to be penalized one of the most in the league in the playoffs but the least in the regular season?

I've been thinking the last few years the refs are told to make called based on the score, not on what actually happens, to keep the game as close as they can for exciting finishes. Tonight is another example of that.

Detroit should have had 2 more power plays in the 1st, but since they were up 1-0, there were no calls.

What a disgrace NHL officiating is.

The thing that I find unbelievable is that the linesman from the finals last year has now been suspended for maybe or maybe not taking the winning puck out of the net after Kane's goal.

Yet refs who are completely and utterly incompetent and inconsistent are not held accountable for their performance on the ice. It blows my mind.

It bothers me about 10,000 times more because this is exactly how last year's series got away. Outside of the Game 3 collapse, the Wings were right with the Sharks last year and all the diving and embellishment gave San Jose every chance in the world to win the series. The fact that this series started with the same B.S. is just extremely frustrating.

We'll get them on Sunday. It sucks we lost on a bulls*** goal but if you think the Red Wings deserved to win this game, then you must be out of your damn mind. If you are bashing the Wings and saying this series is over, do everyone a favor and go kill yourself or at least get off of this board. This board is for fans...not you fair-weather s***heads who cry at the first sight of a weakness. Yeah we lost, so what?!?! Is it the first time the WIngs have lost in the playoffs...NO! Go put your head in your pillow and get the hell over it! Red Wings will rebound and will be better.

For everyone calling for Gator's head....go f*** yourself. He has played amazing all season! He has one bad penalty and a very in opportune moment. He works his ass off every night and hustles to every puck. Shut the f*** up and move on.

You fair-weather assholes make me so damn mad cause all you do is wait for weakness and then scream. I hope all of you look in the mirror in the morning and realize that you aren't a Wings fan. All you are is a person who wears the Jersey cause you think it's cool. SHUT. THE. f***. UP!

Red Wings FAN till I die!

You really need to understand the difference between fans being very frustrated and bandwagon fans. Big difference. I do agree people need to stop calling for Abby's head after that bad penalty. He's a key part of this team now.

With that said, fans have every right to be upset with their team that looked sluggish after the 1st period. I don't understand it either. Wings looked good in the 1st and then seemed to go into prevent mode for 2 and 3. WTF is with that?

No one blame the refs it's the Sharks who cannot stop embellishing calls. This is unreal eventually it will bite them in the ass and the Wings will benefit.

We have guys that embellish calls to.

In fact, we need to do it better to match San Jose. Franzen and Homer need to take over.

The Wings struggled this game, no doubt about it, but can someone please explain to me how one of the least penalized teams in the regular season becomes one of the most penalized in the playoffs? The team as a whole, with a few exceptions, could win a collective Lady Byng. I'm confused.

Devin Setoguchi

Don't forget Pavelski.

Wings defense hasn't been that great but consider that the Sharks can't score s*** on them even strength, just like the Coyotes.

Ironic how their regulation goal was a power play goal on a beautiful oscar-like sell by Pavelski turning around to see Bert coming then turning back to the boards to make sure he can sell the inevitable hit hockey players are taught to make.

Then of course the ironic 4 minute call and the goal that ensues just seconds after the power play expires.

Sharks aren't on par with the Wings even strength, despite being able to hold the zone quite often, which itself is nerve-wracking but the Sharks are decent offensively. The Wings can easily defend them, they just can't do that plus continuously kill penalties for bull s*** calls.

Look at it this way, sharks played a great game tonight. Had well over 40 shots.

Wings played one good period tonight. Will improve. NO DOUBT

I thought the refs were going to play good tonight the first 2 periods were some what fair. letting a lot go, than the third. All I ask from the refs is to call it fair. There was plenty of calls that could have gone against the sharks. If your going to call the small bulls*** call it on both teams.

Split it sunday and were back on track. Like a lot of you said cant go 16-0 got to lose some.

Id like the wings to be more physical next game, forecheck harder, and get their PP going.

A lot of you need to STFU about the series being over and losing faith after one game so annoying. Where is the block button?

And just like last year, we weren't the team scoring in the 3rd and in OT.

Winning the Cup is about overcoming adversity, and we weren't good enough to do it last year. Not good enough to do it tonight either.

They're just more clutch than the Wings right now. That needs to change.

In fact, we had our chances, but couldn't bury them like championship teams have to do. Two great chances in OT went to s***.

The problem is that some people around here would say you're simply whining about the refs. I tell those people to go f*** themselves. There is no other sport where referees can have such a profound impact on a game. The NBA comes somewhat close but only in the last couple minutes of a game. In this game anytime in the game it can have a hugely profound affect. So, when the refs decide to give penalties to a team that doesn't deserve the penalty, then yeah we feel robbed.

Well, wait a minute. Is this about Abby or is this about the twins? And I care. Although his immaturity showed tonight, I think he outplays miller and eaves every night. Why is Abby singled out? (btw, still want an answer on the long team / short team about Abby, although i suspect the former)
