As soon as I saw the blantant trip on Helm right in front of the refs, I knew Detroit were going to have an uphill battle against the refs. Sure enough. Refs decided that game. Wings played the perfect road game defensively and Howard played like the best goalie in the entire playoffs. If the game was called fairly, Wings would be up 1-0 right now.

Z wasn't himself (expected), Dats was good, Helm, Flip and Huds each played well but not up to their normal level. Franzen was a waste of ice time; he didn't get a single shot on net and wasn't even really a threat. That will have to change.

I'm not sure whether I would change the top two lines; switching Huds and Z might help, but other than that it largely comes down to Huds not putting it away, Flip not shooting, and Franzen not showing up.

A good argument could be made to swap Abby and Helm; possibly even sit Abby and put Draper on the fourth line. I'd say at least give it another game though, maybe try Cleary/Helm/Bert out in practice. Or another option would be rolling out Z/Dats/Bert, Huds/Flip/Franzen, Cleary/Helm/Eaves, and Miller/Draper/Holmstrom. The listed fourth line is more of a "substitutes" list than anything. Homer would work in for Bert, Huds, and Franzen; Miller would PK and work in for Cleary/Eaves, and Draper would PK and work in for anyone on the third line.

What I'm saying you can't sit back with a 1-0 lead for 2 and 1/2 periods. Niemi isn't that great a goalie, we will have to get more than one damn goal; that said I think they will come out play with

some attitude next game. I hope anyway. See you all Sunday.

Absolutely! They played on their heals for both the 2nd and 3rd, overconfident from the domination in the 1st. I think the attitude thing is a good assessment, it was obvious they didnt have passion...except for Pasha, beast every second he's on the ice, he just needs his teammates to act the same way

Wait, Hudler didn't play well?

Wow, seems not much changes around here. Team loses a game and the only possible excuse is officiating. If this is true, I would suggest the wings learn to flop better. Clearly that is the key to winning a series against the sharks.....LOL

To the rest who saw a fairly tight game, lets see what happens game 2, have a feeling the wings players are going to shake off the rust and come out firing. Have a feeling this is going to be a much tighter series then last year, wouldn't be surprised with low scoring and 7 games. Good luck guy's!

Pavelski is a little rat, he turned to the boards on purpose right when Bertuzzi hit him and then cried like the a ***** to get sympathy from the refs and it gets called boarding lolol, hockey is not what it used to be too many soccer players with ice skates. Sharks outplayed the crap out of the Wings, not taking anything away there but they tied it on a joke of a call.

We haven't been a good OT team for a long time.

Starting to look like the Dave Lewis days, when we always lost in OT.

I wonder why that is. In this particular case it was luck and a bad penalty, but Howard looked very calm, confident and collected. Could it be our forwards that get to jittery and desperate?

Mursak. Team needs more Mursak. More speed and intensity.

We could all use a little Mursak in our lives.

God enjoys giving Wings fans heart attacks in OT.

I mean ... that wasn't a bad OT. Franzen almost won it on a deflection, the top line was buzzing on its first shift and if Datsyuk had shot from the circle instead of dropping it back to the line, it might have been lights out. And the Abdelkader group had a 3 on 1 that he just took a steaming dump on. They killed off a 4-minute penalty. They just got caught at the end of a long shift and San Jose got a stupid, ridiculous bounce for the win. The OT period was the best the Wings skated since the end of the 1st.

Wow is that what happened on the bertuzzi penalty??!! I was getting beer for me and my buddy (sharks "fan") so I didn't see it but he said it was a good call. Typical sharks crew never shows replays that are against their team! When lidstrom scored I swear they only showed the replay until the fuxking intermission.

Problem #1 was finishing. That will come with timing. Keep doing what they're doing. PLEASE Keep Thornton's line out against Datsyuk Z and Homer.

No panic. More hard work. They have fresh legs. The payoff will come.

After tonight I'm reminded of the WCF with Colorado in 1997 after game 1. The Wings played hard and well but Roy was stellar and the Avs won. The Wings just kept playing their game and worked even harder and won games 2, 3 and 4.

That game was jokes.

Team played terrible. If we bow out in this round something needs to be done.

Dont you dare even think such a thing...! No other team but MY TEAM punts Detroit from the playoffs this year, I've waited way too long for this!

Unfortunately a good portion of fellow Wings fans only complain about the reffing when it's the Red Wings on the s***ty end of the stick.

On the other hand, the complaints are significantly less, especially on my part, if the dumbass ref who called the boarding penalty that Pavelski sold had actually paid attention to the fact that he was looking behind to make sure he would get that call and re-face the boards. Unfortunately too many bad calls like this happen, so don't be surprised when people who are on the opposing team get pissed about it. As mentioned, I just wish they didn't wait until it was the Red Wings getting the shaft to complain about s***ty refs.
8 minutes of penalties in the next 13 minutes of game action

just a point to the people saying det played poorly or whatever. SJ is a PRO team just like DET. DET could prolly play 4 on 5 all night against college teams and win every time.

8 minutes of penalty time in 13 minutes? even the yotes could be expected to score given that.

so saying DET should have creamed SJ like they were a college team is a nice wish, but these are pro teams in the playoffs. cant always expect DET to give 110% every second while the other teams waltz around at 90% and get penalties handed to them.

just to repeat "8 minutes of penalty time in 13 minutes"

thats like putting 8 concrete blocks in a race car and expecting him to beat the other race car. Sure the weighed down car can be asked to put up more hustle and skill... but it doesnt change the fact that theres 8 concrete blocks effing things up.
