Changes in the offseason

It depends. It's likely Holland will want to give him an extra season to see what he has in him...

<_<

That's the impression I have as well. I can already see the season previews where Kenny says, "He struggled last season but we always like to give our players an opportunity" and bla bla bla.

predicted moves by holland:

bring draper back at a discount

bring osgood back at a discount

don't trade hudler

give ericsson a raise

makes me sick just thinking about it.

Free agent defensemen for 2011 with a current contract of 2mil and under.

Obviously we're looking for an upgrade for Salei and/or Ericsson.

I know some people here have already mentioned their dreams to acquire Shane O'Brien. Any other preference?

i heard he and bertuzzi are bffs.

The thought of this team coming back mostly intact makes me mental. Looking at this list of 2-mil and under free agents, that's a sad list.

In my opinion, we have to get younger, faster, and more physical. Not goonery, but harder to play against. More Helm-like. If I could give his motor to every player on the team...

Oh, yeah, and Hudler's gotta go. No more reclamation projects. I wanted to get James Neal at the trade deadline, young and fairly physical and loves to shoot the puck. we need more triggermen, less passers.

Mursak will be on the roster. There's no question in my mind. There is a huge difference between where he is at and where Ritola was at and there is no way Holland let's another prospect walk. Modano is gone for sure. He will retire and even by some weird turn of events and he ends up playing there's just no way he is brought back into the mix here. He didn't mesh into the line up and the guy just doesnt have anything left in the tank. So there's your roster spot for Mursak.

The only way the Wings add a different look up front for another forward is if there is a suitable upgrade to be had over Miller or Draper. That is if Draper retires or there's a deal that just has to be done. I'd imagine we'll be seeing something like that includes a dream addition of a someone like Kevin Bieksa (which probably couldn't happen) but the point is they could upgrade a forward spot or a defensemen spot:

Evgeni Nabokov is still NYI property. The Islanders gave Nabokov permission to play at the IIHF World Championships on the condition that he would not contest to them tolling (extending) his contract through the 2011-12 season for his failure to report to the team

I don't see many changes happening this off-season. I think the Wings will keep a lot of flexibility for the 2011/2012 off season where we could see some major changes. I'd like to see the Wings get a little younger and a little harder to play against this off season (like many others on LGW) the Changes I would make:

Out: Modano, Draper, Salei

In: Wisniewski, and a third or fourth line forward like LaRose, Fiddler or Upshall

I think the emergence of Mursak/Tatar and Kindl/Smith will give us the depth we need.

Let me say thank you to the Wings. They did a good job all season long and I'm proud to be a Wings fan!

This offseason we need some changes.

What do you think?

- Lids has to stay for one more season

- Mo, Drapes, Osgood, Salei have to go

- Keep Joey Mac, he was fine for me

- Try to sell Hudler or Filppula, 3 M can be better used (buyout?)

- Re-sign Miller, Eaves, Ericcson

- We have at least 6.5 M left (if the cap doesn't change)... who would you acquire?

I can agree with this, but beef up the backup goaltending position, trade Hudler and KEEP ERICSSON. I know he get's a lot of flack on the forums, but he's going to be great. I thought he was fine. I would like to see Holland replace Salei with another top-4 shut down mean Stuart/Seabrook type d-man with the left over cap space.

If the cap goes up, Holland should invest in a top 6 two-way forward like a Mike Fisher.

Draper, Modano, Ericsson and Salei all let go. Trade Hudler for something if we can.

Smith to be on the team full-time next season, try and get a decent bottom 3 defencemen with the money we have freed up.

I'm not trying to single out your post, I've seen this posted a few times... Smith is not ready for the NHL. He's 2-years away from cracking the big league. I watched him in Grand Rapids, and he's not living up to the hype. He's overrated right now. He makes lots of bone head plays...and I don't expect him to be nothing more than a Kronwall lite at the peak of his career. What I am trying to say is he's not the 'savior' that everyone wants to believe.

Ericsson should be re-signed on the cheap... say $1.25 mil per. He shouldn't be the scape goat of the team, he's been very serviceable in a salary cap world. I remember Jiri Fischer was a bone head too at times. Fischer use to make me cringe like Ericsson has made me do... difference is Ericsson will come a lot cheaper and still has upside.

I think that if we want to see Filppula on Pav's wing then the Wings need to acquire a solid third line center.

I think Brooks Laich isn't a realistic option but even if he was I'm not so sure he'd respond well to the multiple tasks the Wings demand of their centermen.

Who else is out there that can be a solid third center for the Wings?

What is the development status of Ferraro's kid?? We need new blood with golden hands .Unfortunately all the up and comers ripening in Grand rapids don't have 50 goal potential largely

We need to find some diamonds hiding in Europe somewhere

The team next year will be very similar to the team this year. Guys like Homer and Bert were given 2 year contracts last offseason. Partially, I believe, to the expiring CBA after next year. The other reason is Mr. Holland is very good at analyzing "windows" for the team. This is also why I can see Nick Lidstrom coming back for just one more year and that is it. Look at what just happened to them. They played a dead even series against a team that could go on to win the cup, and they were right there with them. I think we will see some turnover. Mursak will certainly be a regular next year, adding some much needed speed and youth. You may also see Kindl take over for Salei. Miller might be gone. Modano will retire. Draper may not be back. I wouldn't be opposed to trading Hudler or Filppula for the right return. Rafalski, Stuart, and Kronwall are all UFA after NEXT year. Rafi won't be back after next year. I wouldn't be surprised to see Kronwall locked up long-term after July 1 this summer. But, the big question is the new CBA and how it will affect the cap. I don't anticipate we see much more than one year deals all across the NHL this summer except for the high end talent.

Next year looks similar to this year with a slight mix of youth brought up from Grand Rapids. That's my prediction.

4 million for a guy who makes Flipper look like a scoring phenom, I think his dream is actually a really bad acid trip.

don't expect many changes

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland likes his team’s chances of getting another shot next season.

“It’s always a major disappointment the day after you’re eliminated, but I don’t think we need to make wholesale changes,” Holland said in a telephone interview Friday. “I like our nucleus. I think Pavel Datsyuk, who is just 32, is right there with Sidney Crosby and a couple other players as one of the best players in the world. Henrik Zetterberg is one of the best two-way players in the game and he’s 30.”

The GM also pointed to Niklas Kronwall and goaltender Jimmy Howard, who at 27 “showed us a lot this season and we’re excited about his future.”

Next year's team is more of the same, I'm afraid. The person that needs to go is none other than KEN HOLLAND. This guy is crippling the Wings with all of his multi-year deals to Bertuzzi, Holmstrom, Rafalski, Draper, etc. This team hasn't had a chance to get better recently because of the dead weight Holland seems to be infatuated with.

This is starting to look more and more like the case. Honestly, people will follow like sheep but what has Holland really done to show he is that special and infallible? He started with an already built team that was winning cups and had Datsyuk and Zetterberg picked by his scouts. He traded for Brad Stuart in 08, what has he really done that this guys post deserves a negative 15?

Ill point out some things Holland has done. He has signed guys like franzen who is now constantly hurt and become complacent to a very long deal, locked up guys like Bertuzzi, Homer etc for an extra year that they didnt really deserve. He has signed guys like Jason Williams as well.

This offseason will be a real test. This team needs a change, even if he is handcuffed a bit, a GM who is as good as a lot of Detroit fans make Holland out to be will find some moves to make.If Lidstrom retires than we'll really see how good he is. I just dont think he has eanred this god like title some give him really.

Any way we can make Franzen a little more like Ryane Clowe?

Ryane Clowe on the wings would be unreal. Detroit needs a player like that. When youre biggest guys like Franzen are your softest it must really take some wind out of the other players sails. Hopefully Sheahan can turn into a top 2 line guy somewhat like this.

As for this offseason, assuming Lidstrom is back, I would sign Shane O'Brien to take Salei or Ericcsons spot. The wings defense needs to become harder to play against. The order of cheaper defenseman I would sign are SOB, Erskine, and than Montador. All are fairly young, play mean and just as capable defensively as Salei.
