If Lids takes a $1M or more pay cut to stay on another year, buying out Hudler's remaining year makes this work:

3.00M Hudler ( C )

1.25M Ericsson ( D )

0.75M Salei ( D )

1.25M Modano ( C )

1.10M Osgood ( G )

1.25M Draper ( C )

$8.60M Cap space cleared

3.25M Wisniewski ( D )

0.85M Kindl ( D )

2.40M Laich ( C )

0.60M Konopka ( C )

0.70M Tatar ( C )

0.80M McCollum ( G )

TOTAL: $8.60M*

Just thought I'd throw something together to add to the talks. :)

*Numbers are rounded off at the ten-thousands, so not 100% exact, but very close.

Sorry, Tatar and McCollum aren't NHL ready, and Konopka would be a 13th forward at best.

The bottom three are mostly fill-ins that make it dollar for dollar, so I have no problem looking elsewhere on them, except that Konopka is apparently a freak on the face-off. Was something like Top 5 in won face-offs at one point late in the season, I believe.

I agree that Tatar and McCollum are still a little ripe for the NHL but like you stated there money could go elsewhere for the same price range player that isn't really counted on.

I do disagree on the buying out Hudler. I think that should only ever be used if there is no other options. I rather trade a player for a late 7th rounder because something is better then nothing... I think Hudler is tradesble and if he isn't a wing next season. That will be the only reason why...

konopka is the defining NEED the wings are after.

centerman faceoff specialist

fists o' plenty

heart

cheap price tag

can skate!

And will hardly play.

We don't need any changes to the bottom 6. We need a second line scorer and possibly a second line center who can play on the third if necessary. It's time the Wings load up as best they can under the Cap.

Honestly, I'm getting nervous because I keep hearing more rumors about Kaberle possibly coming here. Holland wouldn't be that dumb, would he?

You're hearing members on forums wanting Kaberle and presenting them as rumors. Or, at the very best, you're hearing Eklund. Kaberle isn't coming here

"When is it time to make the change to move older people out and move younger people in," Holland asked Bakita and Bentley on WBBL-FM 107.3 Grand Rapids. "You look around the league – lots of teams move in younger people, and by the middle of November, they're looking for old veterans because younger people aren't quite ready for the responsibilities.

"So it's a fine line when to decide that it's time to make change."

Holland said Osgood and Draper have had a tremendous impact on younger players when it comes to displaying the toughness, dedication and team-first attitude that are the hallmarks of the Red Wings organization.

Ken Kal on ESPN 970: Red Wings shouldn't, and probably won't, make any drastic changes

After being eliminated in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second straight year, some Detroit Red Wings fans might be looking for the front office to shake up the team.

Don't count on it, says Red Wings radio play-by-play announcer Ken Kal.

Sure, general manager Ken Holland might be forced into looking for a big move if veteran defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom decides to retire rather than return to the organization for his 20th season in the NHL. Other than that, it's a longshot the Red Wings will make any major moves – it's just not how Detroit does business.

"There might be a few changes," Kal said on ESPN 970's SportsPen. "There probably will be. But you're not going to see a dramatic shift of talent, where they'll trade people or do something crazy where they might regret it. It's not gonna happen.

"You look at what the management staff has done over the years. They've really made only a couple of moves here and there – try to tweak it up – and I think that's what you'll see come the fall when they start playing again."

Kal thinks that levelheaded approach is the right way to go. The core of the team is still intact, and signed for the long haul. Furthermore, Detroit was a hair away from advancing to the conference finals.

"I still believe, with a couple of bounces, the Red Wings could have won that series against the San Jose Sharks," he said. "It was that close. With that said, then you're in the final four, and who knows what might or could have happened."

Say what?

D Lidstrom: UFA 2011. Likely retires by 2012.

D Kronwall: $3m, UFA 2012. Soon to be the team's #1, assuming he re-signs next summer.

D Rafalski: $6m, UFA 2012. Likely retires afterwards.

D Stuart: $3.75m, UFA 2012. Declining play, will possibly no longer be playing at top-four level by 2012-13.

So what long haul is this that they're all signed for?

Sign one or two of Ehrhoff/Pitkanen/Bieksa please.

Not sure what 'long haul' means to Kal. Apparently 2 years or less. Or maybe 'core' just means Pav, Hank and Mule.

Regardless, most of the team is set for next year assuming Nick comes back. I think Kenny will at least explore signing a good defenseman, but don't get your hopes up. We aren't likely to spend $6M on a FA. Ehrhoff and Bieksa could be in high demand, especially if they win a Cup. I think both are very unlikely.

I'd like Pitkanen or Wisniewski, but they might be out of our range. Maybe Markov could be had cheap (though reports are he's already negotiating with Montreal). Babchuk would be decent I think.

There's a lot of good defensemen available, but that also means there's a lot of teams who will be in the market. A big cap raise will mean a lot of teams have a lot of room to spend. Or if it's just a small raise, we won't really have the room to do much.

I think Grant Clitsome is a good ace in the hole. He's not as good as the others I listed, but he's young, skilled offensively, has defensive ability, and can play a physical game. Definitely a good guy to look at if the Ehrhoff/Pitkanen plan fails.

disturbing that I read in a Detroit News articles today that Holland isn't exicted by the available UFA's this year and will likely not pursue anyone until he sees what is left in August and September...

"I've found there are two different (free-agency periods)," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. "From July 1 to July 7, you have the premium guys who are getting premium dollars.

"After that, you have guys who are waiting for deals."

The waiting strategy has actually worked for the Red Wings — Patrick Eaves, Ruslan Salei and Mike Modano were signed as the summer faded into early fall.

Really? This strategy has actually worked with Salei, Eaves and Modano? REALLY? Who the f*** are you trying to kid? Hey, Kenny, are you still competing for the Cup? NO! SO IT DIDN'T ******* WORK! God Damn I am so sick and tired of Holland and his "holier than thou" GM skills! You got bounced two years straight in the second round BY THE SAME TEAM!!!! MAKE SOME ******* CHANGES! But Nooooooooooo! Holland is gonna let ALL the good UFA's walk elsewhere ON THE CHEAP none-the-less, then he will re-sign Fetisov for a comeback tour! Holland knows how to negotiate a contract, BUT HE IS FAR FROM THE BEST GM IN THE LEAGUE! For every example of Holland finding a late round gem, I can give you an example of another team finding someone just as good if not better! And if someone even mentions Ericsson...... :ranting:

From The Detroit News: http://detnews.com/article/20110521/SPORTS0103/105210319/Wings-might-not-find-much-value-in-2011-free-agent-class#ixzz1N1c0mUSg

Would you rather him over pay for free agents every year? I know I dont... Find your leaders within the system for hometown rates and loyalty. Only go fishing in FA when needed hence Rafalski. Just look at some of the recent top player FA contracts and they get quite pricey and don't work on in the long run.

I'm not trying to call you out but we were one win short of the final four with injuries. We faced a3-0 series defiect not because of what players but instead of how they were playing the first couple of games. Holland always ices a contender and we are damn lucky to have that good of a GM contracts like datsyuk and Zerterberg look better every year as the caps go up.

I understand, and I have no doubt that he whatever happens, the Wings will be contenders again, but I do not want to be one win away from being eliminated so early in the playoffs. To sweep Phoenix and then to be on the verge of being swept is not where I want to see this team next season. I know, a bounce here and a bounce there and if Franzen was healthy...

Those contracts do look good, but having extra cap space allows him to give a big UFA some big cash to come here. And really Wisniewski is not that big of a UFA, it's not like what it would cost to lure Weber here, but Wisniewski is better than Salei and Ericsson combined. Unfortunately, if Holland sits on his hands until August, Salei and Ericcson (maybe not even Ericsson) will be the only OKAY choices he has... I just want to see Holland make some changes instead of saying, if this guy was healthy or that guy was healthy. Fact is, Franzen gets injured EVERY season, even in 2008 he missed almost the entire Dallas series if I remember correctly...injuries happen, BUT it happens to Franzen TOO MUCH.

I'm right with you though with the point that we need to spend our cap money...

I wrote a long post in the salary cap thread of kinda what I expect to happen but basically if we have a lot of cap room it needs to spent early otherwise in august there won't be players there to spend the extra cap room on. This usage a season where we have 1-2 million in cap space we have a lot mire and I don't want to wait until the trade deadline and hope something works out. I think holland always goes in to FA saying he won't do much but has surprised us before (hossa) hopefully he does it again...

Amen to that! If he could pull another Hossa miracle that would be awesome! I guess we will see! I laugh at the negatives people hand out to others for being passionate about their hockey team! :hysterical: It's not like I am saying our team sucks and Crosby rules, I am simply screaming for some changes that might make their chances better next year....it;s obvious that this team was just that much short...

I think you're really misinterpreting Holland's philosophy and comments. I think you're so emotionally invested in change that you're assuming the worst; as if Holland said we're bringing the exact same team back.

Like every year, we'll make some tweaks. Wisniewski, though pretty good, would still be a tweak. One that Holland will certainly consider if it looks like a realistic option. Personally I think he'll want too much. After Nick, he's the 2nd highest scoring UFA defenseman available. Montreal has a ton of space, and no one but Subban signed. Wis may not even make free agency. Even if he does all the other good FAs create holes on the teams they played for. Many of those teams will have as much or more money than we will.

What I get from Holland is that we're not going to blow up the team. We're not going to trade guys just for the sake of change, but he's said we're open to making a trade if it makes sense. We can't go out and spend like crazy, but that doesn't mean we won't spend up to the cap. We have every year, we will again this summer. This year we're in better cap shape than the last two years, so we should expect the moves to be a bit more impactful.

The prime guys like Ehrhoff, Bieksa, Wisniewski, Richards, maybe even Laich and Cole, might be out of our range. But we should be able to do better than Salei and Modano.

Adds a pair of wingers who can add more offense to the club in Vrbata and Jokinen. Then you add in Janssen in an enforcer role(or try Rupp from Pittsburgh) and finally add in Wisniewski to pair with Kronwall and put Nick and Raffi on the second line. But, it really doesn't matter because I don't expect Holland to do too much.
