So basically you are saying sign whoever you can so Kindl doesn't have a spot.

I never suggested Meech as a top four defenseman. I suggested him as a top six role. Playing with Lidstrom makes him top four? No it doesn't. Niklas Kronwall was the team's #2 at ES, but his partner was Ruslan Salei - who was the team's #6. Jonathan Ericsson played more at even strength per game than Nicklas Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski, or Salei. For example; Larry is the #1 defenseman. Bob plays 15 minutes with Larry. Fred and John are the #2 and #3 defensemen. They each play 5 minutes with Larry and 15 minutes together. Al and Jim are the third pairing, and they play 18 minutes together, and Bob plays one minute with each of Al and Jim.

What happens? Bob plays almost all of his ice time with Larry. Larry plays more than half of his with Bob. Yet Larry is the #1 defenseman and Bob is the #6.

Ice time is not the only factor. Pairing him with Nick with "a lot of Rafalski's duties" is a pretty important role, and since you didn't specify the expected ice time or who he'd be matching up against or any other limitations on his role...

Again, if he was anything more than a fringe NHLer, it's unlikely he'd have passed through waivers twice.

How many times must it be said by numerous people that Pitkanen is horrible for the price he'll come at?

Under 4 million hes a great deal, especially if its long term. Hes a good puck mover, young, and not horrible defensively.

That's just the thing: he IS horrible defensively. And do you honestly think that at his age, he's going to take a salary decrease in a free-agent market that has very few decent defensemen? He'll get a raise.

No, hes not, from what I've seen of him hes pretty decent, hes not a 1-2 guy, but hes a solid 3-4 with a lot of PP upside.

Well, whatever. In any event, he won't be had for less than $4m. The Hurricanes will probably put up a fight to keep him, and that means $5m+ easily.

Is it possible that Lidstrem'll agree to reduce his salary for 1M in terms to make the team stronger with some changes in weak areas?? Sorry for my english

Can we all at least agree that Wade Belak is a good fit here?

He can play both forward and defense (can Crosby do that?) and has that North American blonde hair and square jaw that fans at the JLA would root for.

Belak = ratings

Oh and he can be coaxed out of retirement to take one last run at the Cup (he's never won one)

So not only did Ericsson make 1.25mil this season in terms of salary, and not only did he turn down a 2mil/yr contract, but he's going to sign for only 900K?

So basically you are saying sign whoever you can so Kindl doesn't have a spot.

Also he is saying "sign whoever because Brad Stuart is clearly not good enough to play in our top four"...even thought Mike Babcock has consistently said he's our best stay at home defenseman, and one of the steadiest in the league.

Is it possible that Lidstrem'll agree to reduce his salary for 1M in terms to make the team stronger with some changes in weak areas?? Sorry for my english

I doubt he'd take a million dollar pay cut. He's taken pay cuts in the past but considering this is his last year (probably) and considering what he means to the organization, I doubt they'd ask him to take anything less than 6 million dollars for one year.

Exactly.

I bet he goes from 6.2 to 6, and that's it and for what he brings to the table, he's worth every penny(and then some) and people suggesting he take less are crazy...

SALARY CAP: $62,200,000; CAP PAYROLL: $62,082,044; BONUSES: $260,000

CAP SPACE (25-man roster): $377,956

There's a 23-man roster cap. Which is fine, because Tatar and Smith will be in Grand Rapids and don't have to pass through waivers. You do seem to be a pretty good GM otherwise, because you've traded Jiri Hudler in a three-way-deal for Milan Lucic AND Sergei Kostitsyn. Truly a magician. Realistically though...

1) Nashville won't just let their leading scorer sign with someone else, especially Detroit. He also will cost more than $2m.

2) Boston won't be trading Lucic. For Hudler or anyone else. You'd be looking at two of Franzen/Filppula/Hudler plus one of Kindl/Smith and maybe a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Something along the lines of "Trading a bunch of good players for one guy" and Holland isn't going to do that for Lucic. He might do it to get Crosby or Ovechkin, but not Lucic.

3) Ehrhoff will be making closer to $5m. Maybe higher.

4) Babchuk will probably be in the $2.5-$3m range.

5) Ericsson won't be staying for less than $2m, and won't be staying if he's not in the top six.

6) Osgood will be making about half that much if he comes back.

So let's drop Lucic, Kostitsyn, put Hudler back, and drop Smith. That cuts the roster by the necessary amount, and raises the available cap space to about $4.46m. Bump Ehrhoff to $5m and Babchuk to $3m. Now we're looking at $2.06m. Cut Ozzie's salary in half. $2.61m. Now bump Ericsson's salary up to $2m, and we're back down to $1.71m in cap space.

So that's not so unrealistic there, except for the question of the cap space. Would Holland be happy with that roster and having that cap space? What if Tatar spends the year in Grand Rapids and Emmerton gets that spot (up to $2.02m) and then you replace Miller and his $1m with a better forward, like Jussi Jokinen?

Lidstrom has banked ~94mil, I think Lidstrom would be ok telling Kenny and Mr. Illitch that he'd play for around 5mil or less.

[stuff]

Spot on. Very little mention of Hudler and no mention of Pitkanen. +1 for you. Plus, I agree with everything you said...I think.

My perfect off-season (not that I think this is what the roster WILL look like, but this is what I am hoping for right now) for what we need, cost, etc, would be:

**LINES ARE JUST SUBJECTIVE AND ARE JUST FOR FORMATTING PURPOSE**

FORWARDS

Jiri Hudler ($2.875m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.800m)

Tomas Holmstrom ($1.875m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Johan Franzen ($3.954m)

Justin Abdelkader ($0.787m) / Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Todd Bertuzzi ($1.937m)

Cody McCormick ($1.000m) / Darren Helm ($0.912m) / Patrick Eaves ($1.300m)

Cory Emmerton ($0.533m)

Jan Mursak ($0.550m)

DEFENSEMEN

Nicklas Lidstrom ($6.200m) / James Wisniewski ($4.500m)

Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m) / Brad Stuart ($3.750m)

Jakub Kindl ($0.883m) / Steve Montador ($1.750m)

Doug Janik ($0.512m)

GOALTENDERS

Jimmy Howard ($2.250m)

Ty Conklin ($0.900m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)

(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)

SALARY CAP: $62,200,000; CAP PAYROLL: $58,054,544; BONUSES: $0

CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $4,145,456

This also leaves some good cap space for re-signing our assets next year as well as any trade deadline moves...
