Jaromir Jagr

As someone who in the past has wanted to get old superstars to fill depth roles on the team (Modano, Hasek) I think Jagr would be a terrible idea. Where would you put him? On the 3rd line? I don't think I would want to hold down one of speedy young players for him. Plus, there's no guarantee he'll be anywhere near the way he was even in 2008. His numbers were declining 3 years ago, I can't imagine what they'd be like now.

I agree, and we have enough seasoned Vets on our team as it is. Its time to get younger skill and have them groomed and mentored ready to receive the torch...

He's lazy defensively, has an awful attitude, has a snotty sense of entitlement, and will come at a hefty price.

Noooo thanks.

people are so silly. I mean, i'm no Jagr fan (its hard to like anyone with an association to a Jofa helmet and a crazy mullet to boot) but to answer the simple question, "would Jaromir Jagr help the Wings?" the simple answer is yes. The detailed answer comes in when you are taking into account his salary, and who else was available with that salary.

There's more to helping the team than just being able to score points. There are numerous other factors that go into play when building an effective roster. This is not NHL 11 or Eastside Hockey Manager. Plus, as others have noted, he won't be as good as he was in 2007, and probably not even as good as he was in 2008.

Please, take back your original video game insults, I don't even own a system. Sure there is more to a team than just being able to score points. But thats only because its unrealistic to be able to field a team of all star goal scorers. Therefore, you have to have role players capable of other things. But when you add a player to a roster who scores you points, it means 2 things. One, he is scoring your team points. Two, while he is scoring, that means the other team isnt.

Now i'm not going to pretend that Ive seen even a single KHL game, and I'm going to assume the same goes for you. All I know is players like him never forget how to score. Would you be against all of the goals Selanne has provided Anaheim this year?

Selanne has a great attitude and works hard. Jagr is a floater with a horrible attitude, and he has a history of being a cancer in the locker room. That's a big difference.

I'm going to take that with a grain of salt as I'm assuming you don't know either one of them personally and have never shared a locker room with them.

You're probably referring to Jagr's issue with the Pens when Lemieux came back from retirement. The controversy of his captain status was created by the media and its fan base because it was they who had discrepancies about who was the teams "official" captain. Neither you nor I have accurate information as to if him and Lemieux ever actually cared about who was capatin on the team themselves, let alonge let it become an issue among them.

You are probably also accusing him as being a floater and someone who doesnt work hard because at times in his career, Jagr was considered a bust in comparison to his salary. When he played with the caps, he struggled to live up to his salary. Well guess what - the wings, or any other team, aren't looking to pay him his salary from 2001. People sometimes aren't smart enough to think it present terms with present conditions. You assume that since Jagr doesn't put up his 106 point total he did in yesteryear, he must be washed up. You fail to consider that he still puts up upper echelon numbers. Or maybe you are just basing this on a gambling issue. Which, if that is your total argument then please let me know because there is obviously no reason to even have this discussion with you.

Quote from wiki:

In April 2009, Jágr publicly stated an interest in returning to the NHL, stating that he really just needed a break from the pressures of an 82 game NHL schedule. Jágr, who claimed to have lost 15 pounds since his last NHL season, and who was "practicing a lot harder than [he] ever did in [his] life"

So sounds to me like he has been practicing and working hard for some time now. I don't think there is much evidence to the contrary. I have a hard time believing that a cancer in a locker room and a player who doesnt work hard can be the 4th fastest player to 1,500 points joining a list that includes Gretzky, Limeux and Dionne while winning multiple stanley cups, multiple Lester Pearson awards, Scoring titles and Hart awards. And I think he won a gold medal and probably got a couple others in his career.

But I digress. Perhaps he is no good......

*god, I don't even care if Jagr even ever comes back to the NHL let alone the Wings. But seriously, sometimes i find it humorous how people just go with status quo and don't think for themselves sometimes.

For all of those saying the team needs to get younger;

Jan Mursak has no more waiver options, so he will definitely be on the team next year as Modano's replacement. We also have Cory Emmerton, who is NHL-ready and also out of options. So he has a good shot at the roster, possibly replacing Drew Miller or Kris Draper.

Now we factor in Jagr. If we assume Draper is returning, Emmerton is probably gone and Jagr takes that spot. If Draper retires, Jagr takes Draper's spot and Emmerton gets the last spot on the roster. Miller would be a constant scratch, while he could get a deal with another team (Buffalo?) to play regularly.

So let's break this down by age. We've taken out Modano, Draper, and Miller and replaced them with Jagr, Mursak, and Emmerton.

Jagr is two years younger than Modano.

Over fourteen forwards, that's an average of 0.1 years younger among forwards if Draper stays and we replace Mo with Jagr; 0.4 if Emmerton replaces Miller. Draper retiring, the Wings keeping Miller and not signing Jagr is 2.5 years younger. But Miller is the 13th forward if he stays in any situation, so the difference in his age against Jagr's doesn't make that much difference. And it's likely that he would come at a cheaper price than the $5m that has been tossed around in this thread. I wouldn't expect Holland to sign him for more than $2m-$3m. How many "young" free agent forwards who bring anything close to Jagr's skill level would sign near that cap hit? My bet is on the number zero.
