Detroit Red Wings 2011-12 Roster

http://prohockeytalk...2011-12-season/

According to the report above, the 2011-12 NHL Salary Cap could increase to $62.2 Million, up $2.8 Million from 2010-11. In another report, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly stated, "The NHL Salary Cap in 2011-12 will be set somewhere between $60.5 Million and $63.5 Million. The actual salary cap will be set at the NHL Draft in late June.

For the sake of this article, let's set the 2011-12 Cap at $62.2 Million.

Now everyone loves to play GM of their team. But some people just see a free agent, and say go get this player. Other people look at the numbers, and try to make silver out of a gridlock. Here's what I would do if I was Mr. Holland:

The Red Wings have 15 players(ten forwards, four defensemen, one goalie) signed next season for $46,808,711. That leaves $15,391,289 under the cap to sign eight players to fill out the 23-man roster.

The Wings top priority in free agency will be Nicklas Lidstrom. I fully expect the Wings captain to come back, seeing as he is a finalist for the Norris Trophy once again, and is just too talented to leave the game now. That, and he doesn't want to go out with consecutive Conference Semifinal losses to San Jose. Nick took a $1.25 Million pay cut last season to allow the Wings to sign another player(Mike Modano). I think he'd take a bit of a pay cut once again for the better of the team. Look for him to accept a one-year, $5.5 Million deal.

With Nick signed, that leaves the Wings $9,891,289 to sign seven players.

Expect Patrick Eaves and Drew Miller to re-up next season by July 1. Eaves will take a deal like last season's one-year, $750,000. Miller will take the same contract next season as last season's one-year, $650,000. They are two players that will provide 20-25 points each and are really effective in their roles on the PK.

With those two players signed, the Wings are left with $8,491,289 and five players to sign.

Now is where the interesting factor comes into play, players in Grand Rapids. I believe there are two players, possibly three, ready to make the jump to the Winged Wheel.

First, Cory Emmerton, a 23-year-old center, has scored 24 goals and 75 points the past two seasons, can come in and projects very well on a line with Darren Helm and Patrick Eaves. His cap hit is a mere $533,000. Second, Brendan Smith, a 6'2" 22-year-old defenseman, who scored 12 goals and 32 points and finished plus-7 in 63 games last season, will be ready to don the Winged Wheel in 2011-12. Smith has a cap hit of $875,000.

After those players are added to the 2011-12 roster, it leaves the Wings with $7,083,289 and three players to sign.

On July 1, Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty will become a restricted free agent. The Kings currently have 16 players signed next season for $47,893,810, leaving them $14,306,190 to sign seven players. If I'm Mr. Holland, I'd sign Drew Doughty to a 10-year, $47.5 Million offer sheet knowing Lidstrom is nearing the end. If the Kings match, it would leave them with $9,556,190 to sign six players, including other impending free agents Michal Handzus, Alexei Ponikarovsky, and Wayne Simmonds, who last season, totaled over $8 Million in cap hit. If the Kings don't match, the Wings would acquire Drew Doughty, one of the game's best young defensemen.

If the Wings signed Drew Doughty, they would have $2,333,289 to sign two players.

Chris Osgood has stated he wants to play again. Now I don't know his health standpoint, but if he can be a capable backup to Jimmy Howard, then expect him to re-up with the Wings on a one-year, $750,000 contract.

If Ozzy returns, that leaves the Wings with $1,583,289 to sign one player.

The last player to sign with the Wings will be Kris Draper, for one reason, to win faceoffs in the playoffs. Sign him to a one-year, $750,000 deal, which completes the Red Wings 23-man roster and leaves them $833,289 under the cap.

Detroit Red Wings 2011-12 Roster

Forwards(14): Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula, Jiri Hudler, Dan Cleary, Todd Bertuzzi, Kris Draper, Tomas Holmstrom, Darren Helm, Justin Abdelkader, Patrick Eaves, Drew Miller, Cory Emmerton

Defensemen(7): Brian Rafalski, Nicklas Lidstrom, Drew Doughty, Brad Stuart, Niklas Kronwall, Brendan Smith, Jakub Kindl

Goalies(2): Jimmy Howard, Chris Osgood

**Jonathan Ericsson tears me apart. I see the guy's potential, but he just hasn't translated it to the ice. It's a business move not to resign him and to be able to acquire Drew Doughty.

Welcome to the forums! There are already two threads on this active on the forum. Also, Doughty isn't coming to Detroit anytime soon. Holland isn't one to give up a bunch of 1st round draft picks in the NU-NHL. And no way Kings let him slip away.

the only thing I would do different is brining Jan Mursak up to the Wings for good. He is now waiver exempt and has far too much potential to lose him for free. I would take Mursak over Miller as my only change.

I also feel the exact same way with Ericsson. I wished he would blossom this season and show us his true form but I dont think the Wings brass are too interested in waiting around for it any longer. If not re-signing Ericsson allows us to land Drew Doughty, then so be it.

So $4.75 mil per year for one of the games best young defensemen? That's not happening. It'd have to more like 10 years, $70 mil. Not to mention, the Kings would gladly let go of Handzus, Ponikarovsky and Simmonds to keep Doughty.

Not doing capgeek stuff but I see it going this way (with some line predictions sprinkled in because your my boy, blue!)

Filppula-Datsyuk-Holmstrom

Franzen-Zetterberg-Cleary

Bertuzzi-Abdelkader-Miller/Hudler (whatever)

Mursak-Helm-Eaves (sexy looking isn't it?)

Lidstrom-Rafalski

Kronwall-UFA

Stuart-Kindl

Howard

UFA

Not sure how Hudler works himself into this lineup whatsoever. Would rather he becomes that salary dump and we use that cap hit to an overall real need.

I wish.

The rest would also be pretty tough to make happen here. Wiz and Bieksa are at the top of my list to be paired with Kronner though.

Valtteri Filppula / Pavel Datsyuk / Patrick Sharp

And yes. Yes, please.

Detroit Red Wings 2011-12 Roster

Forwards(14): Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula, Jiri Hudler, Dan Cleary, Todd Bertuzzi, Kris Draper, Tomas Holmstrom, Darren Helm, Justin Abdelkader, Patrick Eaves, Drew Miller, Cory Emmerton

Defensemen(7): Brian Rafalski, Nicklas Lidstrom, Drew Doughty, Brad Stuart, Niklas Kronwall, Brendan Smith, Jakub Kindl

Goalies(2): Jimmy Howard, Chris Osgood

I hope Mr. Holland has something up his sleeve because the forward strength of this team scares me. I like Bert and Clears but we need goals, Mule better step it up, Huds has not brought his game but if he works hard in the off season he could return to form (its obvious he didnt last year).I love the hard working quartet of Draper, Abby, Eaves and Miller are to redundant for gosh sakes and lets face it Holmer is a pp specialist and nothing more now. I really think we need some more big time scoring help here. Love the "core" we have but need a lot better secondary now imo.

I like the idea of having Doughty for sure as I have him on my top Defensive Line with Jonathan Ericsson on NHL 10 for PS3. I'm not sure if I agree with signing Eaves and Miller. I could see the Wings signing one of them but I personally don't think that they will sign both of them, the same goes for Draper. Drapes is a great faceoff guy as you stated but his age it looked is starting to catch up to him and I can't see signing an older player like him Just for faceoffs. Emmerton being up is one of my orginal ideas for sure and I like that he could be a 3rd or 4th liner next season. I hope Lidstrom does stay for one more season and he is the type of player that would take a pay-cut to bring in another star player. Ozzie is one player I'm very up in the air about. I love Ozzie always have and always will but with his health and all I'd rather see him hang it up and let's go after a different goalie or at least keep MacDonald up for an entire season. Is Smith ready to come up? I know he's spent seasons in Wisconny but isn't this his first season in the AHL with the Griffins? Would the Wings bring him up that quick. I mean I know it hasn't been that quick but they've seemed to keep a lot of players down in the AHL for a lot longer than Smith has been so far. It's a great idea to have Smith up and I fully support it as long as he is prepared and able to make the jump. As much as I hate that the Wings aren't still playing I do really enjoy all the speculation about what next season's team will looke like, I always have.

Agreed. Not sure why people claim we need more goals.

Finished just behind Vancouver with the 2nd most goals-for in the regular season. Scored a lot in the playoffs too. Never hurts to have more but our offense is fine.

After we resign Lidstrom we should follow these steps

Step 1: Get rid of Hudler

Step 2: Call up Mursak

Step 3: Convince Draper, Ozzy and Modano to retire

Step 4: Resign Miller and Eaves

Step 5: Get Rid of Big E

Step 6: Sign a number 5 and 6 d-man that will not lose us games, who will play responsible with the puck and who can contribute a little to offense

Step 7: Sign a solid back-up, or resign Macdonald

you guys can finish the list

Not counting the 2 extra forwards or #7 defense, you're at $57,006,000 on that roster, if I added correctly. I think you're $1M low on Lidstrom and $250,000 low on Eaves. So, let's say there at $58,250,000 with that roster. Still $4M under the cap- supposedly Smith still isn't ready, so I'd say spend it on Ehrhoff/Bieska/Kaberle/Pitkanen/whoever.

It's going to be hard for the Lightning to re-sign him, but Gagne is taking a $2 million paycut? Not so sure about that.

Draper is still getting 1.5?

Where is Mursak?

Forwards? If you say so. Anyway, Smith won't be on the roster. Especially not as the 7th. Derek Meech or Doug Janik at $550k.

*Sign LW Brooks Laich to two year, $5.5MM contract ($2.75MM cap hit).

LA will match whatever offer is thrown at Doughty unless it's like 10 years, $12m per year. Get Pitkanen instead. 27 years old, big, skilled both ways, physical player. Would cost maybe $5m. Lidstrom also will cost probably closer to $5m.

Laich will probably get closer to $3m-$3.5m per year, and if we're signing him I want to see a 3-4 year deal. He's a fairly young, skilled guy but he's in that range where his contract is based on his potential; he'll be a bargain in a year or two, so based on that a two-year deal means he'll make much more in three years, while he would be underpaid on a longer deal.

Bogosian is a decent defenseman, but again I would want to see a 3-4 year deal. That puts him developing to about where Kronwall was last year or the year before based on his supposed potential, meaning we get him down for a contract probably around $4m-$4.5m, maybe 5-7 years.
