Brian Rafalski announces retirement after 11 NHL seasons

Don't shoot the messenger.

Holland has stated he wants to keep E. There are also reports that he turned down two million per year from us...

If Holland is worried about team continuity, which he shouldn't, he might overpay Ericsson.

Now maybe that Bogo trade that was rumored to be on the table could resurface and take care of that for us. Though I doubt Atlanta would want the rights to a UFA for a week in exchange for the rights to an RFA. Even if we through in Hudler and a pick.

Ken HOlland said there were never any talks with ATL. He said it in that interview that someone posted a few days ago.

Yes, lots... and virtually no good free agents to look at. This is a horrible year for it.

Agreed. A replacement would definitely come via trade.

Don't know what you're talking about. This is one of the best FA defense classes since the lockout. Maybe no 'headliner' like Campbell or Bouwmeester to get grossly overpaid, but it's a pretty deep group of good players.

Lids signs for $6M then offer $9M and 3 yrs to Weber (I hope that would be enough (what is the most a player can make?)) If Nashville matches then they would surely lose Suter next off season, if they do not match, then we lose how many first rounders? Anyhow, trade Hudler away and even with the $15M tied up in Weber and Lidstrom, Holland still has roughly $11.5M to finish up the D, (which I would still love to see Wisniewski) and maybe get a solid scoring winger to play with Datsyuk (Tanguay? Jokinen? Dunno) For example purposes, I chose Tanguay and MacDonald as a back up ( I realize I could be off a bit on their salaries.)

FORWARDS

Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Alex Tanguay ($2.500m)

Todd Bertuzzi ($1.937m) / Darren Helm ($0.912m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.800m)

SALARY CAP: $64,500,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,108,711; BONUSES: $0

CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $1,391,289

...again, just guestimating on some salaries, also still not sure how many first rounders we'd lose to sign Weber at $9M...

I realize this lineup doesn't do much to address our lack of grit problems up front, and you would especially NOT want your $9M Weber fighting, but I'd say our D gets mean and tougher for sure....

EDIT: Whoever negged me, please explain why...because Hudler gets traded? Also I said I just used Tanguay as an example...Mods, you should make it so when someone negs someone they have to explain why...

Le sigh. An essential cog that will be missed from the big red machine.

You will be missed Raf...

It sums it up with the first question in the

after winning the cup in 2008.

Wow. This is...unexpected. Must really be banged up to be retiring. This is shaping up to be an interesting offseason for us on the defensive front.

Personally, I really like Bieska in these playoffs and he has been pretty good for a while now. He would be more than a serviceable replacement for Rafalski and if Lids takes less in salary (not necessarily bonuses) than we still have 3 or 4 mil to play with. Dropping Huds seems to be a no-brainer and now we have some interesting possibilities at forward as well - even though the crop is not that lucrative. This is what we need to be contenders again. All eyes will be on Holland and he will have to earn his keep for the first time in a while.

Erhoff and Bieksa. I want.

This would be pretty cool if we could pull it off.

Honestly, these are pretty much the only two UFA defenseman I'd be comfortable signing. If Vancouver is able to resign these guys, alot of the defesneman like Wiz, Kaberle have too many flaws for my taste.

I am just happy we have Holland as our GM. You know he wont change his approach. I cant see our management overpaying someone they arent high on just to replace Rafalski. I can definitely see us staying the course and waiting until the first wave of UFAs are signed. I am very comfortable with having Datsyuk, Z, Franzen, Lidstrom, and Kronwall as our core five. We will have plenty of cap space to add to the core, and we very well could head into the season with cap space allowing us to tweak the roster at the deadline.

Should be an interesting offseason to say the least.

This is the first of many moves that will happen over the next 15 months or so as the Wings try and shed the "old, slow, and soft" label and adjust to the ever changing post-lockout NHL. Depending on what happens this summer will obviously affect what the 2012 off-season which will be, IMO, the most important off-season for the wings since the lockout. Current players that have contracts for the 2012-13 season are:

Datsyuk $6.7(ends 2014)

Zetterberg $6,083,333

Franzen $3,954,545

Filppula $3.0(final year on contract)

Cleary $2.8(final year on contract)

*Helm RFA

*Abdelkader RFA

Kindl $883,333(final year on contract, will be RFA)

Howard $2,250,000

Prospects who have a chance to make 2012-13 roster(in no particular order)

Forwards

Andersson $875,000(final year of contract, will be RFA)

Tatar $840,000(ends 2014 will be RFA)

Emmerton $533,333(ends 2014 will be RFA)

Nyquist $762,500(final year on contract, will be RFA)

Ferraro $715,000(final year on contract, will be RFA)

Mursak $550,000(final year on contract, will be RFA)

Aubry $615,000(final year on contract, will be RFA)

Callahan $558,333(final year on contract, will be RFA)

Jarnkrok Unsigned

Pulkkinen Unsigned

Defense

Smith $875,000(final year of contract, will be RFA)

Pyett Current RFA

Fournier $606,666(final year of contract, will be RFA)

Lashoff $523,888(final year of contract, will be RFA)

Almqvist Unsigned

Goalies

McCollum $816,666(final year of contract, will be RFA)

Pearce Current RFA

Mrazek Unsigned

The bottom line is that the wings have plenty of forwards and "should" be set up front for the next decade with big skilled guys and a dusting of grit along with a few free agents.

On the back end something needs to change. Brendan Smith is the only D prospect currently ranked in the top 12 on RedWingsCentral.

In net the Wings look as thought they have a top 10 goalie in Howard. If McCollum can reach his potential the wings will be set in goal for the next 10-15 years.

What? It's not out of the question... :P

Surprisingly feasible actually, and still quite a bit of flexibility.

However, coming off their first-ever playoff win, steady if slow improvement in attendance, extra revenue from the TV deal...fair chance Nashville would match even that much or more. He's their franchise.

I'm sure they could retool the roster to keep their revenue sharing. Without him, they might lose more than the extra $4.5 million they'd be paying anyway.

If Lidstrom comes back the RFA we should go after as much as i like Weber , is Doughty much better skater then Weber and better offensivly

(6'4 234 LBS)

Weber 16G 32A +7

( 6'1 219LBS)

Doughty 11G 29A +13

Both would be AMAZING but to me i like Doughty just a little more only because i think Doughty has better offensive vision, which with Raffy and possibly Lids retiring we will need

That is fine, but then you force them to pay them $9M and then they could very well lose Suter next off-season. Then again are 4 first rounders worth giving up.....

WEBER FOR 9mil!!!! WOW dunno if you checked on how that Kovalchuck contract hambstrung the Devils but dont see Holland paying that much for a guy that probably wont be that big of an ROI. Dont get me wrong Id love him for 6-7 but 9 is WAY TOO high.

I do like that Pylon isnt on your list ;) thank you for the offseason hope

Four 1st round picks.

That's way too much. Sure-- if Holland knew he'd be picking between 25-30 for the next four years that's peachy. But those could potentially include multiple lottery picks (as crazy as that sounds).

Forget Weber and Doughty. It ain't happenin'.

However, this certainly does make 2 of Kaberle/Bieksa/Babchuk/Wisniewski/Brewer/Ehrhoff a possibility, with space to sign a 3rd, gritty bottom pair guy as well.

Please no to Kaberle or Brewer. Keep in mind Torres is a UFA as well. Not sure the Canucks cap situation, but after they win the cup, it should be harder to retain everyone.

Dunno about you but Torres is a total goon and Id be a bit embarassed to dress a guy like him. He doesnt have an awesome 'stache like Perros but that are brothas from utha muthas if you get my drift.

No it isn't, and in that scenario it doesn't hamstring us at all. The cap may not actually go up by $5 million and I would be hesitant to give up 4 firsts, even for Weber, but it really isn't a bad idea.

Torres > skill than Perros + is more of a checker than a fighter.
