3.75 is over paid lmao wow look at other defensman like finger. Stuarts in his prime and he's a well balanced d man and I think might even get around 4 next year.

I am not talking about other defensemen right now, I know other players are overpaid. It is just my opinion that he is overpaid. I could see Kronwall getting four next year but I think the max I would give Stuart is three.

That's an expensive house.

Not really, especially for Southern California. $2.1M for a 4,500 sf house isn't that much money.

I just back to Toronto after spending a bit of time in California, most of which was spent in Newport Beach. Newport Beach is about 20 minutes south of Manhattan Beach (Stuart's old house). Now, Newport Beach probably isn't a great comparison as it is a pretty rich area, but just for fun....I happened to be looking some real estate adds as I was walking around (not because I'm looking to buy, just out of interest). Anyway, for 800-900 sf, you are looking at about $1.5M. To get something in the 2,500 sf range, you are looking at $3-4M. For 4,500 sf, I'm not sure, but I can only imagine...I didn't spend a ton of time looking at all the adds.

Stuart will easily get 4 in his next contract. Maybe even 4.5. Top 4 dmen are at a premium and are paid as such. Plus Stuart is in his prime right now. 29 other teams would gladly pay stuart 4-4.5 mil a season if he were to become a UFA. Luckily Holland is smart and will pay him a fair contract. For what Stuart does for this team he is more than worth the 3.75 mil he gets. Now you want to talk about not being worth his contract? Look at Hudler.

:hysterical: I love all the Hudler hate! Priceless!

I do agree about Stuart, if everyone remembers he turned down deals for $4M+ to re-sign here. He is worth every bit of the money he makes and is vastly underpaid when it come to comparable players...that being said, he will most likely get a raise next time around, and if Holland throws $4M at Wisniewski (who is worth it IMO) Stuart will definitely get over $4M, just by being one of the players with the most seniority on the team and we all know how Holland rewards that!

Other than by comparing what salaries other players get, how can you come to the conclusion that Stuart is overpaid? A player's value is based on what other teams are willing to pay. With the cap going up, the salaries will only increase even if the talent stays the same.

Hudler's contract is low-end second line forward. That's also where his scoring numbers for this season placed him, even when factoring in lower-scoring players who play better overall games. He makes the same salary next year and, having had his unfortunately long re-adjustment period, he should perform better against a more expensive forward crop. Franzen is in the same situation with regards to current play versus pay, and as such will likely be overpaid for most of his contract unless he keeps up his performance enough to compete with the cap raises.

Eva, this is a thread about Stuart, leave Hudler out of this.

How do you compare Hudler to Franzen? Apples and oranges. Franzen could belch the swedish alphabet for 3 hours and still contribute more to the team than Hudler does.

Stuart is one of the most consistent players on this team. Above average in every aspect of the game he always gives his 100%. We need more players like him on our blue line.

The Lidstrom Effect is crazy, isn't it? Stuart was looking so pathetic in 2010 when he had ________ as his playing partner, and Lidstrom was playing with ________. But you get Stuart to the right of Nick Lidstrom, and he suddenly turns into the 2nd best defenseman on the team. I liked the top two pairings this last playoff run = Lidstrom - Stuart, Kronwall-Salei. They were solid against the Sharks. It was the Rafalski-Ericsson pairing that killed the Wings. If they can fix that up a bit, they'll have a good chance next year.

ya, he should, wherever he ends up playing...

Anyhow, Stuart, very valuable to this team and he deserves and probably will re-sign to end his career as a Detroit Red Wing...

Stuart is so overrated on this board it's sickening.

"Stuart's awesome! Second best defenseman on the team! Having a great year!"

Stuart had his worst season as a Red Wing last year, both offensively and defensively. By spending the entire season with Lidstrom instead of Kronwall, he had a much more capable defensive partner and was much more lax in that area. Unfortunately, he made many bad offensive decisions and could not make up for his defensive shortfall.

Stuart is a worthwhile top four defenseman, but he has declined in performance every season as a Red Wing and he is in his 30s; the Wings having lined up Kronwall, Kindl, Smith, whoever replaces Rafalski, as well as Lidstrom and Ericsson or their replacements; based on that, Stuart is definitely a useful piece, but certainly not a core piece as he'll continue to be the #4 defenseman or lower.

Stuart's value to the Wings is comparable to Holmstrom's. He's a useful player, replaceable, and ultimately it comes down to the fact that he is much better as a special teams specialist than at even strength. Stuart is very good on the PK, but there's a huge gap between that performance and his even strength performance.

I agree with this. He's worth 1-2 million for another year or 2 after next, but the Wings would be dumb to go over that.

I hope Holland is dumb enough to keep Stuart around. All he does is play solid night in and night out. I don't know which Wings games the Stuart bashers are watching. Are you guys serious? 1-2 mil a year for a top 4 dman?

I never said Stuart should be cut down to that kind of money. Just that he's not nearly the defenseman he's made out to be and that he's on the decline. And if he continues to decline at this rate, he might not BE a top-four defenseman when his contract runs out. But he'll get a deal worth around $4m, from the Wings or someone else, because veterans get paid based on what they've done in the past few years. Stuart was a key part of the Wings' 2008 Cup run. So he'll probably get a good contract.

Guess you really don't want him around then, huh? He will get a better offer from EVERY OTHER TEAM at that amount. *sheesh*

That's what happens when other people miss the "spirit" of your post.

I don't think he's as overrated by this board as you might believe. He takes quite a lot of flack for spotty play and is regularly forgotten about because he is not a Swedish puck-moving defenseman. That being said he's an important part of our defense because he's really the only true stay at home, defensive defenseman we have.

Stuart is overrated because he is viewed as strong defensively based on some of his past performances, and LGW members would rather look to lay the blame for a play on a forward, or Ericsson or Kindl, than on a defensively oriented vet like Stuart.

Also, Salei is much more of the classic "stay-at-home" type, especially given that Stuart was letting Lidstrom play the defensive role in the pairing. Lidstrom only scored five more points than Stuart at even strength, despite outscoring him by 42 overall.

Stuart doesn't stand out on his own. Pair him with Ericsson, and you'll have the same nightmare that Rafalski was. Lidstrom, Kronwall, and Salei are the 3 guys on the Wings D that can handle themselves in their own end right now (Salei being a little bit of a stretch). They need to find another one in their organization this year and another one in the offseason UFA market. You can have one bogus guy in your top 6, but the Wings had 2 or 3 last year, and they were exposed against the bigger San Jose team.

Rafalski was fine. He was a great offensive defenseman who contributes a bit defensively. Stuart was supposed to be a shut down guy in his own end, but he was trying to be Rafalski. If Stuart plays the game he should be playing, then that's great. But he has been performing worse and worse over the past three-plus seasons, and that may or may not be tied to the fact that he has been trying to become an "everything" defenseman, which he simply isn't.
