Wonder if this would open the door for Brian Boucher to become Detroit's new backup.

If Osgood retires, yes. If Jimmy gets hurt for any serious length of time (more than a couple of weeks), I'd want a real starter, but there's no reason Boucher wouldn't do well in a 18-22 start season with the Wings. I thought the Sharks used him effectively in that role a couple of years ago.

Boucher is about as good as you'll get for less than what Howard makes, unless you want to get into the trade game. And the chances of picking up a goalie better than Boucher who makes in the $1m range via trade without giving up anything of consequence are slim.

If a door is opened for Boucher then I hope Kenny closes it. Sign Conklin. He's the perfect back-up goalie. Likely get him for 1 mil.

Yep, and Howard will have a season-ending injury in October after being run by Matt Cooke, so Holland will then go out and sign Manny Legace, who had been playing on an AHL contract. He'll trade for Andreas Lilja the day before the next Pens game so that Cooke's season can end, also. And at the deadline, he'll just start trading picks for every player in the league who has played for the Wings while he's been GM. The Wings end up getting guys like Kopecky, Hossa, Leino, Quincey, Lebda, Whitney, Williams, and so on. Most of them end up having to be waived to make room for other guys Holland keeps bringing in, but Holland doesn't really care. After he finishes with all of his trading, he manages to trade coaches and acquire former Wings coaches such as Dave Lewis and Todd McLellan, and then trades himself to Tampa Bay for Steve Yzerman.

Mike Ilitch then appeals to the league, stating that Holland had been under mind control by a fan forum and was not making decisions of his own will. Any trades involving the Wings at the deadline are nullified, Holland is admitted for treatment, and Jim Nill is named acting GM. However, Mike Ilitch didn't know that Nill's minor was in Musical Theatre, and Nill constantly sings songs from "West Side Story" when playing Winnipeg or Phoenix, and is always belting tunes from "Cats" when in Miami or Nashville, while sailing through "Annie" when at Madison Square Garden.

I about died reading that!

I fail to see though where Bryzgalov is getting 6-7 million. The goalie that beat him the last 2 years has a contract that takes effect this year for 2.25, and he pushed for a backdoor sweep in the playoffs. Crawford in Chicago got 2.67 for bailing out his team to get to the playoffs and THEN backstopping them to a near backdoor sweep.

Current cap hit is 4.25. Let's face it. Beyond Brodeur, Thomas, Miller, and Ro8erto 7uongo, I don't see there being another 6-7 Mil goalie.

The thing about goaltenders... They can be worth that much one year and not the other. Consistency is key with a backstopper.

I really think Bryz made a fatal mistake here, because he clearly was worth that much. There was no doubt that he was a top tier goalie. In fact he was better than everyone you listed there at one point not so long ago.

This year however was bad for him as so many goaltenders, led by Timmy Tom, put on clinics in both the regular and post seasons. Then you could tell that he just wanted out of Phoenix in the playoffs and looked like the worst goalie in the league. I still would rather have him than Lou and Brodeur at this point in their careers, even with his bad performance.

Honestly, I think the best goaltenders in the league consist of Pekka, Lou, Tim, Miller, Bryz, and Henrik. Because they have a sting of really great seasons and a ton of skill. Bryz just looks like he doesn't deserve it because he had a couple of horrible games. When you think about it, most of the other guys have as well.

Make no mistake, if he looked like the third best goalie in the league and lost that first round he would have gotten what he wanted.

I just might be surprised and find out he still does, Philly is desperate.

From what I understand about Bryz too... he isn't exactly a very humble guy, and he has a VERY high opinion of himself.

In that recent vote of all the Russian players (won by Datsyuk, incidentally), all the Russian players voted on who they thought was the best Russian in the NHL. Even Ovi voted for Datsyuk, but IIRC Bryzgolov voted for himself lol.

Kinda not surprised he wants 6-7 mil, but with the Cap going up, and some teams desperate for a goalie, I don't think its that much of an overpayment.

I still prefer the Wings system of cheap reliable goalies, but, meh.

There's no doubt Bryz is elite in this league, but nobody is willing to spend that much on a goalie anymore. He's pricing himself out of a job, I have a feeling. Just because of his massive ego. If I'm not mistaken, Miller, Luongo, all those huge contracts were signed a few years back, no? This last year just cemented the trend that you can go far with a mediocre goalie.

I don't know. Carolina gave Ward $6M last summer, but he's a Cup winner with a fantastic playoff record. You have two high-priced Vezina finalists in the finals, either one a potential Conn Smythe winner. On the other hand 6 of the top 11 highest paid goalies (not counting Huet) missed the playoffs, 3 more lost in the first round.

Philly has tried the 'cheap' route with little success. Seems they're willing to spend now. I don't know that Bryz will get $6M+, $5-5.5M seems more likely.

How many playoff series has he won? Like two?

Except when you look at the SCF this year, you have 2 of the 3 Vezina nominees. I agree in years past you just needed a hot goalie, but this year, whether it be an anomaly (except the Canucks have a fantastic team from top to bottom), or goalies are now tiding the turn that you may need an elite goalie to go super deep in the playoffs.

^ lol at that being a neg-worthy post. Come on people...

Whose?

Multiple ways to skin the cat, I reckon.

I completely agree. Usually it comes down to having a hot goalie, and as Wings' fans, we know how a hot goalie with bed mattresses as leg pads can do in the playoffs.
