I don't think Carcillo, Boynton, or Matt Walker are coming back to Philly next year. Did Laperriere officially retire yet?

If Scott Hartnell is available, I say we go after him. Also, Leino may test the free agent market. Philly will want him back, but someone (Toronto?) will throw a nice offer his way.

The Flyers will be looking for some bottom 6 guys this offseason.

Let's add loads more bad penalties for our trashy PK to deal with, that sounds like a great idea.

29 years old. 24 goals, 25 assists, 49 points in 82 games.

What do you suggest, Mr. GM?

Carter definitely not, don't think Hartnell either.. Leino is not re-signed and Carle is probably trader plus the cap goes up. Don't think they'll have to do much more. Versteeg may be moved also.

They were already in pretty bad shape, probably needing to trade someone to re-sign Leino and fill the rest of the roster.

Assuming the cap goes up $3M and they dump Leighton, they'd have about $5M to sign Bryz, Leino, 2-3 more forwards and a defenseman. Then they have Laperriere to figure out. If they LTIR him again they'd gain another $1.16M to fill his place. The league might not let them LTIR him if it's obvious he can't play again. If he's forced to retire they're stuck with his hit.

If they LTIR Lappy, move Versteeg and Carle, get Bryz for his current salary, and Leino at a pretty conservative $2.5 it would give them around $6M to fill 5-7 spots...I think they have to move someone else. Maybe they move Bobrovsky and/or Shelly to save a few bucks. Maybe dump Mesz instead of Carle.

They struck gold with one Fin Wing, maybe they'd be interested in another...Flip, 1st, Kindl, + maybe another pick for Carter? Probably not, but Kenny should at least be making a call.

A player of lesser or equal salary with similar offensive numbers and half or less of the boneheaded penalties/plays.

I'm not thrilled at the prospect of signing Laich at over 4, but I'd rather pay Laich 4.2 or even 4.5 than 4.2 for Fartsmell.

It would be silly to pay Laich 4 mil or more. Someone will, though.

And it would be much, much more silly to have Hartnell at that price.

yes, agree....every year the Cap goes up, so do the amount of overpaying contracts...the days of bargins are over, what you got for $1.5M three years ago is now gonna cost you $4.5M... (I wish my employer would give me raises in those percentages!!!)

Obviously not intended for me, but to throw a name out there: Scottie Upshall.

22 goals and he's a free agent this summer. He will get a raise from his current deal, but he's still going to be more affordable than Hartnell.

I did say Laich, right? I'm fairly sure I did. Other UFA options:

Ryder (Faster, better shot/shoots more, better overall offense when not playing in offensively dead Boston, less penalties, probably cheaper)
Cole (more offense, similar grit, possible injury concerns however, possibly cheaper)
Tanguay (way more offense, maybe cheaper, but older)
Jokinen (similar offense, better shootouts, way less penalties, cheaper)

There are other options as well, but that's probably the best fits.

That's a good point, sir. I'd be happy with us snatching him up, but I bet Toronto is going to make a push for him.

Agree, Upshall would be a very interesting option as well, and way the hell cheaper than Hartnell.

Tanguay is far too inconsistent and injury prone. Plus, Calgary has stated they'd like to keep him. Cole has quite the injury history like you said. Ryder's really expensive. Not saying Hartnell is the best option, it was just something I tossed out there. Jussi Jokinen is interesting, but he will have a lot of offers, and we both know Kenny won't overpay.

Yup, he's got a ton of potential and that physical edge many (including myself) feel we need.

Ryder's going to be cheaper this upcoming UFA, and certainly cheaper than Hartnell. He'd be a great fit imo, speed and shot on the wing.. lord knows we need that in a more consistent combination than Eaves.

Might have to overpay a little for Jokinen, but overpaying Jokinen still wouldn't be as much as Hartnell.

I'm all for adding size and edge with some offense, but not in the form of Hartnell. Adding 140-150 PIM a year, around 100 of those stupid and unnecessary, is not what a team that's had a struggling PK needs to do. Upshall is a much more attractive option. He doesn't have the offense of Hartnell, but it's quite enough for our 3rd line, he'll be way cheaper even if we overpay, and he'll add all the grit with about 80 less PIM in a full year.

Fair enough. Jokinen's the ideal shootout specialist, which wouldn't hurt us at all. I think our main focus will be on defense this summer, though. I don't really foresee us actually doing too much up front. Maybe a bottom 6 forward. I hope i'm wrong, though.

That's another reason for "no to Hartnell". 4.2 in a forward when we need to make some serious D moves? No thanks. If we can shore up our D and then get a forward in the 1.5-3m range, I'd take a good look at that. Fair to say Jokinen and Upshall might fall in there? Maybe escalate the range to 3-3.5 for Ryder or Jokinen, but I think it may be feasible to attain one or the other around or just above 3.
