No, No, NO! Jagr interested in Detroit.

Why does everyone keep saying we need to get younger? Rafalski's gone and Draper might not be back, so outside of Lidstrom where are all these "old" players?

esteef

You could argue that replacing Draps with a 39-yr old is not getting younger, but I agree with you. The wings are no longer an "old" team. Theres a difference between experienced and old.

Dont forget that Salei is being shown the door as well.

Didn't he leave the NHL because the season was to taxing on him? I don't want him anywhere near the Wings locker room.

Not sure if NHL season was too taxing on him but Russians certainly didn't tax his paycheck.

$7M/season in Russia is equivalent to $11M-$14M in NHL (depending on team).

Recchi has heart not sure about Jagr.

He was the only Ranger with heart during his last NHL playoffs. He also had a speach during last years world championship when they lost to Norway and Switzerland and had to beat Canada to stay in the competition, he scored the GWG and then they won the whole tournament beating Russians in the final (with Ovechkin, Malkin, Datsyuk, Kovalchuk, Semin, Fedorov, Gonchar). In the Czech Republic he's perceived as one of the few athletes that gives a s***.

If Jagr went to the Wings, he'd be 2nd or 3rd (Franzen + maybe Cleary are better) best winger on the team. Seriously, if Bertuzzi or Holmstrom can play in the top6, then Jagr is a clear upgrade. This is not even arguable. Plus Jagr would be by far the best player on the 2nd PP unit. For a good cap hit (under 2M) Jagr is a no brainer.

Jagr took an obvious cash grab with Washington and played a few blah seasons there - outside of that I can't really think of anything negative about his character, his competitiveness or his locker room presence. Jagr and Hasek, IMO, take a lot of undeserved flak.

Wings need to win now, while Dats and Zets are still in their primes and Lids is still great. Jagr may not be the answer, but if they have the cap space to grab a potential game changer like him, even for just one year, I am more than ok with losing someone like Emmerton, who might pan out as a bottom line forward.

What have we learned from Modano?

We learned to NOT get your wrist sliced open by a hockey skate, sever some tendons and miss 3 months of the season or else "fans" everywhere will say you were a horrible signing and sucked...

Jesus! Modano played 40 games and had 15 points, what does that prorate out to an 80 games season? 30 points, which is well worth $1M... We all knew he wasn't going to come here and score 50 goals. Hell Hudler played in 73 games and only had 37 points for $2.8M! I'd take Modano's 30 points (prorated) @ $1M again before I'd take Hudler's 37 points @ $2.8M... :puke:

Shouldn't we worry a bit more about defense right now?

We have like 2 guys signed on D.

afaik Jagr doesn't play defense. (see: thread title)

I would take a shot at him if it were for 1 - 1.5 mil but not for anything more than that. Jagr has put up consistently good numbers in the KHL, and I actually think he might be a great fit to play with Datsyuk.

It couldnt be worse than the Modano signing...

Being as worse as the Modano signing is worse enough. No more old dudes "looking for one more shot" please.

Umm Dallas Drake? Reichi? Having guys come in like that helps win the Cup a lot more than it doesnt... Sure, this past year the whole Modano signing did not help, but I think a reason for that was his crazy ass injury that he got. Signing Jagr to a reasonable price could be the difference maker for this Red Wings team. From what I hear, the Wings are looking into signing Wisnuski (however you spell it), and there is NO WAY he gets Rafi's 6 million. Also the cap is projected to go up to 63 or possibly 64 million dollars, therefore Kenny does have some money to spend.

IMO Kenny could afford to sign Wisnuski to help replace Rafi to around 4 million bucks, and use that extra 2 million to sign Jagr, and then they can still sign a good depth Dman. I don't care what anyone says, Jagr has all the talent in the world, but he also has tremendous heart (see the Rangers a couple years ago... he was the ONLY one trying all he could for that team in the playoffs) and I think his skill and his heart and his determination would fit very well into the Wings system. Imagine the lines!

Homer- Datsyuk- Jagr

Bertuzzi- Zetterberg- Franzen

Cleary- Filpulla- Hudler

Eaves- Helm- Abdelkator/ Miller

Lidstrom- Kronwall

Wisnuski- Stuart

Kindl- ?

Howard

Ozzie

That team looks like a very possible 2012 Stanley Cup Champions if you ask me...

the reason for all the jagr hype right now is we don't have a lock down on overseas free agents.

the local free agents cant be approached by GM's until july 1st.

we can chatter all we want about the "local" boys....but until then..its all hearsay.

my two cents:

i never liked jagr....but he would definately be an upgrade over hudler or miller.

if he is "the" only forward acquisition...then nah.

if he replaces huds, miller...then ok.

sign laich, wiz and brewer.

trade hudler/emmerton to phoenix for ekman larsson. (please!)send him to minors and call up to mentor under lids. i watch a lot of coyote games out here in the southwest...and that kid is going to blossom into the next smart/fast/offensive defenseman. dare i say "lids" style or niedermaier.(sp)

its a reach i know....but he is amazingly sharp for a young-un.

but in all likelihood...i think it will be tanguay and laich, wiz and someone cheap(D)

with hudler being traded for picks at the draft.

Let's be honest the Russian national team is a choke fest worse than Miami with the big 3. Also I am pretty sure it was for bronze not gold. Canada didn't have the best people at the tournament as well.

Again the NHL playoffs are not some quick one and done tournament. It is a physical and mental grind along with a much longer, tougher, harder NHL season.

Ok, I'm going to post a lineup and I don't want to get blasted over it. I'm not saying it's possible or that I think it might happen, just how cool it looks. Sort of like if I were to post a picture of a Lamborghini. I know I won't be owning a Lamborghini anytime soon, but they sure are cool to look at. So is this.

FORWARDS

Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.800m)

Jiri Hudler ($2.875m) / Jeff Carter ($5.272m) / Jaromir Jagr ($2.000m)

Johan Franzen ($3.954m) / Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Todd Bertuzzi ($1.937m)

Justin Abdelkader ($0.787m) / Darren Helm ($0.912m) / Patrick Eaves ($1.000m)

Tomas Holmstrom ($1.875m) / Jan Mursak ($0.550m)

DEFENSEMEN

Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m) / James Wisniewski ($4.750m)

Nicklas Lidstrom ($6.000m) / Jonathan Ericsson ($1.500m)

Brad Stuart ($3.750m) / Jakub Kindl ($0.883m)

Doug Janik ($0.512m)

GOALTENDERS

Jimmy Howard ($2.250m) / Brian Boucher ($1.000m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)

(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)

SALARY CAP: $63,500,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,393,938; BONUSES: $0

CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $106,062

Most of it isn't that far-fetched, except that I've put Carter in there instead of Emmerton. I know a trade for Carter would start with Filppula, but it just looks so much cooler with Filppula in there. Beyond that, I've put in Jagr, which is possible given the rumors that his agent called Holland. 2 million probably wouldn't happen, but that's the most I would feel comfortable paying him. I've also added Wisniewski, I think the consensus is that he is the best option available, and Boucher, but you could add any FA backup goalie and it would still look great. Other than that, I've just re-signed our free agents Eaves, Lidstrom, and Ericsson. This is also dependent on the cap going up to 63.5 million, which is the highest estimate I've seen.

First of all, the forward lines are deep as hell. So many different line combos it could make blueadams head explode. We know that Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Cleary is magic on ice, and having so much depth allows us to keep them together full time.

Hudler-Carter-Jagr would be the first combo I'd try for Jagr, you'd have a excellent playmaker in Hudler dishing to a pair of left and right shooting goal scorers, both Jagr and Carter are big guys to make more room for undersized Hudler and there might be a Czech connection to be discovered.

Franzen-Filppula-Bertuzzi is a known quantity as well and would be another case of an excellent playmaker dishing to 2 big, goal scoring wingers. I know the first criticism will be having Filppula and Franzen on the third line, but I don't think of it as a third line. I think of it as a 1A/1B/1C situation. All three of the top lines could be a first on 20 teams in the league. This way you could spread the playing time more evenly, preventing possible injuries and keeping players fresher for the playoffs. Matching up against this team would be a nightmare.

Abdelkader-Helm-Eaves is an incredible energy line, hard hitting and could even pot more than their share of goals.

That would leave Holmstrom out as a power play specialist, reducing wear on him for the playoffs. He and Mursak would be excellent injury fill-ins. You know Franzen is going to go down sooner than later; you could put Mursak on the fourth line and move Abdelkader to the third and not miss a beat. Then you could put Holmstrom on the first line with Z&D when Cleary goes down and know that will work too. This line-up would also improve us greatly in the faceoff circle.

The defense would be ok with the first injury, as you could call up Smith first, but might be a little thin if 2 guys went down. Having Boucher fill in for Howard would be more than ok though, I think he is arguably the best back-up in the league right now.

Another concern is cap space for next year, but we would have 23.648 million (assuming we sign Wisniewski, Ericsson, Eaves and Boucher to multi-year deals this year) plus however much the cap goes up next year to re-sign Kronwall, Stuart, Helm and Abdelkader, plus 4 forwards and 2 defensemen. Lidstrom retires, let Hudler, Jagr, Holmstrom, Bertuzzi, and Janik walk.

i have mixed feelings on signing jagr. i wish he could just come to our training camp and show us that he deserves a spot.

i do think the agent's pitch is pretty funny. almost like an onion article.

'agent feels his aging player would be a great fit for a team who signs aging players.'
