Epic Boooing of Bettman

My apologizes, I thought he did. I know King Henrik missed a game prior and that's why he never had to show up.

And for the third or fourth time, the rule created a year earlier stated if you are named to the ASG and cannot attend (unless you missed at least one game prior to the ASBreak), you must attend the ASG festivities. Call or no call, smoke signal or no smoke signal, the players knew the rules.

That is also incorrect. The rule is you have to play in the game. The amendment was you only had to show up for PR purposes to get out of the "suspension".

Also you would have to miss a game prior to, or after the All Star Break. Just for clarification.

Wow! Thanks for posting that video. It's incredible how much he danced around the questions from the 2:45 mark on. Then again, what's the P.C. thing to say?

Be honest... Say it's a rough job from a PR standpoint representing the wishes of ownership. In order to properly represent them, he has to do a number of things that may be disliked by fans. Of course, he doesn't give that type of answer, so therefore I consider him on par with a cockroach.

Incorrect. The rule is you have to participate in the All Star Games. That includes a bevy of things. There is the game, the skills comp, media functions, etc.

"Well unfortunately, Kelly, we were on a 10-day road trip. ... We played in Phoenix on the Tuesday ... and then the team went home and I stayed in Phoenix with our scouts for scouting meetings. I got a call on Wednesday saying that if our players wanted to go into Montreal we could avoid the suspension. I wasn't comfortable after them being on the road for 10 days ... I would have preferred to have had that conversation with them face to face. So I basically told [NHL VP Colin Campbell] that I wasn't going to make the call to our players."

The Red Wings were aware of the stakes, aware that the players could simply show up to Montreal to avoid suspension, and chose to ignore all of it rather than have Ken Holland make an uncomfortable phone call to Niklas Lidstrom, who had "plans." It turns out the NHL didn't try and bamboozle the Red Wings with some eleventh-hour threat. Ken Holland was aware of the stakes last February and three days before the skills competition.

So why is this even a discussion. Doc, I know you, you are one guy who doesn't fall for conspiracy theories.

Well the fact he got a call last minute proves that was an amendment, not the original ruling. Not sure why you argue that.

Second, Crosby was contacted directly by Bettman and Lidstrom never had any idea about the change until it was brought to him through the media.

He picked and chose, and that's where I take offense. I don't think it is a conspiracy, just that Bettman chose to give one player the heads up and let the cards fall where they may with Lidstrom and Datsyuk. Was it too much to ask for consistency in the situation?

That's all bulls***, and your whole knowledge of lawyers has been shaped by TV and fantasy...

b/s or not, I was referring to the ability to sustain such a humiliation as one of the major requirements to be able to earn 6-digit paychecks being a lawyer.

In other words, a lawyer who has a sense of conscience and honor most likely wont be able to earn such paychecks.

As per my 'whole' knowledge. It's not wise to make such conclusions that fast.

I think we need to remember this was the first time Bettman presented the Cup in a Canadian city in 18 years. Despite being Canadian, but cheering for an American team, I understand how much Canadian hockey fans hate Bettman. Bettman treats Canadian fans, a country that makes 40% of the income for the NHL, like morons.

 for the Canucks fans for the booing. I was laughing when I was watching it, it was great.

Most lawyers coming out of law school nowadays don't make more than $50,000 a year. Actually, most recent grads don't even have jobs. The only ones making 6 figures are those who have great connections and work 60 hours a week.

I should know all this, since I'm one myself and haven't made these six-figures you speak of. At this point, Bettman is as much a lawyer as I am a Blade Runner.

Unfortunately, a very good fiend of mine from Florida is waiting on the bar exam as he just graduated, but all job prospects point to staying as a bartender until something gives.

I would agree with your assessment of where ami got the idea about lawyers and their money -- justified conclusion.

+1 to Barrie as well.

Colin Campbell directly called Holland who choose not to call Lidstrom. I'm guessing Bettman called the Pens GM and the Pens GM said sure, why don't you just call Crosby? Regardless if it's an amendment, all players involved got a call, so to speak. It's not Bettman's fault if Holland even got a second call and still said no. If my boss gave me a call saying I had to work tomorrow, it'd hold just as much water if my co-worker called me and said my boss wanted me to come in tomorrow. Who cares if Bettman or Colin called? I'm not sure why you argue that.

"Hey Colin, can you call the Wings GM while I call the Pens GM?" "Sure Gary" "Holland said his players aren't participating either way, what should I do?" "Give them a day to re-think it and call Kenny back, I'm going to call Crosby and see what he'll be able to do for the ASG." 'Ok Gary"

I just noticed he didn't give the fans a chance to give the Canucks congrats. Gary probably just wanted to get off the ice as fast as he could.

Despite the booing, the best part is 0:53 when Thomas asks where he should leave the trophy.

Edit: Also, where I watched the game it was really loud, were fans chanting "Bettman sucks" between the Conn Smythe and Stanley Cup presentations? Edited by Barrie

I just answered my own question, I found a 5 minute clip, and yes fans were chanting "Bettman Sucks". As much as I don't like the guy, I give him full credit for facing a Canadian crowd.

The way the '09 ASG debacle went down was sickening to me - both the NHL's bias towards Crosby and their willingness to make a last minute exception to the rules for him (the rule stated you had to *play*) and by their almost gleeful scapegoating of two of the most classy players in the NHL and subsequent suspensions of them.

Bettman and Campbell originally tried to present it as the 'exception' was there all along and Crosby was a big hero for jumping on a plane at the last minute to play grab-ass with corporate sponsors - that this somehow proved he was really injured, while Lidstrom and Datsyuk were obviously faking their injuries and refused to attend because they don't give a crap about the fans.

Lidstrom and Datsyuk were both thrown under the bus and led to a lot of articles in papers condemning their character while lauding Crosby, including a memorable article by Theo Fleury calling Lids and Dats "spoiled brats". I also recall a smirking Crosby interview where he went on to say he was really injured, but that 'others' might not be.

The NHL capitulated with and bent the rules specifically for one player (they made sure he could be there and hop on a plane for it) before offering the same exception to other players as an afterthought, irregardless of their situations.

It's blatant favoritism to one player while abhorrent in allowing someone like Lidstrom, one of the classiest players of all-time and whom had never missed a single NHL function in his career to have his character assassinated by the media, largely because of their attempt to present the brand new 'Crosby Clause' as being there all along.

If you feel sorry for this guy you are way too soft. He has done very little that the fans or players agree with and we have every right by paying for games and merchandise to boo as we please. What's going to get the message across more. A bunch of letters that he can easily throw away one at a time or mass public booing/embarrassment? When he threatens cities like Edmonton and Winnipeg who doesn't even have a team yet, I lost the small shred of respect I had left for him. He is a giant ******.

For the 6th time, calls were made to both sides and everyone involved knew. The only difference is, Holland said his players would not attend even after the executive office called a second time to tell them they can get out of suspensions. Crosby, Lidstrom, Datsyuk all had three days to respond to the offer. Datsyuk and Lidstrom were also reminded a second time.

Don't do that.

Also, there was a single call, not from Bettman, and not directly to the players involved.

There were two calls. This is getting old. You think it's a big deal and that this ordeal was unfair, I don't think it was a big deal because Lidas and Datsyuk were going to miss at least one game after the ASG due to their injuries and they were paid for their "suspension" anyways. Agree to disagree, mainly, because I feel dirty for defending the rat face.

You seem to have no concern for the actual motivations, implications and fallout of the event, so I'm fine just disagreeing.

It's ironic the NHL actually learned from this clusterf*ck and quietly allowed Zetterberg to not play in this Year's ASG.

Because I don't believe in conspiracy theories. Plus, Zetterberg wasn't named to the ASG this past season because he sent a text weeks in advance saying he wouldn't be able to play in it, many players did the same.
