Weber and Parise headed to arbitration

Not really surprising in either case.

Both teams want to retain these players, and give themselves as much time as possible to negotiate without having the prospect of an offer sheet coming to the player.

I will be *VERY* surprised if Weber isn't locked up for long term.

Parise will be a interesting case. You have to wonder what New Jersey can offer him, and if Parise really wants to stay in New Jersey.

Wondering if Zach being a Minnesota kid would ever want to play for the Wild. His dad played for the North Stars and Islanders. Don't see him going to Long Island but for Minnesota's case. Maybe there's a maybe down the road. Imagine if WE could somehow get him. Top 6 forward for sure and I think our lines would be insanely great

Here's for pipe dreaming :D

If they can't reach a long term deal, this is risky, because he coule opt for a 1yr arbitration and then be a FA in a season... interesting...

With that said, I'm certain he will be locked up...

NOTE - referring to Weber here

Personally, I would be really upset with Nashville for doing this to me and I would make sure that I got my UFA now. Not saying I wouldn't resign, but I would try to make them pay.

I don't think there's anything to take personally here.

Sources say the Predators did so in order to protect themselves from another NHL team making an offer sheet on Weber. Offer sheets are prohibited on RFAs who are being taken to arbitration.

It is now up to Weber’s agent, Jarrett Bousquet, to elect whether the arbitration is a one-year or two-year term. That decision, though, is not required until 48 hours prior to the arbitration hearing, which can’t happen until after July 20.

In the meantime, Bousquet and the Predators will continue to work towards a long term contract that can be arrived at any time before the arbitration.

They’ve been negotiating for the last two days.

Weber's a pretty smart guy (his agent is probably too) and I'm sure that Nashville said to them, "Hey, we're working on this deal... You want to come back here and we want you back. While we're ironing out the details... Why don't we eliminate some distraction and file for arbitration. Just to keep the flies off."

Whether the deal is done tomorrow, next week, or next month this move by Nashville is simply to protect their interests. His arbitration can't happen until after July 20.

He knows he's getting a raise, Nashville knows he needs a raise, they just have to iron out the numbers so that next year when Rinne and Suter come up as UFAs they know where they (all parties) stand. No reason to get bent out of shape.

My guess is that Nashville was probably very open with Weber long before they filed the arbitration. I'm sure both Weber and Parise knew this was coming. Its just part of the RFA process.

BUT...

I know so many people here would kill for Weber, and that included giving up a s*** ton of draft picks to do. Holland would NEVER put in a worthy enough offer sheet for that reason - so really, this is the BEST news we could hope for in ever obtaining Weber at a young age.

If he has any concerns that Nashville wont be consistent cup contenders, (and cares enough) we will see him sign a 1 year contract. This is a way better scenario.

Guys, I think we need to realize that the pieces arent there on the roster, nor in FA this season to be the top favorite to win the cup. Thats why I'm a proponent of looking at Jagr this year at a 1 year deal, and signing VERY FEW free agents to any long term deals this summer - even though we desperately need dmen.

You think we have a lot of cap space this year?? Look at next year, and see what kind of options we have with current roster players contracts up next year. The FA class should be way better (this is the weakest in some time).

So here's to Weber signing a 1 year contract, and Lidstrom playing at least 2 more years!

Pipedreams Rejoice!!

As I said would happen (though it's not like that was a profound prediction, either)...

Anyhow, I'm pretty sure they'll both get deals worked out before arbitration happens. Arbitration hearings can really sour relationships, and these are both players that are rather important to their respective teams... and also players who seem rather happy with their respective teams.

As I've stated, this is a protection method that's quite easy to predict.

its being reported that Weber has changed agents

Link

Weber did indeed switch agents. We'll have more on this soon

wonder if this means the previous agent and nashville management were far away in their negotiations

If either goes to arbitration they will get a hefty raise and a few years, New Jersey is in cap hell, so they will do anything not to reach that point.

In cases of team-elected arbitration, the contracts only last 1 year. Which would suck epicly for both teams.

Don't think either will actually get to the arbitration.

That is even worse though.. one year I could see Parise getting 5-6 million.

They have about 9-10 million in cap space and need 5 players including Parise.
