Not at all surprised. One can only ram his head into a wall so many times... I just hope the highest (or ONLY) bidder is Quebecor and this whole charade is put to rest. !Vive les Nordiques!

Possibility. Another team in the East could hurt Detroit's chances to move East.

I for one hope it isn't Quebec...

My reason being is right now it looks like with the new realignment we will be heading to the East as the league could possibly run 16 teams in the East and 14 in the west. If the Yotes move to Quebec that could throw a wrench into the works because no way the league does 17 in the east and 13 in the west. I don't know how the league could place both Detroit and Columbus in the east if Phoenix ends up in Quebec.

crash

I was actually listening to someone talk about the Pho issue and they made some really good points. I know that critics of Bettman point at the desert experiment as another one of his blunders - but now I think that he has a legit reason to want to keep hockey there.

I don't want to pretend like I know how TV deals work like the person I was listening obviously did, but it made sense that in order to obtain real and lucrative national cable contract, you have to have an expansive national base. For one reason or another, the market in Glendale is a crucial point for the NHL to sustain a national legitimacy.

I know we just signed a very nice sized contract with VS, but should the Coyotes relocate, I think there will be further implications that are a bit over the casual fans head. Sorry that I'm speaking in generalities, but the jist of what I am saying should make sense if you think about it. Networks don't want to carry your brand if they can't make it appealing across the board. Glendale is a huge chunk of that becase we are already thin on those markets as it is.

I doubt it. I don't think any of the southwestern teams are successful in any sport, are they? I understand Phoenix has a big TV market, but that can't pay the bills apparently.

I get what you are saying - but I think our term of "success" is different than a networks term of "success". Perhaps as well, the potential alone of attracting future ratings is what is at stake.

In any case, as much as the fans hate bettman, he is one hell of a business man. In this regard, I'll tend to give him the benefit of the doubt when he wants to keep Phoenix put.

Well well well, another buyer abandons the Glendale city council. They'll never learn.

All the Vegas talk...not really sure where its coming from, but it seems very unlikely due to Las Vegas's economy being in the toilet...still one of the worst cities in the nation, often topping places like our beloved Detroit in its awfulness. Imagine for a moment...putting an NHL team in a city that for all intents and purposes is worse off economically than Metro Detroit, yet is in a non-hockey market in the middle of the desert. This is after the BoG just saw a team abandon Atlanta for comparatively tiny Winnipeg. I think the Vegas talk is at best, 3 years too early.

This situation is going to get ugly again.

I know it all has been said, but it just seems no one is interested in making hockey work in the desert.

It really could work, but only if they run the team right. Bryz showed us with his effort that the team is not going to build towards any sort of success. Now they are again without a potential owner.

At least I am going to have fun signing "Owned by the NHL" (to the tune of born in the USA) every time they get a bad call go their way.

Why have we never heard Salt Lake City as a possible destination? I would think they would be a nice location given the winter sports angle.

Only potential problem I can see with SLC is that putting a team there would basically cut Colorado's TV market in half. Altitude Sports airs Avs games in 10 states in the rocky mountain region, including Utah & Idaho, so putting another team in that region would potentially hurt a franchise that, while struggling on the ice, appears to be one of the more successful in terms of attendance and TV ratings. Otherwise, I think an NHL team in SLC could do well, I know a lot of my friends in Utah are only Avs fans because they are the closest team, they would probably embrace a local team better than Phoenix would.

Here's my thoughts on the issue. This is becoming very similar to the Montreal Expos fiasco of the early-mid 2000's. The ownership is non-existent. No one wants to keep the team all the good players are leaving etc. They need to move soon. If I had to predict three possible places they'd be 1. Quebec City (Very nice City by the way) 2. Kansas City 3. Vegas or Seattle.

For anyone who wants the RIM guy to buy them. Can I chuck my P.O.S. Blackberry at him???? I HATE HATE HATE IT

I KNOW I've seen a more recent article because I searched for Jerry Bruckheimer wondering why he was at the NHL awards this past week. I remember reading he has a deal in place and they are constructing a new joint arena and basically Buttman has all but assured Jerry that Vegas is next on the radar for an expansion team.

This is an outdated article but just for the sake of "where all this vegas talk is coming from"
