Stamkos Re-Signs With Lightning

I don't know. I remember another team trading a big young superstar to Philly not all that long ago, and it seemed to work out pretty well for them...

I don't recall that big young superstar raising a Cup over his head. But I do remember that other team hoisting up 2 of them. Well, kind of that other team.

As for Stamkos, I guess all he really needs to do is hold up Ovi'$ contract, and Crosby'$ contract, and Malkin'$ contract and ask Yzerman, "Why are they making so much more than you're offering me?" Not that I'm for that argument, but in the grand scheme of things, he is a commodity, not just a person. I think his agent probably understands this, all too well.

Edited to keep on topic.

Second edit: Upon reading your comment with my eyes open, I realized that we were saying the same thing, I think.

With the Lightning signing Ryan Shannon and Stevie Y saying his roster is set...I just don't see Stamkos staying with the bolts. Vinny has a cap hit of $7.7M from 2009-2010 until 2019-2020. Tampa has $15.4M in cap space and $3.2M in Bonuses...there is no way Tampa can meet any offer sheet and not violate the 2005 CBA rules or front load it w/o the NHL looking at it...not a snowballs chance in hell. I say he walks.

They have all of that cap space, that amount of bonuses, and that's for two buyouts, two goalies, eight defensemen, and nine forwards. So they have Stamkos, Purcell, and two other forwards to sign for less than $12.2m. Seems perfectly reasonable.

Although something to consider given Vinny's albatross contract;

He's definitely not worth the money. So if you waive him to buy him out, he almost certainly doesn't get picked up. Buy him out, that's $2,575,757 for the buyout, or 1/3 of his cap hit. Vinny is out about $21m because he'll only get two-thirds of what's left. Now you immediately sign him back on for *drumroll* $21m over nine years. That's a $2,333,333 hit, total hit for Vinny is cut down to $4,909090 from $7,727,273. That's over $2.8m.

I don't see Vinny's being waived and I don't see them tinkering with his contract, all that stuff you mentioned above is a pipe dream (wishful thinking)...their old GM has hand cuffed Stevie Y...no getting around it. Who ever makes and offer sheet Tampa has to match it or risk seeing him walk and Tampa doesn't have the money to match a high dollar contract from someone else. Tampa isn't going to do what the Devils did for Ilya Kovalchuk or anything close to that. I say an offer is being worked out at this moment, it will get done at night while we are asleep, and we'll wake up to see Stamkos with another team in the East.

There is to many odd things going on with what Stevie Y is saying to the media and the resent signings.

As crazy as it sounds just one year into the job, but this could be Yzerman's defining moment as a GM. People might be asking, "How could let go of a 21 year old, 50 goal scorer that is the future of your franchise?" But really, he's trying to build a great all around team, not jam as many superstars on his roster as he can and fill the rest of the roster with scrubs. Ideally, Stamkos re-signs for like $7.5 mil for a few years, but if he wants too much money and his cap hit could impact the ability to fill holes in other areas, I think trading him, while requiring a lot of testicular fortitude, would be the right thing to do.

Sure, Stamkos could be the next great thing in the NHL and Stevie will look like Mike Milbury. Or create an even better team without Stamkos, win a championship and look like a genius.

I just can't believe how important money is to these people. I guess I can say that because I don't have any; but come on. You are a freaking 21 year old millionaire; how much more could you possibly need? Instead of doing the noble thing and signing with a team that you will become the face of; give it all up just to squeeze out 2 million more dollars. Ugh. What money does to people.

I just don't get it. He's what, 21? And he thinks he deserves this big huge contract? He wasn't that impressive his rookie season and he has a lot to prove before getting his BIG payday.

Scoring 23 goals as a rookie is pretty impressive. And then there's that whole scoring 96 in the next two seasons thing.

So are you suggesting he deserves this big payday, more than the 7.4 million cap hit contract that has be reported as turned down by him?

Because I don't.

I think that we have to keep in mind that this is a different market from when players such as Datsyuk or Zetterberg signed their contracts. 7.4 isn't that much for a player of his caliber anymore, although obviously Stevie would like him to take less. I'd certainly be concerned about his poor showing in the playoffs, but based on the market, he's definitely worth at least 7.4.

Having said that, I wouldn't blame Stevie for dealing him either, particularly due to Lecavalier's contract. Just because values above 7.4 are fair doesn't mean that it's what's right for the team.

Lots of misinformation here. First, to buy him out, you have to pay 2/3 of his remaining contract because he's over 26. That means you have to pay him over $43 million immediately as part of the buyout. The cap hit varies from year to year during the length of the contract, but then lasts until 2029. Also, a player bought out is not eligible to sign with the team that just bought him out, so it's a completely impossible situation proposed here.

I'd like to see Stamkos play here, however, Savard would have to retire if he's not making any progress on recovering from his concussion which free's up $7M...few prospects and maybe a draft pick or 2. We have more than the reported $8.7M in cap space...team president Cam Neely and GM Peter Chiarelli could wheel and deal for him while Tampa s***s all over it's self trying to match the offer. To many GM's are scared s***less to pull off such a bold move...that's the message between the lines. Call me crazy but it beats watching players pass right by you with out the GM taking a second look or settling for a Commodore 64 lol ;) Just saying...
