NHLPA investigating Predators

The NHLPA is investigating the Nashville Predators after concerns arose that there was a possibility the team missed the deadline for qualifying offers to a number of their Restricted Free Agents.

If the NHLPA finds enough evidence, they will file a grievance requesting the players in question become UFA's.

The players in question include Sergei Kostitsyn, Cal O'Reilly, Matt Halischuk, Nick Spaling and three minor league players.

Shea Weber not included, so let's get that out of the way right now. He was given a qualifying offer last week so that the Preds could file for Team-Elected Salary Arbitration.

That is one of the reasons Tallon is the Florida GM now, instead of still being in Chicago.

That should get them up to the Cap floor in a hurry. :P While I don't think they'll have to throw big money at any of these guys to keep them, they will have to spend more than they had budgeted for. This could really affect next years signing of free agents. With 4 forwards, 4 defensemen, and 2 goalies to sign, they may have to either dig deep and hope that they can afford a higher payroll, or say goodbye to some free agents that they had planned to keep. Like Suter and Rinne, perhaps. :D

Halischuk and Spaling signed two-year contracts on Thursday, while O'Reilly inked a one-year deal. How the signings affect Friday's hearing remians to be seen.

From cbc dot ca:

Sergei Kostitsyn could be one of the top free agents of next summer with a strong performance next season with the Nashville Predators.

The Predators announced that the restricted free agent had come to terms on a one-year contract worth $2.5 million US.
