July 2nd.

Exactly. If Holland can somehow pull a miracle put of his ass, it's a different story. But given he's already stated he doesn't mind Ericsson in a top pair role indicates to me that the team we have is the team that will start the season.....in other words, we're screwed.

I guarantee you Holland doesn't leave 10m in cap space left unspent. Calm down. It's been one day. Do you really think Holland is going to openly say who he's going after? You don't announce these sort of things to the press.

I haven't seen you around this board here much before tonight, but I like the cut of your jib! You seem to actually have some knowledge and common sense... something that goes bye bye a bit this time of year on here...

All I have to say about Holland and our off-season:

I second this...

However I could totally see him stashing a ton of cap with this UFA class. Besides the next three years we have players due big raises. It is going to take a ton of cap, and maybe he just figures this is how he makes it easier in the future.
"It is a lot easier to be an ******* to words than to people"-xkcd

Tootoo does NOT belong on this team. He is classless and I would rather see the Wings be bad than classless. I feel the same way about Bertuzzi as well, but he at least CAN make the team better. With Tootoo the team becomes worse and in danger of being classless. Would you have liked Claude on the team? Or Roy? No. So why would you be okay with that POS.

I'm sure he'll make a move sometime this summer, but as of right now, this team is worse than the team that iced last season. Not much worse, but worse. Which is strange, because the goal is to get better. I'm not critiquing Holland, because like he said, there just wasn't anything all that good available, and plus there's still months of free agency left. But I don't like his talk that sounds like we're pretty much set.

Nor do I like the idea of Big E replacing Rafalski, which seems to be what is implied in comments made by Holland and Babcock, though neither came out and admitted it.

Also not a good sign that nobody wants Hudler. Makes trades that much harder.

But hey, at least we are guaranteed a goalie signing before the season.

Where do you people get this idea that Holland/Babcock have somehow implied that Ericsson will be replacing Rafalski?!? All they've stated is that more will be expected of him and that he'll need to step up. They've also said that he may or may not be given a top 4 spot. It all comes down to if they can find a suitable top 4 guy who is already established, which Holland has stated before and this evening that is his goal. He's not going to overspend, however, and that makes sense. If we lose a little offense, then we tighten up the defense.

This is not the end of the world, people.

I was chatting with a Hawks fan about this (Yes one of the few smart ones I know in regards to Hockey) he is thinking one of two things A. He has a trade up his sleeve for Doughty or someone. or B. Pizza Boy Mike is hurting though with Little Ceaser's $5.00 Hot n Ready's they should be doing ok considering how many of those my friends and I eat at school he'd be able to live for a few months off that lol!

A. I think there is a trade coming as well
B. I know this was kind of tongue in cheek, but Little Caesers and the Wings are separate business entities and do not affect one another's profit margins... I know it's in jest, but from a business standpoint, the two are not connected... also, the Wings always turn a profit, even maxing at the cap, so financial burden is not the case

Just reading that makes me feel abit better.

Red Wings explored, but mostly stood pat
In addition to signing defenseman Mike Commodore to a one-year, $1 million deal, Holland made a pitch to sign a couple of other players, but the price wasnít right.

"Part of it was money, part was opportunity," Holland said. "(Forwards) look at our lineup and donít want to come here if they canít be a top-six forward, and we donít want to pay them (top-six money) if theyíre bottom six."

WHY??? Why can't he assure a top six forward that he will have a top six spot on the team? Holmstrom(power play specialist) God love em but seriously, he's past it! And he no longer deserves a top six role on this team. Why the hell can't Kenny tell a free agent, hey if you sign with us, we'll move Homer or Bert to a 3rd line, and you'll fit right in on our 1st or 2nd line. WTF? I just don't understand where he is coming from with this bullsh!t.

In theory that might make sense, but I listen and read pretty much everything Ken Holland says to the Detroit media over the years. And he always says what he means and means what he says.

Like when he said not to expect any major changes to the 2009 roster and then a day later Hossa is on it? It's impossible to tell what opportunities will present themselves.

Anybody can say whatever they want at anytime, is he serious? possibly. Its also possible he doesn't want to get too far ahead of himself by saying "expect a huge trade" only to have nothing happen.

Yes, they signed him in 2008 to the 2008-2009 roster. Excellent post, though. It's pretty impressive that so many people are able to find so many ways to ***** about the best GM in professional sports.

Thats not true. I am no Yankees fan but I would vote for Brian Cashman, 6 American League Championships, 4 World Series victories.

I would be really disappointed if this is our team going into next season but something tells me we will acquire another defenseman before the offseason is over

This is a results oriented business you get praise or criticism for what you do today. And when you've retired if you did a great job you get praise for what you did in the past. This is not about 98',02' and 08'. This is about 2011 and what are you doing to win in 2011 and beyond. I don't hate Ken Holland. I like ken Holland and appreciate what he did for the Wings in the past. But going forward he has to continue to do well or I am going to criticize him.

It's crazy, Holmstrom is not a top six forward any longer. He's still good as a power play specialist. But he should not be a top six forward. There is definitely room for a quality top six forward on this team. And in my opinion there is not only room for one, but there is a NEED for one. Ken Holland has to address this. And if he doesn't he is making a huge mistake!

I like how people assume that Holland is just sitting on his ass doing nothing. I mean do people honestly believe that he hasn't actively pursued a lot of the FA's that have signed elsewhere? I mean there are 29 other teams in the mix and most often than not they have a more attractive package that they can offer that the Wings can't (depending on the FA of course).

For example, 1 guy I thought we could go after and possibly overpay a bit was Wisniewsky but obviously the deal the Jackets offered was out of the Wings league so they weren't willing to pay the price.
