Wings_Toledo 233 Report post Posted July 3, 2011 Seems to me like he was included for the sake of getting rid of him. Kind of like what the Wings are trying to do with Hudler. I can't imagine he would play more than a few games next season as a 7th or even 8th D-man, depending on who the Preds sign.

BostonBruinsDan1924 53 Report post Posted July 3, 2011 Preds trade Lombardi, Franson Posted on July 3, 2011 by JOSH COOPER, The TennesseanFacebookTwitterEmailShareDavid Poile sounded upbeat Sunday morning. Earlier, Poile traded forward Matthew Lombardi and defenseman Cody Franson to Toronto for defenseman Brett Lebda and forward Robert Slaney. Lebda played 41 games with the Leafs last season and had four points. Slaney has yet to play a game in the NHL. Lombardi was signed last summer to be Nashville's first-line center, but never played due to a concussion suffered in the second game of the season. Franson played 80 games last year. Poile touted the trade as giving Nashville flexibility to move forward in its offseason goals. He said Lombardi's concussion and the uncertainty about his status made it difficult for the Predators to formulate a plan. "We lived with that last year, and it kind of paralyzed us," Poile said. "That’s why we made the deal. We never like to give up a young player in a homegrown talent like Cody Franson, but you have to give up something to put ourselves in the position to improve, which is what we are committed to do from now until training camp." The move could be considered somewhat of a salary dump. Slaney has one year left on his two-way contract, which pays him $600,000 at the NHL level and $65,000 at the AHL level. Lebda is set to make $1.4 million next season -- the final year of his contract. Lombardi had two years at $3.5 million per season left on his deal, and Franson had one year at $800,000 left on his contract. "We still have to fill in a couple of holes, and I’m committed to doing that. But I really feel good to what we’ve done this point, to change our club and give us more options," Poile said. "Our payroll is going to be more than it was last year."

Nevermind 363 Report post Posted July 3, 2011 That's a very, very good trade for Toronto (for once). Especially if Lombardi's healthy next season. They basically dump Lebda and get a huge upgrade in Franson. Nashville simply got robbed here. Were they too cheap to pay Lombardi on IR or what? And in return, the Preds got Slaney, who looks like he might be a career minor-leaguer. Doesn't make any sense. If good trade are this easy, Kenny should give Poile a call. DSM 114 Report post Posted July 3, 2011 Looks like Poile may just be trying to open up some cap space for a pending trade, UFA or RFA signing.
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted July 3, 2011 Wow, that's a bad deal. Sorry, Nashville. Well.. not really sorry.
55fan 5,133 Report post Posted July 3, 2011 Ok, I don't get this. Slaney has never played in the NHL. Franson is pretty good. I don't get that trade at all. Lebda for a concussed guy, sure. I get that. Except that they guy might be able to play this year, but I guess we take our chances. Bad, bad, bad trade by Nashville.
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted July 3, 2011 (edited) Is Nashville trying to get to the cap floor or something? Lebda's only asset is his overinflated contract. Edited July 3, 2011 by haroldsnepsts
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted July 3, 2011 I swear, the more stupidity I see among people in power (politicians, businessmen, GMs) irritates me all the more that an educated person like myself has such a hard time making money. 1 LidsFan reacted to this

larionov_8 12 Report post Posted July 3, 2011 I guess in order for Burke to take on the extra 2 million difference between Lebda/Lombardi's contract, Poile included Franson in the deal. If this is Franson's contract year that signals they are intent on holding onto Suter next spring as well. One thing I do know for sure: if this trade had been available for the Wings when Lebda played in Detroit, I'd have hoped that Holland would do the same. Franson, a big, right handed player who can put up some points, could have played that role on the right D side for Detroit and -- if you ignore Lombardi's potential dead weight contact -- comes cheaper than Commodore... Doc Holliday 1,888 Report post Posted July 3, 2011 And to think we could have had Franson if we only kept Lebda. Way to do nothing, Holland. 3 Namingway, Finnish Wing and Frozen-Man reacted to this
St. Michael (the Red Wing) 422 Report post Posted July 3, 2011 Pretty sure Nashville wanted to move Franson for a long time and couldn't find any suitors. Why in the world would they want Lebda though is beyond me. Kinda seems like a screwing by Burke.

Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted July 3, 2011 Burke now has been able to trade Kaberle, Blake, Toskala, Hagman, and Lebda away. Say what you want, but he's gotten rid of pretty much all the dead weight (looking at you Komisarek) Great trade for Toronto, if Lombardi can get healthy it's even better.
