This could just be my ignorance and lack of knowledge about the situation but it seems that Kenny has a lot of indecision this offseason. I am in no way saying Kenny is a bad GM, I believe he is one of the best. It just seems like with this whole backup situation and the D-man thing, there has been some indecision on his part that could have cost us with a backup or a top 4 d-man. Please enlighten me so I don't feel and sound so dumb anymore. Thanks LGW

The perceived indecision is actually calculated, responsible decision making. He made pitches to a few free agents to fill the holes, without overpaying in a weak FA class, when plan A didn't work, he went with plans B and C - The same is now happening with the goalies... there is no rush, because teams have already filled their holes and with what's left, any of the goalies he chooses are basically going to be the same thing and fill the same roll.

So far, I think we've had a fantastic off-season and I still see a trade taking place before the season begins.

I agree, and think we're also likely to keep some cash free for the trade deadline.

There are still several decent backup goalie options available. There actually have hardly been any backup goalies signed in this offseason so far.

Holland's decision to not pursue Ehrhoff and Wizniewski was based in pragmatism. Ehrhoff got massively overpaid. Wizniewski does not like Detroit, and he got a giant payday as well.

Next offseason's UFA class will be better. Also, there's no telling what will happen to the cap once the current CBA expires. It's currently out of control; the huge rises in the cap allow every team to keep their UFAs and allow UFAs to get ridiculous contracts, and the bottomfeeders are having trouble remaining competitive at all. The salary cellar in this coming season will be higher than the salary cap in '05-'06. I can't see Bettman and Co allowing it to continue.

When does the current CBA expire? I tend to agree with you on the fact that bottom feeders can't compete because they don't have the money to pay these athletes what they think they deserve.

Realistically, who could the Wings target next offseason? IMO, we have to find someone to take the leadership and skill role that Lids fils now

It expires at the end of the coming season. However, it can be extended through the end of the 2012-2013 season if no agreement is reached by the start of the season.

I have a feeling this CBA will be really easy to accomplish. The players have grievances, the owners have grievances with each other, but overall the issues are very small and the league has stabilized considerably. There will be a scare over it, but they won't miss any time. Which is a good thing, because if the NBA misses the whole season (which I am predicting.) Then the NHL will grow rapidly in popularity around February.

ozzy was convinced to retire....snow realizes that it makes no sense to have a goalie under contract when he prefers to sit around in russia or where ever instead of playing for his team....so he trades him to the wings for anything, because anything is better than nothing....

pure fantasy....but i would like it to come true...guess the wings could live with that pretty well

The issues are not small. The league has stabilized, true, but the salary cap is completely out of control.

You echo my sentiments completely, my friend. I'd rather have a bag of used pucks than Marty Turco. Just the thought of that happening makes me shudder.

I can just see the stats now -

Record at home(JLA):

My dog could probably guard the net better than Turco. Ray Emery is just too much of a gamble. Better the devil we know than the one we don't...that's why I like the idea of Ty Conklin coming back. At least he's a proven commodity.

I think it was going to be Ozzie or Conklin the minute Vokoun and Theodore were signed... I don't think Holland even pursued anyone else, nor should he have with what else is out there, today will be Ozzie's day and Conks signing will be announced by Friday, that's my prediction...

I wish I was more optimistic such as yourself...With ex-MLBPA Don Fehr now at the helm of the NHLPA you'll never know what garbage he's feeding the players.

I do agree there are some issues with the current cap - however it's done the job for the most part, and it can continue to work with a few tweaks - however I get the feeling the players won't see it that way.

Team gets a set cap, no ceiling, no basement, just every team has a set cap they HAVE to spend, then you write a bunch of random salaries equaling the total cap on pieces of paper, throw them into a hat and all your players draw their salary for the year... repeat the process each season

new CBA - done.

When do I get my check?

The Salary Cap isn't out of control. The league revenues are, which is causing the salary cap to rise. That's a good thing though for the league itself.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the league having the cap where it is right now given the fact that league revenues support it being where it is. The problem is teams in poor markets whose owners rightfully don't want to spend $60+ million per year when they know they're going to lose money.

That's what I was thinking, not to mention I was sad when Conks left he put up a great season here. He was near the top of the league in shut outs if I recall. I would love to have him back.

Guess it kinda has to be Conklin now, doesn't it? Veteran guy, knows the Wings, won't expect to start now, etc.

I'm calling it now - that conference call with Osgood tomorrow is to announce he's coming back for one more year...

I would like to see Manny Legace get signed to a two way deal but that is not going to happen. I know he got a lot of the blame for the Edmonton bounce in the first round but he was awesome all year and the D played like garbage in that series in my opinion.

That would be a left field call...I don't see it happening, but then again, stranger things have come to pass.

The reason he got the blame for that series was because he became a head case. Basically showing he had no faith in himself to not only his teammates but the media as well. Legace was great when the pressure wasn't on, the second it was.......
