Wings4Life19

The best deal that NEVER happened

While I am grateful that Datsyuk wasn't traded, I would still think that the best "Deal-That-Never-Happened" for the Red Wings was when Jimmy Devellano was rumored to be in talks to trade Steve Yzerman to Ottawa for Alexi Yashin, Damian Rhodes and the Sens 1st round picks for '97 and '98.

I was expecting that too and before I read the thread I was wondering why this had to be brought up again. I actually didn't know about this Datsyuk-Gomez trade. Funny how their careers have gone to different directions. I wonder if Gomez regrets leaving New Jersey. He get more money now, but back then he was productive and won a Cup.

marian hossa! and...mathieu chouinard!

i vaguely remember holland saying something around that time along the lines of 'if i traded steve yzerman i would be lynched.'

i would certainly have been a part of that mob, no matter who we got in return for him.

can you imagine a mixture of yashin and red wings fans? oh dear lord, he would have taken the term "is lazy and sucks" through the stratosphere.

Holland wasn't GM until 1997.

Not exactly a deal, but I think the best one that never happened is not getting Lafontaine as the #4 pick in 1983, so the Wings had to go with their second choice.

I'll give you this one, as we all know how #19's career turned out... but since you're typically a thoughtful poster, I'm going to assume this was intended to say great things about Yzerman rather than to besmirch Patty Lafontaine. Concussions aside, he was no slouch. I wonder how much better he would've turned out had he been flanked by the fists of Probert, Gallant and crew. :)

(Sorry, Lalalalalala was one of my favorites back in the day)

Yeah, that was in no way intended as a slight on Lafontaine. I was a fan of his during his playing days as well. Who knows how much more he would've done if not for getting brained by Patrick and then again by Leroux.

I'll admit, prior to the 2007 playoffs, I wanted Datsyuk to either step it up in the playoffs or traded. Datsyuk was to easy to push off the puck at one time. In the 2006 offseason Pavs hit the gym, gained 20 lbs of muscle, and the rest they say is history.

I'm sure Gomez would have put up better numbers in Detroit, and probably would have been a crowd favorite.

However, I'm glad the traded didn't happen, Datsyuk hit the gym and turned his career around.

maybe it was devallano..

Probably Bowman, he was GM and coach for a while.

I seem to remember there was a rumour involving Zetterberg being traded to the Leafs a few years back, but I cannot remember for the life of me, who was going to be coming back to the Wings.

Anyone else remember this?

Either way, im glad it never happened...

You guys are all shuddering now, but EVERYONE on this board was complaining about his playoff performance at the time. There were so many threads on who to trade him for. How quickly we forget.

Yup. I wasn't calling for his head or anything, but at the time I really couldn't understand what the deal was. Honestly I still kind of don't. How a guy with so much talent came up dry for those seasons, then finally broke out. I don't know if it was a confidence thing or what, because it definitely went on for too long for it just to be a fluke, or him being snakebit or something. so strange given the beast he is now.
