Wings4Life19 150 Report post Posted August 12, 2011 Would Holland still have a job if this deal went down? Datsyuk to NJ for Scott Gomez
Jedi 1,865 Report post Posted August 12, 2011 While I am grateful that Datsyuk wasn't traded, I would still think that the best "Deal-That-Never-Happened" for the Red Wings was when Jimmy Devellano was rumored to be in talks to trade Steve Yzerman to Ottawa for Alexi Yashin, Damian Rhodes and the Sens 1st round picks for '97 and '98. http://www.the6thsens.com/2009-articles/november/yzerman-to-ottawa.html

I actually didn't know about this Datsyuk-Gomez trade. Funny how their careers have gone to different directions. I wonder if Gomez regrets leaving New Jersey. He get more money now, but back then he was productive and won a Cup.

haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted August 12, 2011 Not exactly a deal, but I think the best one that never happened is not getting Lafontaine as the #4 pick in 1983, so the Wings had to go with their second choice. 1 Hockeymom1960 reacted to this

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted August 12, 2011 The rumor was Yzerman AND Osgood, not just Yzerman. Which would have been a terrible mistake.
Uncle Danny 155 Report post Posted August 12, 2011 (edited) Not exactly a deal, but I think the best one that never happened is not getting Lafontaine as the #4 pick in 1983, so the Wings had to go with their second choice. I'll give you this one, as we all know how #19's career turned out... but since you're typically a thoughtful poster, I'm going to assume this was intended to say great things about Yzerman rather than to besmirch Patty Lafontaine. Concussions aside, he was no slouch. I wonder how much better he would've turned out had he been flanked by the fists of Probert, Gallant and crew. (Sorry, Lalalalalala was one of my favorites back in the day) Edited August 12, 2011 by Uncle Danny

Who knows how much more he would've done if not for getting brained by Patrick and then again by Leroux.
Barrie 900 Report post Posted August 14, 2011 I'll admit, prior to the 2007 playoffs, I wanted Datsyuk to either step it up in the playoffs or traded. Datsyuk was to easy to push off the puck at one time. In the 2006 offseason Pavs hit the gym, gained 20 lbs of muscle, and the rest they say is history. I'm sure Gomez would have put up better numbers in Detroit, and probably would have been a crowd favorite. However, I'm glad the traded didn't happen, Datsyuk hit the gym and turned his career around. maybe it was devallano.. Probably Bowman, he was GM and coach for a while. 1 henrik40 reacted to this
robb himself 143 Report post Posted August 14, 2011 (edited) I seem to remember there was a rumour involving Zetterberg being traded to the Leafs a few years back, but I cannot remember for the life of me, who was going to be coming back to the Wings. Anyone else remember this? Either way, im glad it never happened... Edited August 14, 2011 by robb himself

Seraph 240 Report post Posted August 16, 2011 You guys are all shuddering now, but EVERYONE on this board was complaining about his playoff performance at the time. There were so many threads on who to trade him for. How quickly we forget.

There were so many threads on who to trade him for. How quickly we forget. Yup. I wasn't calling for his head or anything, but at the time I really couldn't understand what the deal was. Honestly I still kind of don't. How a guy with so much talent came up dry for those seasons, then finally broke out. I don't know if it was a confidence thing or what, because it definitely went on for too long for it just to be a fluke, or him being snakebit or something. so strange given the beast he is now.
