GMRwings1983 8,793 Report post Posted August 16, 2011 (edited) That's terrible news. He was one of the best pound for pound fighters in recent memory. The Canucks recently had to deal with Luc Bourdon's death as well. Edit: Forgot he was no longer with the Canucks. WorkingOvertime 536 Report post Posted August 16, 2011 again with tough guys, sad. just completely sad. I would guess drugs or alcohol were involved. His leave earlier this season was not substance abuse related. There have been reports of mental illness. RIP. Rypien was great to watch on the ice.

Guest Crymson Report post Posted August 16, 2011 Suicide is especially tragic because it is completely preventable. Unfortunately, much of society everywhere lacks an appreciation of how real and how dangerous depression can be. 8 Electrophile, seeinred, WizardOfOz30 and 5 others reacted to this

Hank Dats 'N Homer 81 Report post Posted August 16, 2011 Thats terrible news. Death is always a sad thing especially when it comes to a person as young as he was. To hear it is a possible suicide is even worse. As fans of the game and of these players who are payed millions to play a game we all love, its hard for us to understand how these people can be depressed or affected by mental illnesses, but at the end of the day, no matter how much we idolize our athletes, they are just regular people like all of us and arent unbreakable like we all rather believe. Its sad to see something like that if it was infact a suicide. My prayers are with him and his family and i wish his death could have been prevented. Mental illnesses like depression are something i feel we can all relate to at some points in our lives and i wish he could have found the help he needed before it came to this. 3 55fan, WizardOfOz30 and Hockeymom1960 reacted to this

Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted August 16, 2011 (edited) What the hell is it with hockey players passing away as of late? Far too young, so unfortunate and sad. In the last few years we've lost Sergei Zholtok, Dan Snyder, Aelx Cherepanov, Luc Bourdon, Mandi Schwartz, Derek Boogaard, and now Rick Rypien. Namingway 146 Report post Posted August 16, 2011 (edited) Oh wow, I didn't see this coming at all Rypien was actually one of my favorite fighters in the league, it's so sad to see him pass away at such a young age. My condolences to his friends and family. Here's to another enforcer for the pearly gates along with Probie and Boogard. R.I.P. Rick Rypien! ComradeWasabi 109 Report post Posted August 16, 2011 There doesn't seem to be any credence to the suicide rumours: NESN says that News1130 in Vancouver reported it in their story, but there was no source or quote... simply a note at the end of the article with a suicide hotline number. Seems like speculation to me. In any case, RIP, hockey needs to stop losing players this way..

evilmrt 636 Report post Posted August 16, 2011 (edited) This is really sad. I read the initial reports and I assumed it was some kind of alcohol/drug related death, and now I'm hearing it was a suicide. That one really tears me up, I just really feel for the guy's family...what a shame... edit: Winnipeg Free Press: Rypien "hid his dark emotions" Edited August 16, 2011 by evilmrt

Bring Back The Bruise Bros 1,029 Report post Posted August 16, 2011 (edited) Rypien was one of the more solid scrappers in the league, despite his size. 226 penalty minutes in 119 games. I was looking forward to seeing him return to where he started his hockey career. Edited August 16, 2011 by Bring Back The Bruise Bros
