Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted August 19, 2011 per several twitter accounts. A player pushed into retirement because of his contract is becoming more common these days. He certainly could have played a deeper role on a team for a cheaper contract. It also shows you how much value a guy like Draper had to out last someone like Drury who had much more offensive upside.

I think his injuries were the main reason.
Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted August 19, 2011 He was bought out from his contract, so he could've played for cheap. I think his injuries were the main reason. Injuries might have been. I do know he was bought out... I am suggesting that he most likely didn't want to come back for significantly less. I just have a hard time believing that he wasn't offered a contract by some team in the sub million range. Any playoff team who needed depth would have been wise to offer him a fourth line-esk contract. Therefore I assume he turned down at least one contract like that. He might have revived his career after one year, so I assume he let his recent failure drive him out of the league.
Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted August 19, 2011 Didn't see that coming. I expected him to sign a short contract with someone and try to revive his career. He never should have left Buffalo.
P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted August 19, 2011 Leave it to Glen Sather to give $7 millions/year to a player who never scored 70 points in his career.
Guest Crymson Report post Posted August 19, 2011 Well, he won a Cup and a silver medal and he got paid very well in his career. I'd call it a success. 1 Hockeymom1960 reacted to this

dragonballgtz 273 Report post Posted August 19, 2011 He could have had more had he stayed in Buffalo in 2007. Yeah but Buffalo had Briere, Vanek, and Drury to re-sign that year with all of them coming off career years. That was never going to happen unless two out of those three wanted to play for significantly less then what they got.
Bramsy 16 Report post Posted August 19, 2011 shame, Dru could have kept playing and left his mark the way he wanted...... i hope it was indeed injuries and not $$ that leaves him retired
RusDRW 155 Report post Posted August 19, 2011 what a lucky guy... first pumping up his statistics plying with Forsberg then spending one relatively good season with Buffalo and then getting 7 times 5. 1 GMRwings1983 reacted to this

Manoir 70 Report post Posted August 19, 2011 "If I could spend money like the Flyers or Rangers, I'd win the Cup every year"- quote from Glen Sather in the mid 90's when he was GM of the Oilers.
CenterIce 83 Report post Posted August 20, 2011 Injuries might have been. I do know he was bought out... I am suggesting that he most likely didn't want to come back for significantly less. He would be making his buyout money plus the new contract. That would not really be significantly less.
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted August 20, 2011 From everything I've heard, it sounds like injuries. Someone would've picked him up for cheap, especially with his buyout, if he had any gas left in the tank.
