Training Camp Cuts

okay so we are going to camp soon and we hear it year after year about the best players making the team. So say this year that Smith,Tatar and the tryout Brunnstrom really do tear camp up and then have a great exhibition series. Does anyone on here actually believe that they will make moves to get them on the roster and who would the casualties most likely be?

I know that alot of fans agree with having our prospects mature and progress in the A, but should we make exceptions if any truly do stand out. Smith and Tatar would surely be on most other teams roster's already, so are we missing a trick by not promoting these guys sooner.

Im just using Smith annd Tatar as examples for the case, any of the prospects could come in and do really well, i think that Nyquist will be a dark horse this year. We'll wait and see, i just think that the same old excuses will be made to keep the status quo.

IMHO, unless Brunnstrom will go to Grand Rapids, he won't be with the Wings this year.

He will do the tryout and some team will offer him a contract, but he won't crack ours unless he is stellar.

Tatar and Smith will go back to GR because they can, they will get their chance, just not this year.

Out of the 3 you listed, Smith probly has the best shot and only because Commodore can be sent to the minors if needed.

...but Smith would have to out perform one of White, Stuart, Kronwall, or Lidstrom.....1 more season and he'll come up.

If Brunnstrom was awesome, they would have to move someone, likely Hudler to offset the cap hit.

I mentioned this in a previous thread, Chris Conner is another one on this list, he has to clear waivers to go to GR, so if he does great in camp he has to make the team or he might get claimed.

Not unless Brunnstrom is making 8 million dollars next season. They will have to move someone in that case because of roster limits not cap space.

I'd have to agree with you there. I can only really see Smith coming up and only if the Wings can possibly get a rotation going on defense. As for Tatar and Brunnstrom I can maybe see Brunnstrom making the Griffins team and possibly signing a two-way deal but he won't be on the Wings roster on a full-time basis. Wings definelty need to start considering bringing in some young players but it has to be at the right time. I'd rather see Emmerton and Mursak on the Wings than Brunnstrom or Conner as Cory and Jan have been with the team the longest and have payed their dues and developed very well in the AHL and deserve to come up. I'm not really sure much will change with the way the roster is now. I'd expect thing to be as you say Status Quo at least until the Trade Deadline unless something really drastic happens and I hope nothing does. I'd rather the Wings just a good solid season with what they have than make a whole bunch of moves just to shake up the roster. I think the Roster will have enough of a shake-up again next off-season. If what I'd like to see actually happens next season the Wings will have a ton of cap space and be able to bring up players from GR as well as maybe sign a few Big Name Free Agents so that this team can make another solid run at the Cup. Hopefully that will happen this season as well but I think next season will be the better chance. So I'd have to think most things will stay the same at the start of this season but we'll see. Only 21 Days until I go up to TC for the NHL Prospect Tournament and than the Detroit Red Wings Traing Camp!!!!

Maybe if Brunnstrom does well, could we offer him a 2 year deal the 1st year a 2way deal and the 2nd a 1way? This could be the plan as they may see Brunnstrom as a replacement for Homer who has just 1 yr left on his contract. The Conner deal is a strange one to me, i didnt know his was a 1 way deal.

Unfortunately, the best players don't always end up making the NHL rosters. The player contracts play an extremely large role in who ends up on the opening day roster. That doesn't mean the roster is already set, but the selecting of the roster is more "business" than it is watching the guys at training camp and picking the best ones. I've seen and know of several guys that got caught up in a lot of that over the years. Most will get the chance they deserve sooner than later, but there are some, due to the circumstances they are in, that don't get that chance soon enough.

Exactly.... short of Smith playing so above and beyond the other d-men on our roster (to the point where he shows top 2 ability), he will log major minutes in GR and be a call up when needed... Brunnstrom is similar to this, in the fact that he would have to impress so greatly, that he essentially earns a top 6 spot, otherwise, he is expendable, as he's not under contract and we lose Emmerton for nothing to make a roster spot... this also applies to Conner (although in a lesser degree, as he would essentially be a bottom 6 player regardless and is already under contract)

Also, to those that keep suggesting that Brunnstrom could fill a Holmstrom role - never. It's not his style of play and never will be, if anything, he'd be more of a sniper type, at his best...

I think our roster is pretty well set, but competition is always a good thing and these are good problems to have.

If Brunnstrom gets a contract, it'll be two-way. He won't be waiver-vulnerable, AFAIK.

Brunnstrom will only make the team if Emmerton looks like he will never be a Red Wing.

Some people think he is a career AHL-er and this move is nothing more than pitting two such players against each other to see if either responds.

three such players if you include Conner in the equation...

I may be in the minority but I think Brunnstrom has a decent shot at making the team. They obviously see something in him and/or perhaps question Cory's jump to the NHL.

If he is conditioned and motivated...I think he can steal a spot from Emmerton-

Time will tell! It will be cool to watch him at Training Camp and see what he has.

I think you should definately add conner to the equation, but take emmerton out of the equation and replace him with jan.

He'll be vulnerable to waivers, two-way contracts only state your NHL/AHL salary, you still have to pass waivers if you're of the appropriate age/experience.

Yeah, you're right; he's far above the waiver-exempt limit in every category.

i feel bad for smith. he is great in interviews saying 'yeah my goal is to make the team but if i spend another year in grand rapids that's fine, too.' but you know inside he is going mental.

i want to see this kid play really bad, and i hate that he's just getting older in GR as he has proven that he is NHL ready.

on the other hand i want commodore's attitude and toughness in the lineup, and with the *shudders* imminent departure of our captain he will get more ice-time in the future than he would now, and he can log a ton in GR gaining experience and honing his defensive skills. of course this has all been said to death.

Not at all... we're talking about the fight for the 14th spot and that will essentially become a fight between Conner/Brunnstrom(to some extent) and Emmerton... Mursak flat out earned his roster spot with his time up last season and if anything, I think that becomes more of a separate 2 horse race between Miller and Mursak for the 12th spot and playing everyday... I have a strong feeling that Mursak is going to end up playing himself onto the everyday roster by mid-season (if not sooner)

He also has a proven track record, and I like Miller, but I expect big things from Mursak this season... the point I was driving at though, is that the 14th spot is really the only one up for grabs, and that comes down to Emmerton/Conner/Brunnstrom/anyone else that comes into camp as a beast... it would take a LOT of variables (multiple out-of-left-field standouts), an un-expected trade, etc... for Mursak to be pushed for his roster spot and I fully expect him to crack the lineup even with a fully healthy roster with his work ethic and speed...

Mursak will no doubt be on the team.

The fight is between Emmerton, Conner and Brunnstrom for the 14th spot.

As someone who has watched Smith in Grand Rapids last season (I had season tickets last year and went to 34 games), I can tell you that he needs another season in Grand Rapids as a top line defenseman. Now, if he can get partnered with Nick and play first line minutes in Detroit, that would be fine with me as well. The experience of playing with Nick could go a long way to helping his career. What I don't want to see is Smith playing 3rd line minutes in Detroit. He needs a bit more experience. For as gifted as he is, there are people here that would lambaste the guy because he would be a lot like Rafalski. He is a offensive defenseman and can make some mistakes when it comes to pinching in on the boards or trying to make a play.

Even worse, he could look like Lebda out there if he gets called up too soon. He still puts far too much effort into being involved offensively than defensively.

this over ripe thing is a little overrated imo. all it does is make our team older, there is no reason that a player(smith) ken holland has already said is an NHL ready d-man should spen another year in GR just getting older. Hes already older than a lot when they break into the AHL as he came from college.
