Lifelong Wings Fan 6 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 Here's Ek's latest post on his Top 5 Players to earn NHL contracts on try-outs. He talks about how some guys will try-out with the team and sign with another because of that team's depth. However, he seems to think the Wings lack depth and will add Johnson after his try-out. Is he on glue? Here's the link: http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Eklund/Eks-Top-5-Players-Who-May-Make-the-NHL-via-Tryout/1/37906
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 Eklund is a total idiot, but he's made a pretty sweet gig for himself. He gets 1,000 predictions wrong, but then people will point to the one story he broke minutes before it was on TSN and say "see! he does have the inside scoop!" 1 TheDetroitRedWings reacted to this

GSBrooks13 204 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 I am not saying there is no way Johnson could make the Wings, but to say the Wings have a depth issue is kind of redundant. If they had an issue with depth they could have kept Drapes and then spent some of the pile of cash they have left over filling in some more players. I admittedly (and shamefully) follow Eklund on Twitter just because my mind is always blown by his predictions and despite the fact he has about a 1% success rate as soon as he is right he is the first person to blow his own horn and talk about how he called it 3 weeks ago. Lifelong Wings Fan 6 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 Even if he DOES have the inside scoop on some breaking stories, it doesn't excuse this opinion piece. None of his "inside sources" told him about this one. That's straight-up his own opinion that Johnson will make the Wings this year. I hope he's wrong for the 1001st time on this one... mjlegend 155 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 Johnson would be an awesome shot-blocking coach but I don't think he cracks the top 14 unless there are some injuries. A LOT of injuries. "eklund is an idiot" Yep! QFT
archimet 10 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 I'm not trying to defend Eklund, but I don't see what the big deal is. Eklund never writes that the Wings lack depth... he says Johnson still has a lot of game left in him and that other teams considered signing him as a UFA. He also suggests Johnson is the type of player that fits with the Wings... I didn't see even one derogatory statement against the Wings... In my opinion, it's just the opposite. Ecklund is not pointing out some sort of mistake by the Wings... he seems to be saying that Ken Holland did the BEST job finding potential talent among all of the try-outs offered around the league... sputman 1,268 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 I'm not trying to defend Eklund, but I don't see what the big deal is. BURN HIM! well he does say that it would be surprising to him if Ryan were to not make this team out of camp. that would be a lot more than surprising, imo. which player is he going to replace? and no you can't say hudler. sputman 1,268 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 and that is not to mention the fact that out of every team in the league, to him this is the #1 signing most likely to occur. a bold statement that just reeks of eklund. and for a minute, i almost thought this thread was about greg johnson. fixxxer 11 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 I think Eklund's freedom of speech should be taken away and thrown into solitary confinement. That way he's force to read his own crap.
Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 If anything, you should blame his subscribers. Who's more foolish? The fool or the fools who follow him. He's kind of like the John Edward of hockey.

sleepwalker 512 Report post Posted September 6, 2011 If you put all the players names, millions of random salary numbers, different positions, different scenarios, different injuries, etc. into a giant hat and just randomly picked crap out of it, you'd have more accurate hockey predictions than Ecklund makes. It wouldn't surprise me to see Emmerton and Johnson split games. Johnson is one of the top 3 shot blockers and face-off men in the entire league. He would be very helpful against some of the better teams in the league while Cory can play against the Oiler and Panther teams of the league.

Lifelong Wings Fan 6 Report post Posted September 7, 2011 (edited) Let me clarify... I didn't start this topic as a means of breaking the news that Eklund is an idiot. I just thought his latest prediction was worth talking about. There's no way Johnson is going to be signed unless they plan on trading 2 players for draft picks, or 3 players for a top 6 forward. I can't see that being in the works, but what do I know? Holland didn't keep extra cap room so that he could sign Johnson to a contract and sit him in the press box for 3 of every 4 games. Barrie 900 Report post Posted September 7, 2011 However, he seems to think the Wings lack depth and will add Johnson after his try-out. Lack of depth? The Wings are one of the deepest teams in the league! Honestly, I only time I see anything Eklund is when someone posts it here.
Guest 13GoWings40 Report post Posted September 8, 2011 Brunstrom will make the team long before Johnson does. He fits into our system much better than Johnson and would be much better at filling a role in the unfortunate event of a top 6 injury.
