so many countries lost their palyers today...Czech's lost first line from last world cup, where they took gold

we lost some young talented players including Sobchenco andUruchev...they were part of the World Juniors team that won gold medal game against Canadians this year...

from what I have read here (Russia), Salei was on the plane...


btw the plane was charter V.I.P., this was not regularflight...the plane was not old like some of you said, manufactured in1994, believe it or not by aviation standard this is far from old...
also with regard to banned Russian jets, most russian jets are banned to due to higher noise levels as well as higher emission levels...does not mean they can't fly...

Correct on the fact that made in 1993 or 1994 (I've seen both today) not necessarily being considered "old". The "age" of a plane is a function of number of pressurization cycles, just like how a set of springs on a car age with use. Without knowing the history of that particular Yak-24, you can't tell. For example, the B-52 still flies in the USAF, despite the last one being built in 1962, but given proper maintenance this is not a problem.

I wonder if the Wings will have "Rusty" and "Beast" on their helmets or jerseys. Or some form of tribute to them on the uniforms.

I think the NHL should have a small jersey patch or helmet sticker that pays tribute to all the NHL and hockey players lost this summer.

To make this first part Hockey related. Usually I sleep in on Wednesday since I don't have class til 11am but I just a text regarding an unrelated matter. Right when I was about the click send another person a fellow Wings fan called and said "Did you hear about the plane crash carrying that hockey team in Russia." When I checked it my heart sank knowing they were on it.

As a Commercial Aviation enthusiastic, I can say that 1994 is young for a plane. There are A LOT of planes older then that flying the US but the US likely has higher maintenance standards then Russia. But still looking at the YAK-42's accident record 5/7 of them before this one well over 70% of them have been Crew Error or Weather related of some kind. While I won't speculate what happened out of respect for the families I do have a couple of possibilities and terrorism isn't one of them.

the pilot that flew this plane previously and now part of the airline that used this plane, said that plane was not used very much, 7000 hours.

But the question is how many takeoffs/landings did it make? Obviously it is going to have more then something like a Boeing 777.

I simply do not know what to say! I simply cannot believe this news! My heart goes out to the families of the players who have lost their lives!

I was planning on wearing my Suh jersey to Oakland University tomorrow, but its gonna be my Wings jersey now in tribute to the Fallen Wings and players of the Russian Team!!

I truly hope that everyone on this site that has children goes home and hugs them! Life is here one minute and gone the next! Sometimes it takes the loss of life to make you realize your life and your families!

I surely hope the Wings and the NHL do something special for the players that lost their lives today!

Among others, Jan Marek died too. His baby is just a few weeks old. He was not sure he wanted to go to KHL this year, and decided at the very last moment. This is just insane.

Agreed. I am thinking Pilot Error was the case personally but I hope I am horrible wrong.

So tragic  Hubby emailed me at work this morning to tell me - my coworkers couldn't understand why I was sniffling over a plane that went down in Russia w/ former Wings. How do you explain to non hockey and Chicago Black Hawks fans that guys you watch over the years have just died and left new babies and families behind?

The only thing I can compare this to is when one of the planes that hit the Twin Towers had Ace Bailey on it. Ace Bailey was a scout for the LA Kings. This reminds me so much of the sadness on 9/11...yes - hubby & I were driving to our first Red Wings Training Camp in Traverse City that year.

While I agree that it's too early to start trying to sort out the "why", though a crash may be labelled as "pilot error", isn't it safe to say that some aircraft designs are more forgiving of such errors than others?

2 me it looks like they only missed the river by like 50 feet or so, if they were able 2 make a crash landing there, everyone could have made it, which its seems is what they were trying 2 do after they had just gotten in the air.
