puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted September 21, 2011 Mo's a great guy and had a wonderful career. I am sorry his time with the Wings wasn't more productive and satisfying for him, but I know he had a blast being in Detroit, regardless. Best wishes to him and I hope he enjoys whatever pursuits he chooses to follow now.

Guest 13GoWings40 Report post Posted September 21, 2011 Congrats on a great career Mike! It sucks that it never worked out here, but that's how life goes sometimes. Good luck in whatever you decide to do in retirement.

55fan 5,133 Report post Posted September 21, 2011 Had he been healthy here, it could have been his Swan Song. But if "IF"s and "BUT"s were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas. Cheers, Mike. Best of luck in the future.
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted September 21, 2011 Hope he does the one-day contract and 'retires a Dallas Star.' He was the face of the franchise. They sure haven't done much since they didn't re-hire him, have they? I was at the game where he scored his 500th goal (vs. Flyers) in 2007. I thought the roof was going to blow off the Hanger... confetti and streamers fell from the ceiling, etc. It was bedlam. I was also at the game where they recognized Mo in Dallas The ovation speaks for itself, even with him in a Wings uniform. The fans never wanted to see him go. Enjoy, Mike, you earned it. GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted September 21, 2011 Second greatest American hockey player of all time. And whether you people like it or not, he should have retired last season and played his whole career with one franchise. He wasn't sure that he wanted to come back, and the indecision should have been enough for him to say no. 2 dobbles and haroldsnepsts reacted to this
P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted September 21, 2011 To me he was Stars' Yzerman or Sakic, but the difference was that these two players knew when to quit. 1 dobbles reacted to this

Well, those guys didn't sign with another team, if that's what you mean. I could argue that Yzerman should have quit after the lockout. It was great to still have him on the team, but hard to see him get injured so often and be a shell of his former self.

Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted September 22, 2011 NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman released the following statement Wednesday on Mike Modano, the all-time leading American-born scorer who announced his retirement earlier in the day:"We thank Mike for giving National Hockey League fans 21 years of thrills with his speed, his skill, his craftsmanship and his class. Mike also excelled on the international stage, representing the NHL and USA Hockey with great distinction. We congratulate this great representative of the game on an outstanding career and wish him the very best in the future."
Bring Back The Bruise Bros 1,029 Report post Posted September 22, 2011 What a career. Modano is 22nd all-time in points with 1,374. To be honest, I wish he could have retired with Dallas. 1 P. Marlowe reacted to this

He wasn't sure that he wanted to come back, and the indecision should have been enough for him to say no. Interesting. He wasn't better than Chris Chelios. He wasn't better than Mark Howe. He wasn't better than Frank Brimsek. He wasn't better than Pat LaFontaine. I'd probably put him fifth though, just ahead of Beezer and Barrasso. Ryan Miller is quickly moving up that list though. 1 GMRwings1983 reacted to this

His talent level is ahead of all those players for that matter. 1 haroldsnepsts reacted to this

What I find interesting is how you pretend that your "opinions" are facts, it's strange. By the way, no love for Brett Hull? Or do you consider him Canadian and not American? 2 haroldsnepsts and hooon reacted to this

Or do you consider him Canadian and not American? Good point. I guess I've always considered him a Canadian, because he was born there. This is despite the fact that he chose to represent the US, which I have no problem with. So he's not one of the best American born players ever, because he wasn't born in America.
