Why?

The league is pretty clear about factoring injury into doling out punishment. If I'm a goalie and someone intentionally runs me like Lucic did and gives me a concussion, I'm sure not going to sit on that information when they're deciding what to do. It's not like Miller was faking it.

And that's on the Sabres team and medical staff for not catching the concussion or making him sit in the quiet room. Every player wants to play. What was he supposed to do when his neck tightened up and he felt weirdly fatigued?

From your link:

If he was so concerned about his health he wouldn't have waited until then to come out with it as if he's tattling to the media about a concussion to try and get Lucic suspended. Throwing a fit like a baby to the media is pretty much on par with his stick swing, and makes me lose some respect for a goalie I had quite a large amount for. He should be above this type of whining.

I do love how, for concussions, unlike every other injury, it's the players who set a timetable for their own return, but doctors are supposedly expected to do something about it? Something isn't right.

Burke was on the radio this morning and he actually made a couple good points as to why goalies need to be protected that I didn't previously think about. He did mention their equipment being designed to stop pucks, not absorb body contact (which was my main issue).

- Goalies don't have the ability to skate around the entire ice and deliver hits (i.e. payback later in the game)
- Goalies are not trained, do not practice taking contact on a dailing basis like every other player.

Brian didn't like the hit at all, suggested Lucic did not play the puck and took it as an opportunity to run the goalie. That said, he agree with no suspension based on current rules.

It's a little scary when I find myself agreeing with Burke.

Years ago when the league was still discussing the trapezoid rule, Buccigross wrote a column about it. I emailed him saying I thought the simple solution was just to make goalies fair game outside the crease. Don't want them playing the puck? Then don't go far from home. He actually replied and made several good points similar to Burke's.

Goalies basically have anchors strapped to their legs which makes them a very easy target and at an unfair advantage to players. And that if the rule was that they were fair game, guys like Darcy Tucker (again this was a few years ago) would take every opportunity to crush goalies, which usually leads to all out melees on the ice and would be extremely disruptive to the game. Because even though it would be a legal hit, no team would stand for letting their goalie get run like that (except Buffalo, evidently). I have to agree given how many clean hits lead to fights these days.

Lucic absolutely took the opportunity to run Miller. Like I said before, if Shanny wanted to keep more in line with his earlier rulings, I think this warranted a fine.

If he was so concerned about his health he wouldn't have waited until then to come out with it as if he's tattling to the media about a concussion to try and get Lucic suspended. Agree to disagree I guess, because you seem to be taking every piece of information about Miller's injury in the worst light. Waited to come out with it? Tattling to the media?

Where do you get that players are setting a timetable for his return? In every player I can think of that's had a major concussion recently, they talk about how they can't even have a full effort workout until the doctor clears them. Then they need to get cleared again for contact in practice.

Shanny keeps talking about awareness and the responsibility of the hitter, yet Lucic _deliberately_ makes a reckless play leading to the injury of a goaltender and gets nothing. Is it going to take Boston actually killing someone on the ice before they're penalized?
It's a damned joke.

Weak fight.

I'm a Thomas fan so I don't want it to happen, but if the Sabres want retribution, they should take a run at him. See if Shanny sticks with his goalies are fair game policy.

Yeah but make sure it's a star on the Buffalo team. Maybe send Tyler Myers in there.

As I said, earlier, they should have hired some goons for this game.

I was thinking of the final game in "Slapshot", when their opponents brought back all those former legendary goons just to play the Chiefs.
According to my profile, my reputation is excellent. LOL.

Had McCormick and Kaleta been in the lineup, we probably would have seen more fireworks.

They should have signed Bosse and Fritz for this game.

Maybe even brought back Ray and Playfair. ;)

Brad May would've killed Chara, Lucic, and Thomas all at once.

I don't think this is done. We'll probably see more.

May was a good fighter, but don't know how he'd fare against Chara.

The big idiot would have used his size advantage to outreach May and eventually go for the takedown.

I want to see Chara fight against a legit heavy, but it rarely happens, and when it does, Chara bails on the fight real quickly, in order to avoid embarrassment.

I remember he dropped the gloves with Laraque a few years back, and Laraque threw one punch, and Chara "slipped" to the ice.

When he was with Ottawa, he scrapped with Eric Cairns. Threw a few while Cairns' jersey was over his head, but when Cairns threw a punch, Chara went down.

I'd like to see him go with John Scott, Brian McGrattan, Matt Carkner, Colton Orr, and John Erskine. He'd "slip and fall" in every single of those scraps.f****** spot-picker.

Although I will give him credit for smoking David Koci years ago. Then again, I remember Koci more for being a cheap ass, throwing punches after the refs came in, than being a good fighter.

Not sure why anyone would want him going up against a fighter/goon anyway. He's a norris worthy type defensement, you don't want him sitting in the box regularly. The guy is one of if not the strongest guys in the league, but he is not a "fighter." That's why you don't neccessarily see him going up against pure fighters regularly and I wouldn't expect him to or hold anything against him for not. If he gets into a fight with another team's goon, then the other team got what they wanted, they got him off the ice.

As a goalie of 20+ years and much experience doing what Miller did I feel I can put my two cents forward:

I feel if a goalie leaves the net to play the puck in front of him he's fair game, he's essentially a defenseman. But if he's behind the net playing the puck and defenseless then obviously hitting him is a no-no. There were many times I rushed out to try and shoot a puck away and got checked. I was fine with it, I knew there was a chance I'm getting ran over, that's the risk I took. And this is in Midgets, not quite Pro level hockey. I'm thinking twice if I have a 6'4'' 230 lbs monster heading towards me at full speed.

It was dumb on Lucic's part because he made it pretty obvious he was just going for the hit. At least try to sell you "accidently" bumped into him. Or just try to get out of the way, I think he had some time to at least attempt to get out of the way.
