Wings to host NHL Winter Classic within next 2 years

I can't believe people WANT to see a Detroit-Minnesota game. Virtually every Wings fan (in the past) has agreed that Minnesota games are snooze-fests. I'd like to see an Original 6 matchup, but since they refuse to do Canadian teams that limits the options some. I don't see how a Toronto-Detroit game wouldn't sell out the Big House, though.

That was Minnesota in years past. They have clearly made strides in the right direction and I think it would be an exciting game. Plus I would hope they would wear something similar to the North Stars jersey which would be neat to see. I agree though, I would love to see a Wings-Leafs match up but I don't see it happening. If we move east, we will play them plenty soon enough. They aren't worried about selling out. It all has to do with TV ratings.

Last year. But I was thinking a Boston-Detroit WC would be awesome, too. The Winter Classic is basically a showcase for a select few teams anyways. Especially since my money is on a Boston-Detroit Cup final.

last year was caps/pens. so maybe the year before? my memory blows. cant even remember who else played against them. i only remember the important WC. Wings/Hawks when Pavs was doing some nasty s*** out there.

edit: so people arent confused the original Q was when was bostons last WC.

I don't care where it's played I'll be there. As far as the opponet I think Avs, Pens, Bruins, Blues (if we are still in the West). I am a bit bias towards the blues because I'd have some buddies who would make the trip with me to watch the game.

I actually wouldn't mind to see us play the Blues as well. I have a friend who lives down there and is a Blues fan and she would probably come up for the game if that was the case. Oh and I don't know if you have noticed but your signature says Steve Yzerman is the greatest caption. Not captain. lol.

Here is an excerpt from the article as well:

While it would be great, probably not going to have Canadian teams in the Winter Classic.

Yeah, and it probably wont be in Ann Arbor either. When Detroit hosts the Winter Classic, it will be at Comerica Park, as crappy as it would be to view a hockey game there...

...as for an opponent, since we'll be in the Eastern Conference, I would like to see one of our newest rivals, the Devils, Bruins or Islanders.

Wings vs Leafs please! I love the atmosphere during those original six games and if we're lucky that ancient rivalry may just start to grow again.

Based on the NHL's brilliant and super fair selection process we can guess the potential opponents the Wings may face:

Pittsburgh

Philadelphia

NY Rangers

Washington

Boston

Buffalo

Chicago

At the moment Crosby's only been a part of 40% of the Winter Classics so it's probable the next one will be Detroit vs Pittsburgh.

I feel like it needs to be some kind of team with history. The Sharks don't have a whole lot of history. Perhaps we could play the Wild. Detroit is rivals with Minnesota in every other sport just about so I'm sure it would be a good game for the fans and players.

Sharks are the current rival as far as I'm concerned. The Wild = *yawn*

As great a stadium Comerica is, and also Ford Field, I think it has to be in Ann Arbor. Only Hockeytown could have 100,000+ fans at an outdoor game. It'll put to rest Pittsburgh and Chicago falsely claiming they're a better hockey city than Detroit.

id like to see either the wild, avalanche, even the blues simply because the rangers, bruins, penguins have all had their shot at being in the winter classic. i think its time that someone else has their moment. but of course nbc will want ratings so they will choose a team that they feel will give them a boost. <_<

Quick question! Since the old Minnesota North Stars team moved to Dallas, and as we all know Minnesota was granted a new team, if and I say IF Minnesota did play the Wings in the WC, would they even be able to wear the old North Stars jersey since Dallas is really the old North Stars????

And.... I hate Comerica park, I personally think its the worst ballpark in baseball, and you would be sooooo far away from the action it wouldn't even be funny! Granted at the Big House you would be far from the action to, but its the Big House!!

The only reason I would want the WC at Comerica is simply because it would bring serious revenue to Downtown! And...... play Toronto! The electricity that is in the air during a Toronto/Detroit game is insane! I want the Leafs in this one!!
