Why does this seem absolutely stupid to me from the Penguins POV? I agree it seems dumb on the penguins part. Don't know anything about the prospect they got back, but unless he's a top prospect, I don't get it at all. Then again, I hope he's not. Dumb on the penguins part sounds great to me I've read reports that there were some behind the scenes issues in Pittsburgh, specifically regarding Kessel, Malkin and Sullivan. Sounds like both sides wanted to move on, because from a "hockey" perspective, this seems like a bad move. Here is an article from The Score.https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/1791799 The Phil Kessel saga is seemingly never-ending. The Pittsburgh Penguins remain interested in trading Kessel, preferably before free agency begins on July 1, sources told The Athletic's Rob Rossi. This comes less than a month after general manager Jim Rutherford said it was unlikely he would deal the winger. Kessel is signed for three more years with a $6.8-million cap hit and can veto a trade to all but eight teams of his choosing. Sources told Rossi they believe Kessel's eight-team list includes five which the Penguins would never trade him to, along with three others that can't afford his cap hit. He reportedly used his no-trade clause to nix a move to the Minnesota Wild in May for a return that would've been headlined by Jason Zucker. Rossi adds that Pittsburgh's desire to trade Kessel stems from a rift with head coach Mike Sullivan. The 31-year-old wants to play on the club's second line, centered by Evgeni Malkin, but Sullivan occasionally drops Kessel down to the third line when the two aren't clicking. Separating Kessel and Malkin worked marvelously during Pittsburgh's Cup run in 2016 when the winger anchored the "HBK" line with Nick Bonino and Carl Hagelin. Some also think Kessel is partially at fault for Malkin's declining defensive play over the past two seasons. Sources told Rossi that they believe Malkin has picked up some of Kessel's bad defensive habits, including "inconsistent backchecking, inattentiveness regarding own-zone responsibilities, and poor puck management in the neutral zone." Off the ice, Sullivan and other staff believe Kessel would be a better player - and set an example for younger Penguins players - if he showed a "greater commitment to fitness," sources told Rossi. Furthermore, Kessel's status as a regular at a local casino was apparently not viewed as an issue until younger players, including Jake Guentzel, started joining him there on days before games, which other players were told was frowned upon. Kessel hasn't missed a game since the 2009-10 season. He tallied 45 points in 49 playoff games during Pittsburgh's two Stanley Cup triumphs and has enjoyed the best two-year stretch of his career during the last couple of seasons, during which he's registered 174 points in 164 games. Malkin also tweeted some compilation video of Kessel complaining on the bench. Seems like there was some bad blood there. Interesting that Kessel basically forced the trade to Arizona. A team that will probably just be happy to have a 60+ point player (not one Coyote breached 50 pts last year) regardless of his fitness and off ice habits. I have a feeling Kessel is working on his golf game this summer in prep for Arizona. Also worth mentioning that a flight from Phoenix to Vegas is only an hour in the air. Dabura 12,207 Report post Posted June 30, 2019 (edited) Kessel scored 27 goals this season. 25 of those goals were scored against the Wings. He is a big fat phony. "Phony" Phil Kessel they call him. Disgraceful! Edited June 30, 2019 by Dabura

The Coyotes of this past season were so bad at scoring goals it almost beggars belief; they need a Kessel in the worst way. So I have to imagine 'yotes fans are feeling pretty good right now. And, y'know what, good for them. The true believers of that franchise's fan base are some pretty decent masochists folks who've suffered through endless losing and shameless chicanery and deserve a little love from the hockey gods, especially after losing hometown boy Auston Matthews to frking Tronna. All of that being said...it's low-key hilarious to me that the 'yotes are trending up just in time for relocation to the Central Division. That's happening, what, two years from now? So just as Colorado reveals its final form and lays waste to everyone. Oof. The Universe does not like the Coyotes.

It's like wrapping your own Christmas presents, and then trying to be surprised when you see what Santa brought you. I don't even know how it got like this, but UFA day used to be holiday worthy, and worth sitting by the TV or radio all day, just to see what deals went down. It's bad enough that fewer big names hit the market than in years past, but to now let negotiations take place before the 1st, just completely kills the excitement of the day. 1 Wings3:16 reacted to this
amato 3,210 Report post Posted July 1, 2019 Quote Amid reports that Panarin is likely to sign Monday with the New York Islanders, the Blue Jackets have put a massive offer on the table with agent Paul Theofanous, believed to be eight years and $96 million, an average annual value of $12 million per season, according to league sources. The deal could be worth as much as $100 million or $12.5 million per season. https://theathletic.com/1056150/2019/06/30/blue-jackets-make-a-massive-late-night-offer-in-an-attempt-to-keep-artemi-panarin/ One last BIG push by CBJ. also this.
