You shouldn't trade a player when his stock is down, and right now, Athanasiou's stock is definitely down. Production will always effect a players perceived value. The fact that he only has 3 assists, and is a team worst (and league worst) -12, through 11 games will definitely impact his trade value. The best thing to do, like mentioned, is to wait it out and hope he starts capitalizing on his chances. Assuming he does, he would be a pretty significant trade chip later in the season. If he has a bad season this year we might be able to lock him down on a reasonable contract for a few years. While there are definitely deficiencies to his game, he's still got the ability to change games and put up big numbers in small minutes. Say you can re-sign him after a bad year at 2-3 years at 4.5-5 million to ride out his RFA years. Pulju wants top 6 minutes and a change of scenery. We are one of the few teams that can offer that immediately. Yzerman is also in Finland with these two right now, desperately needs to stop the Red Wings free fall, and still owes us our monthly trade for Nov. Word from Edmonton fans is that Holland has set a very high asking price. We are in a unique position to offer him former players of his that he likes. Athanasiou + prospect or pick? I would think, even with Athanasiou's horrid start, he should have more, or at least similar to Puljujarvi, shouldn't he? A player that has proven capable of scoring 30+ goals in the NHL vs a player that was once a top prospect, but has since done jack s*** at the NHL level...
