Win rate when Wings receive a FM

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I was sitting around the other day wondering if there was any correlation between fighting majors and winning games. After some thought I decided to take a look at the numbers.

Below are the season by season breakdown accompanied by the total # of fighting majors, and the % of games won when the Wings had a FM.

It's nothing crazy, but it seems as though - for the most part at least, that we have a decent winning percentage in games in which a Wing drops the mitts. The exception of course being 09-10.

The numbers in the parenthesis is the total % of games won when the Wings incurred a FM

*I did not include pre-season games, I stuck to regular season and playoff games only.

2006-07: 12 FM -- (67% win rate)

2007-08: 22 FM -- (55% win rate)

2008-09: 16 FM -- (69% win rate)

2009-10: 21 FM -- (48% win rate)

2010-11: 14 FM -- (71% win rate)

2011-12: 04 FM -- (100% win rate)

The actual win rate has nothing to do with who won the actual fight, rather, how the team fared in the contest.

I am not trolling, I am only posting this because I spent 2 hours doing it (slow day at work) and I didn't want it to go to waste. So take this as nothing more then food for thought. I am not advocating for an "enforcer" or anything like that. I love the team we have and if I could pick one part to add, it would be a top 6 sniper.

A few details missing before coming to any sort of conclusion:

a) how many fighting majors in the respective years

b) how did the win % with a fight compare to win% without (which i believe is fairly even)

from the win% there, I would say that it's not a significant factor in the Wings play.

With win rates from 48 per cent to 100 in a three year span, it's fair to say there's no real correlation to a Wings fight and a Wings win in recent years.

It was worth a good look, though. Sometimes the numbers tell us what our eyes refuse to believe.

I don't think anyone here has seriously advocated enforcers because it means we'll win that game.

You have to remember that the Wings are last in FM every year. Doesn't give us a big sample to pull statistics from.

With that said, I still think we should get McGrattan. I'd give back my kids' Christmas presents for him. :D

I think that is key here, the sample size. We've had what, four fights this year? Even if we fought every game, it's hard to say that the fight was indicative of the win. Additionally, it would be much easier to win the four games they had FM in than to win all 82 there were FM in.

2010-11: 14 FM -- (71% win rate)

2011-12: 04 FM -- (100% win rate)

Here are the overall win percentages for those years:

2006-2007 -- 61% win rate

2007-2008 -- 66% win rate

2008-2009 -- 62% win rate

2009-2010 -- 54% win rate

2010-2011 -- 57% win rate

Throwing out this year since the sample size is only 4 games, that's a pretty weak correlation. The only case you could make would be 2010, but even then the difference isn't *that* big. In fact, the two years that we had the most fights (2007 and 2009), we did worse in games where we fought.

So, to add another variable to this, how many of these fights took place when the game was already decided? For example, a blowout, or down by 3 late in the 3rd. Basically, frustration fights. Fights that have no bearing on the game whatsoever. I'm thinking that throwing those out, changes the numbers quite a bit.
