But why is offense only an issue on the road?

What they need is to figure out why they're doing so much worse on the road.

Are the seats on their flight not comfy enough? Are they jetlagged? Do they forget important items and gear back in Detroit?

Hawks were the better team tonight. It kinda sucks though that some awfully weak calls had to go and influence the game so much, especially the penalty shot, but still, if one team deserved to win tonight it was Chicago. You can ask why did they get 5 PPs and we only got 1. And while I think we got some bad penalty calls against us while they missed some on them, the main reason is they outworked us.

Every loss means people will start saying we need to trade this guy or acquire that. But when a team only has issues on the road something is up that isn't necessarily concerning the squad.

teams play better at home, matchups might be a little something???

don't really know cause we're normally very good on the road.

No matter what, I will always despise Franzen and Hudler and will never get over the fact that they kept Franzen over Hossa.

I couldn't agree more. I despised the decision in 2009 and nights like this one only further that belief. Hossa was everywhere tonight and a force at both ends. Easily the most noticeable player on either team. It would be really nice if Franzen could show half that effort in a game sometime in the next couple months. You can't even deny it isn't an effort thing with Franzen because he's one of the best goal scorers in the league when he shows up. Problem is those games are few and far between.

Beyond that, the ice was horrible and the refs were even worse. Six penalties to one and the double standard with goaltender interference is infuriating. Once again, the Red Wings intensity and attention to detail was lacking on the road. Zetterberg's line was awful in defensive coverage.

Another tough challenge tomorrow night. At least it's a home game.

I'd be very happy if we could win tomorrow night. 6 points out of 8 against central div. is acceptable

why? They both had 21 points the last 2 playoff's and Hossa is a much bigger threat than Franzen, faster, stronger and quicker shot. The last two and a half season's is just proof who the Wings should have kept.

i love the way hossa plays as well but i can never forget the way he played for us in the playoffs.

if he was even decent in those playoffs we could have waltzed our way to the cup.

not saying that a non existent franzen is any better though.

I would also factor into that games played and team depth. Wings have more scorers than the Hawks. It makes a difference with ice time and whether you shoot or pass. Just sayin'.

While he didn't score to potential, he was a great playmaker. He won a LOT of battles along the boards. I was happy with his playoff performance overall.

I don't disagree, but he was playing hurt too. When healthy, there isn't one thing Franzen is better at than Hossa unless you count being invisible October-April.

i know what you're saying because trust me, i love the way he plays.

but his money isn't earned by winning board battles.

he didn't play well for pitt or us in the playoffs, but played very well for chicago.

oh well, franzen just won't cut it. this team requires a pure goal scorer.

He was #3 in scoring for the Pens, behind Malkin and Crosby, and he had a mediocre playoff season for the Hawks in 2010. Your habit of spouting off without sufficient knowledge is getting old.

See above.

Hate to complain about officiating but Red Wings got hosed by the refs tonight. I don't think any team can win when calls are so poor and one sided as this one was.

Very tough to get going offensively killing penalties all of the time. Both goaltender interference calls were terrible and obviously the "hook" to give Toews the penalty shot was too. I would prefer they call very little and let them play, but if you are going to make questionable calls, do it both ways. This was definitely a game where the refs influenced the outcome.

Hossa was on 3 teams that made it to the Stanley Cup Finals and put up a +11 plus/minus in the playoffs. Franzen is +36 in his career. Franzen averages .44 goals per game in the playoffs, Hossa averages .28. Franzen averages .86 points per game in the playoffs, Hossa averages .76. Franzen also had 5 game winning goals the season the Wings won the cup. Pretty clutch.

While I think Franzen was a bit overpaid, it was still a better deal than the $63 million bill the Blackhawks paid.

Not saying Hossa sucks, or Mule is better, but I think signing Hossa to that long of a contract coming off a couple of injury seasons wasn't a bad move when Franzen is pretty good in the playoffs.

Not as much when you consider the term. Franzen for 11 years is looking like a very poor decision.

I would take my chances with Hossa again despite the pretty clear advantage you mentioned Franzen holds in the playoffs. Hossa's impact during the regular season compared to Franzen's is a huge difference in Hossa's favor. Better goal scorer, point producer and defensively it's a runaway. Not to mention, effort has never been a question surrounding Hossa. Maybe Hossa gets you a couple more wins during the regular season and home ice in some playoff rounds, which is huge.

I guess I would take six months of Hossa over Franzen with the trade-off being possibly a slightly lesser impact come playoff time. Franzen clearly has the ability to at least match Hossa offensively, but puts in little desire to do so.

We weren't good enough to be honest and even in that shape we were close to at least a point.

As for Hossa over Franzen debate...

1.In 2009 it was reasonable to offer a guy called the mule a long term contract

2.Hossa was as good as Crosby and Malkin against us in the Finals

3.The Wings wanted to keep him,he did want to stay, but couldn't offer him a long term deal he got in Chicago

Just the last part. Franzen had some awesome moments that are locked in history with this club, however when you put Franzen and Hossa side by side and ask who do you pick?? ... No s*** you would.

Hossa is great during the regular season but I'll take Franzen in the playoffs any day of the week.

If Holland doesn't waste his time with Hudler and Samuelsson in 2009 then we get both.

So yeah.

Samuelsson was gone before July 1st. He had already put up his home for sale.

We've already lost as much games in regulation on the road as all of last season.

Is that you, Mindfly?

Just once this season, can we lose 3-2 in overtime instead of regulation, y'know, just like the rest of the league does on a nightly basis? Only 1 loserpoint all season is the difference in the standings right now.
