Scoring...we have certain players that only score when the pressure is off, and when they do, they score in bunches to pad their stats, but fail to show up when really needed. The Wings are near the top of the league in goals for, but how many of those came in that stretch when they score 7 goals every game at home? Our sniper scores half his goals in November and them doesn't score a meaningful goal for three months. Change is needed and I hope change is coming. We need a scorer that can be relied upon to score when the chips are down...

This needs to be looked at again.

I'm thinking you're only saying this because you were the creator of this ridiculous thread. The Wings play the Islanders once a year. And for the second year in a row, the Wings played the Islanders when the former were playing their third game in four nights, and, in this case, their third AWAY game in four nights.

Come off of it.

I think this team is a second round exit for sure as they keep choking on the road and they play defense worse than the Detroit Lions secondary e.g. teams with speed all look like the New Orleans Saints WR's!

Wait... YOU being pessimistic? What a shock (sarc). You already openly wrote off this squad despite the fact that they're currently tied for 2nd in the conference. Well, champ, why not use your amazing powers of prescience to tell us who WILL win the Cup this season?

You're absolutely right. +1

Look I think there's plenty of room for this team to improve, but on nights like tonight when the team has no jump, it is not some sort of omen. The guys just played like s***, for whatever variety of reasons, certainly it's no indication of how they'll do in the playoffs, and no indication of how good we are. If you want to go through and nit pick the worst games we've played all season and hold those under a microscope fine, but I could do the same with the first Vancouver game, the Boston, Pittsburgh, and most recent Chicago games and say that we're world beaters who can't lose to even the best teams. Let's hold off on the reactionary talk and call this game what it was...a really bad GAME.

I have to agree. Every team has bad games. Lets not overreact to a single loss.

Games like tonight is where the wings could use someone to spark the team with a big hit or fight. Team was completely flat and the skill wasnt working, so what do the wings do? Absolutely nothing.

A game like this in 2008 would have been livened up and energized by Downey with a fight or Drake with a big hit (or possibly a fight every now and then)

Its great when the skill is working but the lack of a balanced team is clear in games like tonight

Just in 2008, they had some ugly games and losses where nothing energized them. I remember a game against Atlanta when we lost 5-1 and everyone was flat that game. The Wings are on pace for another 100 point season and defensively, they are better than last season.

They are going in the right direction, but you don't feel like something is missing? I think scoring has still been their achilles heel, as well as stupid defensive lapses. They've improved, but when push comes to shove, we haven't improved faster than other teams.

Too many aged players (not Lidstrom) who decide not to take it on themselves to make a difference. Can't fault the young guys or Flip tonight. This is all on the crap that Bert, Z and Mule display as often as not. It's a pretty complacent group in the room without Dats.

Detroit is letting St. Louis and Chicago take a spot in the Central, when this team has all the talent to run away with it.

Babcock needs to adapt his game plan and Holland needs to add talent that is willing to work hard enough to score goals even when it isn't easy.

We need to make a move to get us on par with San Jose. Albeit we were extremely close to making history last playoffs in coming back from a 0-3 deficit I think then and now that our main problem is team defense plain and simple. Our team d was fantastic in 08 when we won the Cup. How to fix that? I'm not really sure. Another one of our struggles is timely scoring as LeftWinger and others point out, Franzen and others need to step up Ans score the big goal. But if this team continues to do this we need to make a trade. I'd listen to offers for Franzen but I highly doubt anyone will want that contract.

Last season, they scored more but had more defensive lapses. This season, with improved defense, they aren't scoring as much. I think everyone wants to see better defense when the playoffs come around.

I think this team is going to be just like any other top tier team in the NHL. They are going to have their share of good and bad games, but the top tier teams are going to have 100+ point seasons and do some damage come playoff time. Then, anything can happen.

You are right, defense is key, but in previous years the lack of offense is what killed Detroit in the playoffs.

The Wings are in the top tier but they just don't seem that threatening, even when they are winning. You never hear teams or commentators talk about how dangerous the Wings are anymore, or how amazing their game is. We've slipped into the upper end of average it seems like, even though we'll have another 100+ point season. Good enough for the regular season but we need some sort of killer instinct to go far in the playoffs.

Basically, we need to prepare to face San Jose and Boston in the playoffs. I feel like we can handle any other team but facing San Jose is basically a certainty if we can get out of the first round.

Guest Hatethedrake!

If we make the playoffs (which we should) we need to worry about our 1st round opponent. Win that and then worry about the next opponent. And so forth. The playoffs are unpredictable. San Jose and Boston could be knocked off in the first round. Boston had to win 3 Game 7's last year in their Cup run. San Jose was down 2-1 to LA in the first round. The playoffs are a long way away. There is still half a season to play yet. This Wings team will look different after the trade deadline. 1 or 2 new players will likely be added plus we have guys like Eaves and Mursak returning.

I think it is a lack of compete in some of our guys. A number of them are nearing the end of their career, an NHL season is long with a lot of travel. Not much different than you and me mailing it in some days at work. Not an excuse but just an observation and a dose of reality. The mind and will is such an important part of the game because many teams are very close in terms of skill level and even if the skill level is dramatically different (like Wings and Islanders), if you mail it in there is enough on the other side to put some pucks in the net and get a win. I'm fine with not winning the President's trophy and going into the playoffs in 3rd, 4th, or 5th place but I sure hope they have enough in the tank to turn it on and not get themselves down 3-0 like last year.

A few years ago, the Wings were probably the hardest working team in the NHL and I remember hearing announcers and analysts say as much. They weren't just all skill.

I don't think that's true anymore. This team wins on pure skill and the work ethic just isn't there every game. Maybe they're too jaded and a change of some kind is needed. We've had the same lineup for almost 3 years now. It's getting a little stale at times.

People are quick to forget that certain teams owned us in the 90s and solving those teams led to the cup. Remember Colorado in 1995-1997 when they beat us in the playoffs and the regular season? It took the final regular season game in 1997 and a tough playoff series to eliminate the Avs. No team sits on top forever. The Wings will solve the Sharks, and I dare to say that will happen this year. As for that killer instinct, you won't see much of that during the regular season from any team.
