Our Power play

So what are your feelings on why our power play is so bad? Too many set-up guys and not enough snipers? Relying too much on the deflection in front of the net?

Speaking of the latter what is the deal with our skaters alone going down the middle and passing it off to a wing on the side creating a much worse shooting angle. This happens so much I am beginning to think this is a philosophy of the coaches.

The powerplay basically consists of getting it back to Lidstrom and having him take a slap shot while everywhere waits near the boards for some ridiculously long-distance rebound. Obviously the Wings depend on defense to help get the offense going, but I think it's too obvious that they always fake a shot and pass up to the defense for a wide open shot. Maybe if someone try carrying it into the net and causing some chaos there they could get a garbage goal.

And as for your second comment, that bugs the crap out of me, too. What's the point in taking a weak shot at a sharp angle when the goalie and a defenseman are in your way? You might as well just hold onto it and start cycling. At least if you shoot it head on there's a slim chance it might deflect or squeak through.

You nailed it... everyone is trying to set everyone else up on the powerplay this year... no one wants to shoot! Babs has got to get Pavs to get shooting a LOT more than he is, same with Hank. I have said it before and I will say it again, Babs needs to get Hank to play like he did in 2008 (where he SCORED GOALS)! To do that he needs to put the 2 together on the powerplay at least!

Zetterberg- Datsyuk- Homer

White- Lidstrom

- Hank and Pavs NEED to both shoot the puck a lot more than they do

- Have Nick shoot the puck and all the forwards crash the net (basics)

Franzen- Fil- Bert

Hudler- Kronners

- SHOOT THE PUCK.

Babcock defs needs to fix this powerplay asap.

That 3-high umbrella formation they use so often is crap against the collapsing box defenses. I forget if it's Blashill or Peters that runs the PP, but whoever it is needs to watch some more NHL film from recent years to see what's working.

White, as good as he's been, is just no Rafi when it comes to shooting (and notice that he and Nick never cross up for the one-timers). Homer, as good as he is in front of the net, isn't going to win a lot of 4-on-1 battles.

We need a lot more motion laterally, behind the net, cycling in the corners, toward the net. Get the PK'ers moving around (aside from just collapsing in and expanding out). Once the lanes open up, we need to shoot, and get guys to the net to battle for rebounds.

Yeppers. If Homer cant't tip, we are kinda doomed it seems.

I can't count how many times we have had a 3 on 2 with the slot WIDE OPEN and we pass to the winger for a VERY low % shot. I'm sure we are hoping for a rebound shot but good goalies don't give those up very often.

Sniper is needed.....Shanahan-type

Babs probably wishes that the Wings would secretly execute a power play style like the Bruins. I don't know how good theirs is statistically but they just seem to get pucks through and to the net for second and third chances.

You need puck hound net crashers for that. Last time I checked we don't specialize in that.

There needs to be a power play specialist or a true get me the puck so I can shoot it type guy on our team. We need a top six forward through trade. I have to say the coaching staff doesn't really do a great job either getting the most out of the guys we do have right now.

It was working pretty well a while back, and the big difference that strikes me now compared to then is that Franzen is just not getting open and taking shots like he was.

Player movement needs to get better too, it's too static and predictable most of the time.

Also, can we stop pretending that "a sniper" would solve every last issue with the team? Nasvhille has the 2nd best PP% in the league and their leading goalscorer has 15 goals. It's very possible to have a great PP without having a Stamkos or Ovechkin on the team.

Nashville has Weber. Other teams fear his shot which opens up lots of other otpions. So unless we can trade for this type of player to run the point (Lidstrom is amazing, but his shot is not feared), a pure sniper is a reasonable wish.

One of the reasons is that they just don't shoot the puck on the net. Though it seems so stupidly obvious, the Wings like to just pass back and forth on the PP, rarely (or not nearly as often as they should) shooting the puck on net.

Start shooting more pucks at the net on the PP, and some of them will go in. Its quite simple.

I think it's mostly this. After watching NJ score on their power play 3 times agains the Flyers, it's very obvious that you can't score goals with passing around the perimeter. Move the puck, move yourself. Give the defending team a chance to be confused.
