22 is the actual record

So, i'm sitting here, watching my daily dose of news and the sports updates when I overhear on NBC Sports Network that Boston actually has the record of 22 consecutive wins. Apparently they were forced to play a home game on the road due to some stuff, which results in the record being "22" now. Boston sources are magically getting all types of butthurt now and can't just pat the Wings on the back for their outstanding feat.

Yeah, i'm not sure why they were all types of up in arms about it. It's that and the fact that 4 of them have been OT/SO winners. The Wings can never just get a pat on the back, haters gonna hate. I was hoping someone had alittle more of a background story about it though.

I havnt heard this yet but I did read that the Bruins technically had 22 wins in a row because the streak continued into the next season, but unfortunately for them the NHL doesnt "carry over" from one season to the next. Either way the Wings are in the record books. Sorry Boston.

The League has had a policy that the way the game is scheduled is the way it is counts in the official records. It has happened to Detroit in 1938-39: a game was scheduled to be played in Chicago but had to be moved to Detroit, due to a six-day bike race. A home game prior to that game was played in Chicago. If a Boston home game was played as an away game, the reverse would also have happened in the same season.

So, the official NHL record book has been wrong since 1929-30? The "Bettman Model", good for facial egg removal:

The OT/SO (especially SO) is a legitimate point though....it's impact is quite huge. That doesn't keep anyone from patting them on the back though...it's jut pointing out a fact.

Babcock said it best.. "Scotty Bowman's 96' team won 62 games and didn't do it, they had a dream team in 2002 and didn't do it." He also said something about their record setting points year and how hard it is to do it period. People really hate seeing records broken.

If OT/SO made it easier to have a long winning streak, why has it been ages since anyone even came close to beating this record?

A win is a win and you get them anyway you can, under the current rules of the league. When Boston got their 20 straight home wins the league was so incredibly different and had teams who were free wins. Same when Philly did it, the league was much less competetive. Boston did it when they had 10 minute OT as well I believe.

Today no game is a free win, the parity has made long winning streaks very rare.

But I hope Detroit can keep the streak going a little while longer just to silence the whiners and put it beyond any doubt that this is the best Home-streak in League history.

I don't know about that, I think people generally love to see records broken....maybe just not the people that formally held that record, or maybe everyone loves the player that held a record and they don't like the player that comes along a breaks it. Generally though, I think people like seeing records get broken.

It's still irrelevant. If it's so easy to do with OT/SO, why have the 29 other teams not done it? It's not like we are the only team allowed to go into OT/SO.

That's not the argument though, I'm not aware of anyone saying it is easy, of course it isn't, it's a signficant accomplishment. What some are saying is that is is difficult to compare against a record that was set in the late 70s went there was no shootouts. The argument isn't that it is easy, the argument is what is more impressive, 21 straight wins today or 20 straight wins in 1976? They will point out that without the shootout, the Wings streak would have stopped at 12 games.

Personally, I think it is a valid point, but at the same time, I don't get too caught up in it. I'm not sure why, but this type of streak doesn't grab my interest that much....I think it's cool and all, I just don't get too worked up about it.

That's not even logical. The record was 20. So if Boston was forced to play a home game on the road, that would mean the record is 21, not 22.

Yeah, that's weird. Or, maybe they are saying you need to win 22 to have the reord, not 21 since Boston has the record at 21?

Unless they won the home game following the 'road' game. Which was not specified either way.

That wouldn't matter, they must have lost their next home game, otherwise the record would not be at 20 games.

I believe the story for it being 22 isn't because of some rogue road/home game thing. The bruins I believe won their last 20 home games in that season, then won the next 2 home games the following season. NHL does not count records through seasons, they end with the season. The flyers lost their home opener after their 20 game streak. So if it continued to the following season the record would be 22, but since the NHL doesn't recognize it that way the wings have the record at 21 right now.

True dat. Something is fishy anyways, why does this come out after the fact to begin with?

Maybe it was previously disputed, who knows. Either way though, no real reason to bring it up again until now. If the Wings win their next game at home it really won't matter anyway.

guess what, should we win next at home, someone will start measuring a distance from home arena to road arena. and that someone will claim, that Boston or Philly won 23 just because their 23rd win was 'near or not that far' from home.

Because the shootout hasn't been around that long.

It's interesting, the Wings set the record for most consecutive wins on the road a few years ago (12). Am I that forgetful? I don't remember a big deal being made about it.

I had not remembered it either, until it was mentioned after they'd gotten this latest record. Six years is a pretty long time; perhaps in 2018 we will have forgotten this streak too.
