Columbus GM Reveals Nash Demanded Trade

I feel bad for Nash. What a terrible situation. Can you imagine having to keep playing the rest of the season knowing it's for nothing? (Other than money of course). Especially thinking you were going to get traded, having this come out, and having to face your fans and teammates. Could be awkward. At least he didn't say the team sucked or criticize anyone, haha.

I'm also not sure why everyone is down on Nash for providing a short list of teams. If the whole point is to get out of a losing environment, wouldn't you want to go to a half-way decent team? How was he to know Howson wouldn't take any offers? The Rangers apparently offered a last-minute doosy.

Some fresh news about Barry Sanders and how he filed for divorce. To me he's the first example that comes to my mind when it comes to somebody in that kind of losing situation. Like oh no they're going on a path like #20.

With a lot of people on here saying Nash is deserving of not getting traded, I pose this question......What does this whole situation do to his value this off season? Does it lower it because it puts a dent on his character and teams avoid him because he could be a disturbance in the locker room? Or does it have no value and he is still a top UFA this offseason?

Sucks for Nash even if the guy isn't my favorite hockey player. As a person, he's got to be really upset and feel like the world is crushing him.

Sounds like the State of Ohio is somewhere you don't want to go to if you're an athlete. Joakim Noah made fun of the city of Cleveland, Lebron James left them for money and was ostracized. Now Nash was left out to hang by his organization. You'll know whether or not he'll stay if the people start booing him at the games. If they do, I say other teams fans should cheer for him! Lol... that'd make him feel good I bet.

Thank god we live in a city that loves it's athletes!

Gee, I wonder how Wisniewski feels now about signing in Columbus...drama, drama, drama

Probably about the same way he feels about Avery.

I think Nash has devoted himself enough to the Columbus organization to be in a position to want out. It's a lot like Kovalchuk, put a ton of time into the Thrashers who tried to improve when they added Holik and Hossa, made the playoffs and got swept out in the first round by the Rangers. He stuck with it, made the push with the team, and it inevitably collapsed. There was no shame in Kovy moving on and I feel the same way about Nash. This was their year to improve drastically and make that playoff push, the effort failed and I think he doesn't want to be in another rebuilding situation as he's paid his dues as a leader of the team.

let's be clear. nash is no danny heatly.

i freaking hate danny heatly. not only does he kill somebody by acting a fool, the way he treated ottawa and edmonton was just ridiculous.

Coming off his lowest points total since his rookie season (excluding his shortened 31-game season in 2003–04), TSN reported that Heatley had filed a request for a trade on June 9, 2009, despite being only one year into his 6-year contract extension, signed in 2007.[20] Heatley's reason behind the request was that he had become unhappy with his role in Ottawa after the season, especially after the Senators made a coaching change and brought in Cory Clouston. Heatley was also unhappy in his perceived limiting of ice time by Clouston, and his move from the first power-play line to the second power-play line, all of which had been discussed in the Senators' year-end meetings.[20]In an interview with reporters, Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray stated that he was "shocked and disappointed" at the request. In addition, Murray stated that Clouston was hurt by Heatley's remarks. "The frustrating part for us is we have gone through several coaches here that we couldn't win enough games with," Murray stated. "We brought in a guy the results we were very happy with. The team started to look like a real team again. And then to be kind of blind sided in his way of thinking anyway by one of your players - not wanting to fit in. That's hard for a coach to accept."[21]

Trading Heatley was made more difficult since his contract demands approximately $7.6 million for the 2009–10 season, with few other teams having salary cap room. A deal was in place to send Heatley to the Edmonton Oilers for Andrew Cogliano, Dustin Penner, and Ladislav Smid, on June 30, but Heatley refused to waive his no trade clause which made him extremely despised in Ottawa and in Edmonton.[3] NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly suggested to the club that they may have grounds to file a grievance, as the trade demand may compromise the contract that stipulated they pay upfront (due July 1, 2009) Heatley $4 million USD of the upcoming season's salary.

That's a good question.

I had thought the same thing about Marek Zidlicky this year. He made it quite known that he did not want to be in Minnesota and wanted to be traded.

They got 3 bodies and 2 picks for him before the deadline day.

I was amazed that it didn't lower his worth, but I guess that if you have multiple offers, those offering will fight amongst each other with higher offers no matter what the side show.

Given that Nash has done nothing publicly, and that it was the GM who blabbed, I'd say that it won't be held against Nash.

Personally I think it was a dick move by a guy that is the supposed leader and face of the franchise, to request a trade and then give only a very short list of teams that he accepts a trade to. With the parity in the league there are a lot of teams with a chance to win. Even Columbus made the playoffs and were looking good just a few seasons ago.

Personally I wouldn't really want his huge contract here as the chance he'll live up to that money is small.

What was offered/What Howson wanted/What he got:

Larry Brooks of the New York Post tells us how high, as New York Rangers GM Glen Sather offered a significant package that didn't come close to this asking price:

He is believed to have offered the Blue Jackets a five-asset package including Brandon Dubinsky, 21-year-old top defense prospect Tim Erixon, highly regarded 2011 first-round draft choice J.T. Miller and 2010 second-round pick Christian Thomas, along with a 2012 first-round selection in order to make it happen as yesterday's 3 p.m. trade deadline approached.

There is a difference though between lusting and sinning, the latter the impulse Sather ultimately resisted by rejecting Howson's laughable demand the package include Dubinsky — plus either Ryan McDonagh or Michael Del Zotto — plus either Derek Stepan or Carl Hagelin — plus 2009 first-rounder Chris Kreider, the Boston College winger who conceivably could join the Rangers when his college season ends — plus a 2012 first-round selection.

Oh right, he got nothing.

He deserves it, that arrogant prick. Hope he has fun with his "market value" money losing in Columbus for the next 5 years

We're going to ride that "fair market value" quote till the end of his career aren't we? lol Good stuff.

Does anyone else think it was foolish for Howson to say Nash demanded to be traded? The fans might boo him now, which will lead to a messy ending for everyone. Plus, knowing that Nash wants to be out of Columbus, that kind of hurts Howson's ability to trade him. Its going from "We're open trading him" to "We HAVE to trade him". I feel like revealing this cost them leverage to trade him now.

Especially thinking you were going to get traded, having this come out, and having to face your fans and teammates.

His teamates obviously already knew. If the fans get all pissed just now, over this one specific announcement, then it just proves that they're idiots who don't really know anything about hockey. As pointed out earlier, he has a NMC, so the fact that he was being shopped with the NMC is exactly the same as him saying "I want out". So it should have already been obvious to everyone that he asked to be traded.

So what would be a similar package from the Wings to that?

Filppula, Nyquist, Callahan, Smith, 1st rounder in 2013. Is that worth giving up when you can just sign Parise on July 1st? I don't think it is.

Aren't the Columbus fans already unhappy with management?

This sure shouldn't help matters. I can't blame Nash for asking to be traded. They've been in the league 11 seasons and made the playoffs exactly once. That's the only season they finished above .500. And they've gotten a top 10 pick in the draft every season but one.

Howson should not have told everyone that it was Nash who demanded a trade. What's the point? Howson has proven to be a very inept GM. Did ownership force him to sign Wisniewski and Carter? I don't know. It may be a similar situation in Columbus as it seems to be in Chicago. I get the sense that Stan Bowman is also a puppet. Anyway, Howson knows that his job is on the line with this Nash trade. If the rumoured players from the Kings, Leafs, Rangers, Sharks, etc are true, then why should Howson make a trade? If I'm Howson, I at least need a teams best prospect to sell my fanbase on this trade. You have Sather saying he will not give up Kreider or McDeonaugh. Wilson says he will not give up Couture. Heck even Burke says he will not give up Gardiner. Well then no wonder they didn't get Nash! Howson doesn't have to make a trade just for the sense of making a trade here. Nash has 6 years left on his contract and is only 27 years old. He is one of the best scoring wingers in the game and Howson is suppose to take a bunch of B level prospects for him? Give me a break! If no team offers fair value for Nash then keep him. Plus making it even harder for Howson, he has to adhere to Nash's wish list of 5 or so teams. Talk about limiting yourself. The said teams on his LIST all know this and it's essentially why there have been so many lowball offers. Keep Nash until a GM is willing to be realistic. If not then keep him. That's what I'd do.

if you listen to the interview Nash sends pretty obvious message: this management is s***ty, the team, city, fans and he himself deserves better. he's making it a bit to "bright" and trying not good enough to hide his own desire to get out of the mess, but he clearly repeats that the ask for trade was for the good of "team, city, fans and myself" blatantly and continuously omitting any mention of management. and he's not trying to be overly political and nice so you get pretty obvious impression that he's not happy with the situation.

I think it has something to do with him simply wanting to get out and playing some real hockey in playoffs. he probably thought it's gonna happen and now is sore it didn't work out and even got out to the public. can't blame him for this, although he could be a little bit more political about this thing.

Howson going public with "it was him"... is pretty classless here and smells a lot like a guy trying to save his a$$ when his whole resume is 1 playoff appearance in more than 10 seasons. even Maple Leafs achieved more in this time...
