Lidstrom to win Norris trophy?

I don't see it happening, if it does, strictly due to reputation. Not saying that he doesn't deserve it, but there are better options out there currently. The front runner will most likely be Shea Weber.

I just don't see Lidstrom winning this year. There's still time, if he has a spike in offensive production, and if Weber goes down with injury (not wishing that to happen, of course), then he might win. Finalist, probably. Winner, doubtful.

Did a question mark just suddenly appear in the title? Because when I clicked on it to reply there wasn't one.

Ninja Mod wasn't quite so sneaky this time.

Karlsson will win, hes going to put up 80+ points. There should probably be an award for Best Offensive Defensemen and another for Best Defensenen.

No he won't. Points aren't the only dictator of whom will win the Norris. Karlsson has defensive collapses and still is learning how to play great defense. Sure, he can throw up some numbers and is doing so, but that doesn't mean he will be bringing the Norris home. Shea Weber will be the winner most likely.

If he wins it, it would be fine with me. Pure offensive guys in the past (Green) were in the mix, but lost out to other, complete defenders. In this case, Karlsson is like 20 points ahead of the next highest scoring d-man.

I love Nick, but too many other players having great seasons. I think it'll come down to Karlsson, Weber and Chara.

Actually neither Weber or Chara are having super impressive seasons. Imo Weber has been good enough for a couple of years now that he probably deserves a win, but if Chara wins it will be even more of a reputation win than when Lids won it last year.

Karlsson is having a beast of a season though. He doesn't seem to be slowing down either. To me, he's not even close to good enough defensively to win it, but if he keeps putting up these points the voters might not care since guys like Lids, Chara and Weber will be so far behind.

Lids is having a great season though, even though he's not producing offensively like he has in the past. I think the voters will also look at how a guy like Ian White comes in and gets paired with Lidstrom and suddenly has a career year.

I never said I agreed with it, obviously he's not great in his own zone. But when you put up those kind of numbers, it's hard to be denied.

I can't see Lids winning it. Karlsson should be in the running for sure, but unless he ends up top three in points in the league, he shouldn't win. It would take that kind of offensive output to make up for the lack of defense. Before anyone brings him up, Coffey was insanely productive offensively, but was also pretty good at playing defense too.

In general I just hope the Norris remains the best all around defenseman and people actually vote that way. I don't want it to go the way of the Selke, which has become best forward who scores a lot of points and is also good defensively.

I will be blunt, I think he's got a chance at being a finalist due to reputation, but I think he has close to no chance at winning it.

Karlsson is destroying the competition offensively, but I don't think that will be enough either. Webber probably is the favourite.

The Karlsson case is hard though. When Green had those big years, most didn't think he'd win and he didn't, but he was close. If you look back, he only outscored the competition by a handful of points (7 in 2010). Karlsson will likely outscore the competition by close to 30pts (that is absolutely massive....especially with scoring lower these days). Green finished 21st overall in scoring in 2010, Karlsson currently sits in 6th.

Lidstrom hasn't even been the best defenseman on our team, IMO, let alone the entire league. I don't know if he would win the Norris even if he was playing hockey ala lidstrom 2002, though. I feel like there are too many influential people who see Lids as inferior to Orr and have to justify that by not voting for his tying Norris trophy. It doesn't matter either way, though.

Our mediocre powerplay, the dropoff in goals from Zetterberg, Holmstrom being a 4th liner, and the absence of Rafalski have all resulted in worse offensive numbers for Lidstrom.

Defensively, he has a better plus/minus than last year, but I don't know how much to read into that. Obviously, the voters didn't care last year.

I don't know about that. If Lidstrom was playing above and beyond everyone and didn't win, maybe we discuss conspiracy theory then.

That's been my fear; that he might not get the nods because his achievements would rival that of Orr's.

Did anyone actually read the article? I don't see any reason why he can't win. He is tied for the best +/- there is; regardless of how useless that stat is. One of the three tied with a +25 is Ian White. He doesn't have 50 pts, but this isn't the Art Ross. He is still having a solid year and is in the top 10 for goals by defenseman. Not to mention all that stuff that was covered in the article.

I thought it was funny the video clip had the analysts picking Weber and Karlsson, while the article pegs Lids as the winner.

I am sure that Nick will be glad to pass the torch to Karlsson. Karlsson's stats are freekin incredible. If Karlsson doesn't win this year there is something wrong.

Who would you put above him? Not Kronwall. He's been good but had some really awful mistakes and weak games. White is having a great season in part because he's paired with Lidstrom.

While I somewhat agree with this sentiment, I'm not exactly sure who I would put above Lidstrom. I'm not sure he's been great as far as a two-way defenseman goes. However, I can't really say for sure that one of the other guys has been better.

Who's been better from your point of view just out of curiosity? Ericsson? :hehe:
